Puzzled youngster

Talking about tvs, we bought Mum a lovely colour tv when they came out. She turned the colour off because she said it hurt her eyes!

What would they do without 'blue tooth'?

Some great memories flooding back now. Really enjoying reading all these posts.

The first time I ever saw a tv I was about 10 yrs old. The 'posh' neighbour up the street allowed all us youngsters to watch 'Secret Garden' on a 9" screen! It was great because she used to make little iced buns for each of us as well, and this happened every Sunday. I wish I could tell her what a happy memory she gave me.

I asked in a local sell everything store if they sold pumice stones, I was advised to try a garden centre!

I often refer to my 90 year old mum who used to tell her granddaughter's that dinosaurs hadn't been invented when she was at school .She was born in 1907.

Grandmama, today I had to identify a mango for the senior citizen at the 'basket' checkout in Waitrose.

Years ago I asked in Woollies if they sold corkscrews. The young assistant said What's a corkscrew?

More recently I had to tell the check out young man that the round fruit was a grapefruit.

I used to be a telephone operator. If anyone wanted to call the other party on their party line, they had to dial the operator, who would then tell them to replace their receiver for a minute, the operator would then ring the other party, and tell them to hold for the caller. Right old rigmarole it was!

I didn't have a Tv till I was 15 then it was my Nan and grandads up the road mum and dad didn't get one till after I d left home .. I was 30 when I had my first phone
When the kids were all young teens I got a pay telephone put in so they had to put shillings in to make a call it was suppose to save me money but they used to keep borrowing shillings from me so it didn t save me anything

Our first TV after we married was a slot TV, 2 hours for 2 shillings, so we didn`t sit in front of the box for hours on end. And I wish I still had my mangle sometimes.

I volunteer in a Victorian workhouse. We had a laundry day and had the flat irons out. A gran asked her gas how they would get hot as there was no wires, grandsons reply "By Bluetooth?"

If you had a party line you could listen in to the "party's" conversation. That is how the whole road knew a neighbour was having an affair before her husband did. She would be on the phone from about 4pm when she came home from work for at least an hour and the person on the shared line was so fed up with this month after month that she lifted the phone to remonstrate and realized just what she was hearing. She banged the phone down so the woman would know.

Whistling kettles must be making a comeback. One of my friends, who has a very snazzy kitchen has one specially for her induction hob.

My son, last night, was telling us about how you can link your mobile 'phone to your computer and the 'cloud' so that you can pick up and send/store photographs from your camera. God, I am so far behind with this technology and when I see my 3yr old GS playing on a tablet watched closely by his 2yr old brother I feel like a dinasour. I don't know what these youngsters are talking about anymore.

Actually it won't be long before CDs and MP3 players are on the shelf. Tapes and videos/video machines already are. Everything is saved in 'the cloud' nowadays. I don't like it. I prefer an album.

What's an album?

Anyone remember the tv set that accepted coins in a meter?

Or the whistling kettle you put on the stove?

Or the mangle you 'spin dried' your clothes with. Or the dolly tub you had to twist and turn to do the washing?

Or the iron you put on the fire to get hot.

Or lava lamps.

Or the long skipping ropes, you could skip with two more people.

Happy days! We do not know how lucky we are these days.

I remember we used to have shared phone line called a 'party line' with the people next door. Couldn't use the phone until next door hung up.

We also only got a phone when we had been married a while, and then it was a party line. Remember those?

I took my five year old granddaughter to a heritage centre. Lots and lots of items from my youth. Old fashioned shops with proper scales,cash registers etc. While walking in the grounds she came a riyals red telephone box and said, "What's that gran?"
I couldn't believe it! Talk about feeling ancient. I spent most of my teens in a phone box phoning my friends as I didn't have a house phone. She looked at me, only half believing as I started to explain what it was used for.

We`d been married 19 years before we had a phone, and that was only because the house we`d moved into had the connection there already. I was 12 and a half before we had TV.

One of my grannies had a wind-up gramophone on which we played (ad nauseam) a 78rpm record of 'The Teddy Bears' Picnic and on the flip side, 'Hush Hush Hush Here Comes the Bogey Man' sung by Henry Hall. When 33rpm LPs came on the market, my Dad went out and bought a record player and recordings of several D'Oyley Carte G&S Operas. And that was over 60 years ago!

We've got a Fisher Price toy telephone, I found it in TK Maxx three or four years ago.

A few years ago at the doctors,I was telling him about a rash I get on my legs occasionally,I said "it seems to occur when I go on excursion with my club" he said "what's an excursion," I said "When you go on a charabanc to the seaside" and he said "What's a charabanc". I felt ancient.

Gosh, we didn't get a phone till we were married. My parents got one when I was pregnant and they wanted to keep in touch, and the in laws got one when we moved to Cornwall.
