Do you remember

I was just reading the forum about remembering things from long ago better than recent things.
It was mainly about words, but this thread has brought back so many memories of taste and smell. I just read the post about meggazones, and immediately had the taste in my mouth....and senna tea...and horlicks tablets...and the smell of friars balsam....all so vivid!

My friend and I were discussing egg and lemon shampoo the other day
She had hidden some in a glass under her bed as a teen, as she wanted to wash her hair, and her sister found it and drank it!
How about horse oils? My mum would rub it into my legs when I had "growing pains"

I remember water lily leaf shampoo and being on a picnic with our cousin's somewhere where we found real water lilies and rubbed the leaves on our hair expecting it to lather. (It didn't!). My favourite shampoo was Drene, I wish I could get it now.

We always had Nigroids (very strong licorice) as DF worked in dusty atmospheres and thought they were good for his chest. I still like them, haven't seen them for ages.

(I am ancient), I have a jar of Cremolia on the shelf above my kitchen sink. It lasts for ages and the smell is lovely. Mum used to use it. She also sucked Megazones, so strong, I couldn't get past the sugary bit. I think she rammed them onto the roof of her mouth, and let them gradually dissolve. I seem to remember little blackcurrant pastilles, in a tin, Hanbury's?

We had Lifebuoy soap, Dad washed his hair with it. Was bald quite early in life! I also used to get Ovaltine chocolate bars, they were lovely. A machine on the wall outside a local shop had them. Nowadays it would be vandalised sadly.

I too loved Creamola foam. Raspberry was my favourite. My mother rarely bought it, as we money was very tight.. I have seen it recently in a retro sweet shop in Glasgow.

Chewbacca I remember Cremola Foam, powder in a tin that made a sweet fizzy drink when mixed with water, is that what you meant?

Cremola was a dessert.Cremolia was a hand cream. Corona was fizzy pop.

Yes, you can also buy vitapointe at superdrug, online. It's only a couple of £.

I remember that water lily shampoo Meggieanne, don't know that it was that great tho. We used White Rain shampoo too. Do you remember Radio codliver oil & malt? It was disgusting. What about Cherry Red Linctus for coughs and that bitter chocolate covered in hundreds & thousands to stop you getting worms??? Knights Castile soap and Aladdin Pink paraffin for the oil stove.Being told to go outside and count how many sacks of coal the coalman delivered, in case he didn't give the full order and the chimney sweep telling you to watch the brush come out of the top of the chimney. Navy blue knickers with a pocket for your handkerchief (so you didn't have to tuck it up your knicker leg!)

Cremola was an amazing product BBevan! Hand cream; soft drink and a custard pudding, all in one! Off to Google it - one of us is bound to have a better recollection!

I thought Cremola was a sort of custard,semolina pudding. It had a moon on the packet. My children loved it. Though perhaps I am mixing the name up with something else?

Anyone remember Green Goddess shampoo? It was advertised as being thicker than other shampoo and I remember the TV advert showed them dropping an "emerald " into it to demonstrate how thick it was.

Jalima I remember Cremola as being crystals that you put into water to make a kind of fizzy drink! Maybe we were using it for the wrong thing!

Bay rum, my mother used to masage it into her scalp and she did have lovely hair kept it's colour a lot longer than mine.
Mother and grandmother also had bottles of Sal Volatile in their handbags in case of feeling faint.
I think she used to take bile beans too, I dread to think what was in them.

This thread brings back so many memories. Does anyone remember Sloan's linament, my mum used it for back ache, it smelt awful. You had to apply it sparingly or it burnt the skin! Also a toothpaste called Gibb' s dentifrice which came in a little tin, it looked a bit like pink shoe polish!

I may look for Vitapointe, thanks Bijou but I think I'll give 'Syruppy Figs', as it was known in our house, a miss!
Cod liver oil and malt - yum.

I can't remember the name of the tins of jelly-like stuff for chapped hands - obviously it didn't smell strongly because I remember DF using it after gardening.
Was it called Cremola?
He also used green soft soap and bay rum.

You can get syrup of figs and Vitapointe in Superdrug and cod liver oil and malt in Holland and Barrett. Andrews is widely available. I saw Exlax in Bargain Buys.
I was given Parrishes food and Scott's emulsion as well as syrup of figs as a child. My mother used to take Beechams Pills.
In the early 50's Virol and rose hip syrup was given free from the baby clinic.
There was no washing up liquid or rubber gloves in the 30s and had to use soda crystals.
For chapped hands there was a balm called Melrose.

Does anyone remember Sunsilk Water Lily Leaf Shampoo? From what I remember, it was a green square of paper with a water lily shape cut into it, you put your hand through the shape, wet your hair and rubbed the paper on to your hair, the soap in the paper made a great lather. Don't think it sold very well!

Senna pods, mother used to make an infusion for us to drink on a Saturday night to keep us "regular". It was vile, and I'm afraid I always poured mine down the sink when she wasn't looking, but my very good sister always drank hers. Says that is why she has IBS now!! Remember Melrose, it was a small block of a greasy substance which we used to rub on dry, sore hands or knees. I remember my very first item for my "beauty" regime, Ann French Cleansing Lotion. Used to buy it in Woolworths on the way home from school with some of my pocket money, very grown up I thought.

When I had a terrible cough my late MIL who lived in Lowestoft got me a vicious bottle of cough linctus called Hayden's Mixture, pure evil, but did the trick!

My mother was a nurse and swore by Acriflavine. My father used Friars Balsam and a Kaolin poultice for his chronic bronchitis. I had forgotten about them until reading these posts.
Until recently I had an old Zubes tine full of pins from my late mum's sewing box.
Instead of Andrew's Liver salts, my mother used Jaaps liver salts. It was apparently very good for the "morning after" feeling. Of course that did not apply to me. .

My teenage perfume was Apple Blossom,Helena Rubenstein I think. Later on it was Aqua Manda, which you can still get.
