Great idea we have NT days where we just take off and either find a walk of an NT property - looking forward to starting these soon.

I'm a nervous driver and DH hates going out, unless it is to do his volunteering. He's a social soul really, just pretends to be an old grump. The result is that I don't really know this country at all... {sad}
People say "Have you been to ???" and I reply "I've been nowhere!"
PS he hates picnics too... can't win

grandMattie should you get a sat nav? Get some help with setting it up for places you would like to visit. They go in 'favourites'. then you set up the home button. After that the sat nav will talk you to where you want to go and when you get more proficient you will be able to find points of interest near by such as car parks, resturants etc. Good luck!!

have your picnic at home grandMattie thats what we used to do when we were under pressure at work and coulld only manage the oddd hour out of the office,carpet picnic ,teenagers were warned not to come home during that time and we had the benefit of no midgies or showers of rain to spoil it ,you can even have a glass of wine if you dont have to drive .He might find he likes picnics then and even venture out for one

I'd love to do this but unless there is a loo nearby I daren't risk it. As a child I used to take myself off into the Downs with a sandwich and a drink on my own and enjoy the peace and tranquillity.

When we have our GC around and the weather isn't good I put a picnic rug in the hall, give them the food and they love it.

If grandmattie is a nervous driver a satnav may not help as i tends to take you pn main roads and motorways which I for oe find intimidating. Find a like minded friend (female!) who doent mind driving and plan days out together. You can pay for tge petrol , but her coffee or give tge odd small gift to thank her for driving. I know lots of women who go to NT places for tge day with female friends!

Thanks polly. But it isn't finding my way, it is the physical act of driving which is my problem
I have been out with one or two female friends, but most are married and retired and seem to be joined to their DH at the hip!
Also, DH doesn't even like eating out in our own garden.

Maybe you could go out for lunch at a cafe or pub with a lovely view then he could eat indoors, or how about volunteering at an RSPB place where you could combine volunteering, meeting people and getting out. Or if you don't want to drive but want to go out on your own can you use public transport or join a walking group, theatre club, WI's sometimes do trips or there is the U3A, look online or join local Facebook pages so you know what is going on near you. If he realises you are going out with or without him maybe he'll wonder what he is missing and will join you. Do you know why he doesn't like going out?

Paddyann has the right idea. A picnic does not have to involve travel.
Some of the best picnics that I have ever had were nighttime bedroom picnics.
Picnic rug spread over the bed, soft music, candlelight, wine and lovely food.
Even better when the weather outside is rubbish. Great Fun.?
