Queen Camilla

Prince Charles is campaigning for Camilla to be Queen Camilla when he becomes King. I would not like her to be Queen. I think they both behaved appallingly in carrying on their affair when they were both married to someone else. They had no concern for the hurt, upset and heartbreak they caused Diana and Andrew PB. They just thought it was perfectly OK to act as they did. It's 80 years since Edward abdicated to marry a divorced woman, and Margaret was not able to marry Peter Townsend, even though she was unlikely to ascend the throne. So what rules have changed? He has what he wanted and married her, but making her Queen is condoning their adultery.
But I think I'm in the minority in my view.

She was very photogenic (much more so than Camilla!) but she never struck me as an absolute beauty; more that there was "something about her.."

Gemmag Sun 26-Feb-17 11:36:10

MissAdventure. Really?.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder so the saying goes.

MissAdventure Sun 26-Feb-17 11:27:12

I never saw Diana as a great beauty.

Gemmag Sun 26-Feb-17 11:17:45

As my DH would say, 'Who Cares'?

Diana was no angle and she knew exactly what she was letting herself in for but she just couldn't handle it. After all she was the most beautiful woman in the world and her husband wanted someone else!.

NfkDumpling Sun 26-Feb-17 06:30:50

I too don't see a problem. The Queen is showing no signs of snuffing it just yet, but when the time does come Camilla has proved herself an able consort to Charles and they obviously work well as a team. And after all she's nearly 70, well past providing an heir and upsetting the barrel, she could easily pre-decease the Queen.

(Is talking about the death of the monarch still treason?)

absent Sun 26-Feb-17 04:28:35

Defender of the Faith – a title that the monarch assumes and that has been officially recognised since 1544. Is it a problem if the monarch is divorced and/or his consort is divorced? Is it a problem if the monarch and/or his consort has committed adultery? Let me see – who was the monarch in 1544? Oh, it was Henry VIII, he of the six wives, two of whom he divorced (shock! horror!) and two of whom he beheaded (really very much nastier!) I think the only issue is if the consort has committed or is committing adultery with someone who is not the monarch – but there has never been the slightest suggestion that the Duchess of Cornwall is even slightly tempted.

Stop being so bloody prissy and get over it. If we are going to play at kings and queens, we might as well do it whole heartedly.

Rosepug Sun 26-Feb-17 02:17:11

Rewarding adultery, when has the monarch been pure?

phoenix Sun 26-Feb-17 02:13:51

My gut feeling is that Charles will never be king, our next monarch will be William.

mrsmopp Sun 26-Feb-17 01:36:11

Ah, but:
Charles’s website, for example, publicly states that Camilla will be known as HRH The Princess Consort when Charles accedes, and these assurances have served, over the years, to dampen the anger of traditionalists at court, who still perceive that making Camilla queen would be rewarding adultery.

Rigby46 Sun 26-Feb-17 01:05:12

I meant that that was not why he was elected

Rosepug Sun 26-Feb-17 00:59:05

Queen Camilla is much loved in some circles. Saint Di is much hated in some circles.

C&C are married. King & Queen to be.

Rosepug Sun 26-Feb-17 00:56:41

The American debt skyrocketed under obama and must be retired.

Rigby46 Sun 26-Feb-17 00:54:31

Rosepug well if you believe that, you'll clearly believe anything

Rosepug Sun 26-Feb-17 00:51:11

Trump is not a problem for Americans. He was elected legally to take care of the huge debt left by Obama.

paddyann Sun 26-Feb-17 00:10:56

joannewton46 there are countless countries that have a president that is nothing Like Trump, successful countries that have elections for president and they come and go without problems or controversy ,how about the Republic of Ireland for instance.I have never heard any slurs about their presidents,in fact Mary Robertson(Robinson ?) was widely respected ,theres no massive amounts of money spent by them or on them and believe it or not TOURISTS STILL VISIT.Exactly the same as they do in France where there hasn't been monarchy for centuries.

A sort of Royal It's a Knockout?
Reminds me of a TV programme from the 1980s!

trisher Sat 25-Feb-17 22:42:15

I've posted before that they should be a tourist attraction and do shows/reenactments whilst opening the Royal palaces. It just occurred to me that we could have a "Win the Crown" competition as well. All Royals would be eligible, there would be a number of challenges and the person who won would hold the crown for 1 year. Separate competitions for Monarch and consort. Much more exciting than just having a succession.

Leticia Sat 25-Feb-17 22:18:02

It is all rather an unfortunate mess. I would prefer it to go straight to William, who seems to be more of a modern monarchy. However succession doesn't work like that.
Camilla seems a sensible sort- I am sure that she would just be a support, whatever she is called.

MargaretX Sat 25-Feb-17 22:13:09

I think she should be called queen if that is what she wants. I never liked Diana and think that her sons have turned out Ok with Charles as father. Of course it was tragic to loose their mother but all the fuss and that funeral just made it worse - They have not been helped by being royal.

When I was young I had a boyfriend who worked on a daily newspapr and he said that everyday the had news about Phillip's affairs but in those days they were noz allowed to publish.
The aristocracy have always had affairs and their rule was that all babies were brought up by the husband of the mother even if he was not the father. In that way every child had a father and the aristocracy survived and had a good time.
In some stately houses when they had house parties, there was a bell rung at dawn,so that straying husbands and wives could get back into their proper bedrooms before morning tea was brought in.
The English Aristocracy was never famous for its morals.

DaisyDog Sat 25-Feb-17 21:27:58

Ironic. Saint Diana and her boy toy the most ironic of all.

Deedaa Sat 25-Feb-17 21:19:37

I'm always slightly bemused by the way people harp on about how wonderful William is because he's the tragic son of Saint Diana, yet they are quite happy to dump the whole monarchy thing on him. He's seen how long the Queen has had to trail round the world shaking hands, I should imagine he'd be quite happy to put it off for as long as possible. People have been suggesting that the Queen should abdicate and pass the crown to him since he was at university!

Princess Margaret's love affair with Peter Townsend is always described as a tragedy she never recovered from and how different her life would have been if she had married him. But the fact that Charles finally married the woman he had loved for decades is considered sordid rather than romantic.

It was quite interesting to see that George VI and the Duke of Windsor were the first princes not to be expected to marry any available European princess. I can remember various minor royals being suggested as suitable for Charles.

Azie09 Sat 25-Feb-17 15:11:48

I hadn't been back to the thread so hadn't seen a couple of posts responding to my earlier one. I have a friend who lives in the next village along from Bucklebury where Kate grew up and where her parents still live so I've heard a few interesting stories.

The Middletons are the kind of family who the older Royals would never have associated with in the past. I think William's choice of Kate demonstrates the break with the old school and their ways. I think Charles and Camilla are still part of this set and thus out of step with modern Britain . Not only should she not become Queen but it would be better if the Crown past straight to William.

Re parenting I would point to things like their largely 'hands on' parenting, reducing the input of nannies which I believe has caused trouble in Buckingham palace and their decision to spend Christmas day with her parents at home in an ordinary house. Despite the inevitable Eton experience, Diana went out of her way to spend time with her boys and to take them out and about to meet ordinary people and do ordinary things. A far cry from Charles's life but then he was a different generation and paid the price. Of course Diana was upper class but she had the knack of connecting with others which the old set of Royals have had to learn painfully slowly.

Great thread this. Very enjoyable, how many different opinions the Royals provoke! grin

Esspee Sat 25-Feb-17 15:03:40

I would rather neither Charles nor Camilla become King or Queen. Isn't it time we stopped all this royalty nonsense. It is 2017 after all!

Azie09 Sat 25-Feb-17 14:49:15

* mrsmopp' if there were 'like' buttons, I'd press the one on your post lots of times! The ' firm' look after themselves for sure. Whatever else, Diana taught them a big lesson, well done her!

Nelliemoser Sat 25-Feb-17 12:34:03

Mrs Mopp "The Royal family has a very efficient public relations team to show them in a good light. From Camilla being pelted with bread rolls in a supermarket, because she was hated so much, they have swayed public opinion now to her being accepted."
Every other celebrity etc these days have PR staff at hand.

What exactly has Camilla done to "deserve" that hatred and that sort of treatment? . Other than what hundreds of other people have done, eg having an affair.?

The those members of the public showed utterly appalling behaviour by verbally abusing anyone in a public place because they have been involved in adultery. That is mob behaviour. IMO this is far worse than the adultery. "Let him who is without sin cast the first stone." comes to mind.

As for the death of Diana as a conspiracy theory.
I am sure the secret service could, if they had wanted to, easily have bumped off the pair of them, but never by trying staging a crash in a tunnel. On a fearsome bend above a precipice maybe.

There are far too many variables in that situation to make it viable. You are relying on other peoples reactions and timing and that would be a really weak link in such a plan.
