Our celebration was just ordinary Sunday Roast with the usual, plus baked beans, and desserts the littles like. Lovely. I would be delighted if it was a public holiday again. Why not?

My dad was a busdriver. He never expected to get the same days off as everyone else. Bus drivers like all NHS staff, etc., work rotas. So that's a silly comment, Jalima. Working fewer hours means more employment and job satisfaction for most people. I'm sure you will complain about that, too.

three day weekend every weekend? For everyone? Perhaps not for bus drivers, hospital staff, ambulance drivers, shop workers, garden centres um, er half the population .

No, hadn't heard of it but not a lot of people take much notice of them anyway.

Green Party wants a three day weekend every weekend.
I haven't noticed all the posts complaining about that, just four days bank holidays on Saints days. So much for telling some of us we hate the UK. I notice they are the ones who don't want four more bank holidays.
Who are the miserable ones now?

I celebrated St. George's Day yesterday at Whitton in Middlesex, where they really go to town with a Parade, complete with Dragon, St. George and damsel etc. etc.

My friends took me in their car as I was on crutches after a knee operation. The sun came out there was music live, stalls, they do this every year and I wouldn't miss it for the world. Also the Royal Albert Hall in London have the most patriotic St. George's Day Concert ever, complete with Jerusalem, Land of Hope and Glory etc. and red, blue and white balloons.

Yes there are numerous reports to show that if people work less hours and have time off it boosts productivity. It is recognised by more and more forward looking businesses - particularly young businesses. They aren't stuck in the past.

Meant to add that the well known communist country,good old USofA also has Labor Day

Well its my late dads birthday too(would be 90 today?). So St Georges day is special in two ways to me.....

So if Mr Corbyn does become Prime Minister, and awards us four extra bank holidays for the saints' days (and I can imagine businesses will LOVE that idea!), what happens if Scotland gains independence? Do we continue celebrating their saints day with them, or will we have to give it back, cos they're not "one of us" any more?

When I started school in the early fifties we had all sorts of holidays, religious and secular, as it was a village CofE school. On Holy days such as Ascension Day, All Saints Day etc we would join an early service in the church next door, or the vicar would conduct prayers in the classroom, then we'd have the rest of the day off. On Empire Day, May Day or on ancient notable dates such as Quarter Days (it was a farming community) we'd have a half-day holiday, and on battle anniversaries such as Trafalgar Day, Relief of Mafeking or Ladysmith, VE day etc and patron saints days we would have special lessons about the event. I'm afraid I've forgotten most of them but we seemed to have a lot! Childcare was never a problem with these odd holidays as very few mums worked and children of those who did were looked after by other mums.

I think it was the Conservative government in the early seventies who did away with the variable date of Whitsun and gave us the Late May Bank Holiday instead, closely followed by the Labour Government who gave us the fixed May Day, also known as Labour Day on 1st May in communist countries.

I live in Spain, in Catalonia (North East) and it is the patron Saint here too. In fact St George boasts quite a few countries and regions. Here it is much celebrated, but not a holiday (It is this year, due to falling on Sunday) It is a very sweet festivity, as it is also Cervantes day (It would appear that Cervantes and Shakespeare both died on April 23rd 1616)
As a result, they have little stalls selling red roses, for St George and book stalls too, with reduced prices. It is traditional for couples to give each other books and roses on this day.

For Catalonia, it is more representative than Valentine's day is for Britain.

We went to Lytham yesterday all the shops where dressed up with the flags. There was also a St. George's day concert in the evening. We need to shout about it more every other country in the UK does. Happy St. George's day everyone.

On some literature it is red, on others white.
Also Lancashire red's rose is a flatter Tudor rose rather than the fuller English rose.

We have the flags out too, for the Queen's birthday and St. George. But could Labour please give us back our Lancashire red rose, which they highjacked.

Might be sexualisation of children though! Fertility dancing at Primary School!

sheilasue why is it PC not to celebrate May Day?

As we don't have an empire and we did rather strip assets from countries that were colonised and leave complications, with some awful consequences behind, I can see why empire day is swept under the carpet. Not politically correct more strategically political.
But cannot see a problem with May Day. Kids at school where I am a governor do Maypole dancing!

We are celebrating St George's Day with a flags in our living room window and the kitchen window - we do this every year!
