'Age before beauty' when letting someone go upstairs or through a door first. Sometimes cheekily responded to with 'Pearls before Swine'!!

Still passing down through the family - unused cutlery called 'blessings' and put back in the drawer. Seemed to come from a rural Shropshire great great aunt but still being used today!

Chocolate teapot, comes to mind. I am alright jack, if you went up the stairs first after pushing in.

Scottish assistant in Smith's always calls me Doll which I love. I am nearly 68 ¡

Probably a regional one, I remember that saying. I am from SE London. My dad would say also if we left a door open was you born in a barn?

Definitely a family one : 'You're neither use nor ornament!' which shattered me as a ten year old. I believed my scary great aunt. She lived in Upper Norwood South London but was brought up in Shrewsbury. Sad to say I was wary of her until I was in my twenties and she was very ill. I went to see her in hospital and we got on like a house on fire! She even told my mother how well I'd turned out!

My OH says 'bit dark over Bill's Mothers'! He used to think they lived across the road

It means the same as 'Were you born in a field?' Well used Yorkshire/Lancashire phrase. 'Close the door' in other words.

Ninathenana I was born in Birmingham and it's a phrase I'm very familiar with, having heard it so many times as a child. A similar one was "Were you born in a barn!"

I'm a Brummie (not lived there since I was 11) an assistant in Sainsbury's in Buckinghamshire always calls me 'Me Duck'

I often say Gordon Bennett when surprised.

My gran would say 'Keep your hand on your happenny'

Incidentally I'm a southerner, from Essex, so I do think these sayings are more generational than regional

Yes definitely. I often say "put wood in the hole" as well as "not so green as he's cabbage looking" and "this won't knit the baby a new bonnet" (stop chatting or faffing about and get on with what needs to be done)).

This won't get the baby bathed and throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Have used this phrase many times. Born in Durham but lived in many parts of the UK but I think it's predominantly a northern saying.

Ah Greyduster in Wales it was 'this won't buy the baby a new bonnet'

"Well this won't get the bairn a new coat" (must stop wasting time and get on with things) was one a lovely Geordie friend of mine used to say quite often when we had been loafing about drinking coffee most of the morning!

Anything dirty my mam would say 'black as the hobs of hell' If I asked her what I should wear she'd reply 'your heavy georgette' and if I complained that I didn't want to wear a particular item 'no-one's going to stop a galloping horse to look at you'

To me, brought up in derbyshire, mardy meant cry baby and nesh means someone who is soft and especially someone who feels the cold.
Now i live in the E Midlands and hear Me Duck in the shops sometimes. Also my old boy for husband.
Ive heard most of the expresions me ntioned but not the rock bun one.
We always said charlies dead if a petticoat was showing and by extension a petticoat was a Charlie.

This has brought back back so many memories, I'm a Yorkshire lass with Lancashire relatives so many of these were commonly said. Once in a Preston Guild meant rare event (Preston Guild was every 30 years). Think a lot of these are very much of their time although I do still say things like "bent as a nine bob watch", !pot calling kettle black", youngsters definitely don't understand them.
