New phone scam

mind you there can be some surprises ! one unanswered number was DSs ex lol

I google any unknown numbers that turn up on my Phone , you usually find out that others have been called and the option to report the number appears

That's interesting Anya, I noticed the other morning that I'd had a missed call from the Maldives. No chance of me ringing them back though - I always ignore unknown numbers, on the premise that if someone genuinely wants to speak to me they will leave a voicemail.

I think the first scam has been highlighted on GN before. I'm not sure that a doctored phone call could be a legal 'contract', and I doubt the scammers will get very far in this country at least.

What do they do, send you stuff and demand payment? They haven't got your bank details so I wouldn't worry unduly. You have a legal cooling-off period as well, even if you had ordered goods or services.

I have heard of that scam (I think Which? highlighted it recently)

Another one to beware of; I set my mobile and iPad only to ring from certain numbers during the hours of 11.00pm- 7.00pm. When I woke up yesterday I noticed a missed call - from the Maldives!

I googled it and found it's another way of separating you from your money. Don't call it back. Apparently it rings once only and people are tempted to call it back, at a cost of about £300. They often ring at night when people are asleep and not at their most alert. Lucky I had 'downtime' on.
