I take my dad shopping a couple of times a week. He tends to buy the exact same things on a weekly basis. For example;

A small chicken, loaf of his favourite seedy bread, a small tub of Lurpak, a small pack of mince, bananas etc.

We have noticed that the prices for these fairly basic items is rising at an alarming rate and added to recent council tax rises and (his)local authority rents etc. things are becoming very difficult for a lot of people.

I am not retired (probably never will due to changes in rules) but I haven't had a wage rise in over 5 years. My council tax has risen dramatically and I wonder how ordinary people are supposed to make ends meet?

I know they blame Brexit for rising supermarket prices and the increased cost of elderly social care for council tax rises, but I wonder are we all just being conned big style?

Good for you harri you have to get your priorities right grin

I often see the Lurpak trucks rolling off the ferry and imagine all those lovely blocks of butter stacked inside. I might hold one up one day. grin

My dad won't have anything but his beloved Lurpak (why not, he does nothing else). My mum was terrible for butter and went through huge amounts. Mind you towards the end all she would eat was thin white bread, spread with a thick layer of butter.

I am now fancying some seedy bread, spread with butter and bramble jelly jam but sadly have to leave for work now.

I never eat butter but DH does and uses it straight out of the fridge cutting off slices and placing it on his toast.
You can make butter anywhere why do we have to import it from Denmark ?
I have noticed price rises mostly in Morrisons, especially since our local store was refurbished. I have to buy more of my groceries from Aldi otherwise I am not going to be able to afford my favourite Champagne grin

Chewy I make both bramble jelly (hubby hates the seeds) and jam every autumn. I'll send you a jar. We have loads of bramble bushes behind our house, so it's pretty cheap to make.

gillybob Wed 22-Mar-17 23:10:22

Morrisons is the only place I can get it Chewy . Another one of life's little luxuries.

Chewbacca Wed 22-Mar-17 23:05:57

Oh stop ! Please! Not had bramble jelly for years. My granny used to make it and I'd love to taste that again.

gillybob Wed 22-Mar-17 23:03:21

It can you know wookie (oops sorry I mean chewbacca) you could put a layer of bramble jelly jam on top and then I would be in absolute bready heaven.

gillybob Wed 22-Mar-17 23:01:01

Seedy bread is VERY different to seady bread still alive grin

I love all things seedy.

stillaliveandkicking Wed 22-Mar-17 22:57:44

I dont do seedy bread, yuck, why should bread be seady? very strange. Crackers can be seady. Bread isn't meant to have things in it.

Chewbacca Wed 22-Mar-17 22:53:38

Mmmmm Lurpak and seedy bread! Can't be beaten.

gillybob Wed 22-Mar-17 22:41:10

My dad (being the extravagant man that he is) keeps his spreadable Lurpak in the fridge. He says it's worth paying over the odds in order to take it out and spread it in his (favourite) luxury seedy batch loaf.

To be fair he has always paid his properly accomplished taxes so I feel that he deserves his little treat.

Jalima Wed 22-Mar-17 22:33:25

Whoever would eat the crust in our house used to have extra butter (when it came off rationing).

stillaliveandkicking Wed 22-Mar-17 22:32:50

Goodness gracious, what on earth do properly accomplished taxes mean grin that's pretty funny. Norah, what are they? Never heard of that. Do you mean you pay tax? I think I accomplish that too. Not sure I like what I get taxed on much though.

Jalima Wed 22-Mar-17 22:32:16

Our butter isn't gloopy - your house must be very hot!
We buy the packet butter, not the spreadable and it stays firm except when the temperature goes right up in the summer (one or two days a year). It's just right to spread.

How do you spread it on bread straight from the fridge? Unless it is the type mixed with oil which isn't pure butter.

gillybob Wed 22-Mar-17 22:29:39

My late mums idea of butter was that if you couldn't see your teeth marks in it, then you didn't have enough on!

gillybob Wed 22-Mar-17 22:28:05

Typical of Gransnet to turn a post about the cost of living into gloopy butter I love it . grin I must tell my dad that he has to cut back on his luxury butter intake.

Don't know what bubble you live in Norah but let's hope it doesn't burst anytime soon and I hope your properly accomplished taxes are all going to keep you in the manner to which you are accustomed. confused

Warm and gloopy in a butter dish no matter what the climate. I don't like butter dishes. Awful texture. But that of course is my preference not yours.

SueDonim Wed 22-Mar-17 21:32:58

It doesn't go to gloop in an insulated butter dish. It's perfect for spreading. I used the same butter dish when I lived in the tropics and it didn't go to gloop then, either, despite the climate.

stillaliveandkicking Wed 22-Mar-17 21:26:56

or

stillaliveandkicking Wed 22-Mar-17 21:26:48

I like butter cold personally. There's a certain texture that to me isn't good when it's kept out of the fridge, it tends to be, like I said, gloopy and far too unwanted-ly spreadable. I like to see it "almost melt" on toast for stay cold in a sandwich.

Ana Wed 22-Mar-17 21:24:24

You must have a very hot kitchen if butter turns to gloop if you keep it out of the fridge (especially at this time of year).

stillaliveandkicking Wed 22-Mar-17 21:20:58

I keep my butter in the fridge I don't like gloop.

SueDonim Wed 22-Mar-17 21:08:41

I keep my butter out of the fridge in an insulated butter dish. It's always perfectly spreadable, that way!

I like to support local farmers so I buy Scottish butter.

stillaliveandkicking Wed 22-Mar-17 21:05:52

I voted leave too by the way. Ah but maybe you know that already. Why pity the young? I voted leave for them. They don't know it yet but things are going to get a whole lot better in England soon.

GillT57 Wed 22-Mar-17 21:02:12

Norah ??? confused

Norah Wed 22-Mar-17 20:53:34

GillT57 I like my bubble as well. No complaining. Prices not going up much that I see.

Additionally, DH business transitioned on to another. It's all good. Thanks, also, for noting properly accomplished taxes/self employment contract to DH's business.
