TV programmes that bring memories back

Earlier today, I was chatting with an old friend about a series that had been on tv many years ago and how we'd forgotten about it until we had jogged each others memory. That got us onto other fondly or otherwise programmes from our youth. I'd pretty much forgotten about Doctor Finlay's Casebook, which was watched on a tiny black and white tv on a Sunday evening and, at the time, seemed so realistic that we still remembered characters from the programme. Does anyone else have fond, or not so fond, memories of long tv programmes?

Christinefrance. I can't remember the title of the show. She had a brother who was played by Jimmy Jewell.

Did anyone like the Waltons whispering in anticipation of howls of derision ? I think Noah Beery's brother played Grandpa.

Elizabeth Montgomery was Bewitched! I used time spend soooo much time trying to get my nose to wiggle like Samantha! Never managed it sad

Chewbacca thanks from me too for this thread and all the programmes it's recalled - such as I Dream of Jeannie with a young Larry Hagman and Bewitched with Elizabeth someone (I think).

My favourite at one time was Circus Boy with the young Micky Dolenz (who grew up to be a Monkee) playing Corky and Noah Beery Jnr (don't you just love that name?) playing Uncle Joey.

Here is the theme tune! Maybe not so catchy as I thought.

Chewbacca Wed 15-Feb-17 19:58:56

That's him Marydoll! Efrem Zimbalist. But I can't remember the theme tune at all. blush

Marydoll Wed 15-Feb-17 19:56:37

My husband has just told me Efrem Zimbalist Jr. was the name of the actor who played the older man.

Marydoll Wed 15-Feb-17 19:52:47

Yes! 77 sunset Strip and it had a catchy theme tune, I think there was a guy called Cooky in it. Maybe I have just made that up.confused

Flippin 'eck! You lot have got brilliant memories! I'd forgotten all about Compact and the Thornton Birds but I can see them so vividly now you've reminded me. Does anyone remember an American series called 77 Sunset Strip? I think it had an older man in it; a younger man and a girl called Nancy, but for some reason they called her Nutsy. Or have I got that totally wrong?

Just looked it up. It was Bonanza and the actor who played Hoss died just before they filmed the final series so his character died.

Alima Wed 15-Feb-17 19:26:49

.....and Adam Cartwright. Was the father's name Ben? Loved the theme tune.

Marydoll Wed 15-Feb-17 19:10:19

Chewbacca, thank you for a great thread. It has brought back so many happy memories. I am sitting here smiling away.
The mention of "Thorn Birds" has just reminded my that I have a "Thorn Birds" DVD to watch, the next time hubby goes out.

What was the western about three brothers How's, Little Joe and...?

Ana Wed 15-Feb-17 18:55:40

Yes, roses, apparently the creator of Cap'n Pugwash was very upset by all the false rumours at the time and became depressed.

rosesarered Wed 15-Feb-17 18:51:27

Ana that's interesting ( Captain Pugwash....no suggestive names!)To be honest I only remember Pirate Willy ( which we used to giggle about) and Cut Throat Jake who we thought was scary. grin

Casey Jones! Steaming and a'bowling
Casey Jones! You never have to guess.
When you hear the tooting of the whistle - it's Casey at the throttle of the cannonball express! grin

Greyduster Wed 15-Feb-17 18:28:50

Didn't Roger Moore play Ivanhoe? I watched anything with a bit of awash and buckle. Still do! Richard Greene as Robin Hood!

I used to see the Crossroads cast walking around Birmingham city centre when I went out for lunch. They all seemed ordinary except for Noele Gordon who swanned aroung like she owned the place.

Loved Champion the Wonder Horse. My favourite western was Laramie with the gorgeous Robert Fuller. This afternoon I caught a few minutes of Rawhide on TCM, Clint Eastwood looked about twelve grin

Alima Wed 15-Feb-17 18:00:58

Me too, had forgotten that one. Ward Bond and Robert Fuller who was in Laramie too. Those were the days!

Antonia Wed 15-Feb-17 18:00:56

I remember a 'talking horse' which I think was called Mr Ed, and then there was Skippy the bush kangaroo. My DDs loved The Magic Roundabout and Mr Ben.

callgirl1 Wed 15-Feb-17 17:56:22

Oooh, how could I have forgotten Wagon Train? I watched it religiously every week, just to see the gorgeous Flint McCulloch, played by the equally gorgeous Robert Horton, Mmmmmm!!

Auntieflo Wed 15-Feb-17 17:41:46

Alima, if you loved the old westies, did you also like Wagon Train?
