Yesterday at the supermarket checkout I stood behind a lady who had a display cardboard box full of iceberg lettuce on the conveyor belt.

Today I have read that iceberg lettuce is to be rationed.

If push came to shove, I'd substitute lettuce with finely grated cabbage. The only time I buy courgettes is when we're having roasted Mediterranean veg and DH isn't very keen on the texture anyway, but if broccoli were to disappear from supermarket shelves I'd go into a decline! as we eat it at least 4 times a week.

Plenty of courgettes in the freezer. We has some for lunch. I wouldn't have an iceberg lettuce as a gift, still less 3. I am another who would much prefers watercress. It tastes of something.

I did need to buy some mixed salad leaves today and there was no shortage of them today, but I think those are grown greenhouses in Holland and UK.

i suppose we will see a price increase when they do return to the supermarket shelves. Roll on the warmer weath when i can start to grow my own sald again.

As a man on the radio just said we can all live without lettuce especially in the winter, years ago they were a seasonal item we have just got use to having everything when we want it.

I like sue1169 eat a fair amount of salad myself especially celery, tomatoes and peppers so i know i can still have something fresh.

Lets hope it doesnt put people out of work in the fast food industry making salads and sandwiches to sell as lunches.

sue1169 Fri 03-Feb-17 14:48:21

I eat salad every day.love it...but would never buy a tasteless iceberg lettuce....

Elegran Fri 03-Feb-17 14:35:13

Tesco won't let anyone "bulk buy" more than three Iceberg lettuces. Why would any private individual need to buy more than three lettuces? Caterers will surely be buying their veg and salad wholesale anyway, not from the supermarket.

felice Fri 03-Feb-17 14:34:17

SIL just suggested that perhaps there is a wall being built on the Channel coast from Courgettes and we will charge the English for themwinkgrin

felice Fri 03-Feb-17 14:29:30

Saw this on the news this morning, I have just been to my local supermarket, no shortages here, maybye mainland Europe is getting them all first.grin
Don't like courgettes and not the season for Salad anyway.

trisher Fri 03-Feb-17 14:06:14

Oh Badenkate is this another reason for the North/South divide? They're taking all the courgettes? We need to take action, they should set up an all-party parliamentary enquiry immediately.

goldengirl Fri 03-Feb-17 12:32:33

While I like a salad anytime of the year I can't get excited about not being able to buy a lettuce. It might make us choose something different. I don't remember salads in winter as a child so I'm not getting my knickers in a twist about it.

POGS Fri 03-Feb-17 12:27:35

Oddly enough we went shopping yesterday and iceberg lettuce and courgette were on the list.

None in Aldi, none in Tesco , none in Morrison's and I paid £1.19p in Lidl where they are normally 49p but on this occasion I paid it. Didn't get a courgette!

Yes it is due to weather conditions , it happens, back to beans on toast and bread and dripping I suppose. grin

Did you know if you wrap your Iceberg in tin foil it will keep very well in a fridge, try it.

Granof11 Fri 03-Feb-17 11:39:36

I've noticed that my local Aldi (Wirral) has been very low on broccoli for some weeks now and hasn't had any courgettes at all since Christmas. I just thought it was poor timing on my part. Oh well, just have to raid the freezer again.

Badenkate Fri 03-Feb-17 11:35:47

No courgettes here sad and I use them a lot in cooking for stirfrys. No yellow peppers either. I think you lot down south are taking them all before they get to us angry

sunseeker Fri 03-Feb-17 11:15:58

Whilst there probably is a shortage I can't help thinking the supermarkets are trying to cause "panic buying", and put up prices. I also heard on a news broadcast that frozen food suppliers have said they have plenty of stock and while I prefer fresh I think I could manage on frozen for a couple of months.

Greyduster Fri 03-Feb-17 11:06:09

It won't bother me; I hate salads and can't see the point of lettuce. Like cherrytree i am a big fan of watercress though. The was plenty of both broccoli and courgettes in the local market yesterday but they were more expensive than usual. So were new potatoes.
"however did we manage before the shops were filled with all sorts of stuff whatever the season?". Precisely! It was all a bit boring though!

Alima Fri 03-Feb-17 10:48:57

Maybe the person with boxes of lettuce runs a catering business. Like Roses said, won't bother me as it is too cold for salads just now. Apparently Spain have had awful weather which will lead to shortages of whatever they grow. Will just have to adapt, be like the old days when fruit and veg. used to be 'in season". Will we cope, have to sort a veg patch in the garden.

trisher Fri 03-Feb-17 10:48:11

Oh I can see lot of under hand dealing amongst GNers- Swap you 1 of my iceberg lettuces for some broccoli and a courgette for some spinach!
However did we manage before the shops were filled with all sorts of stuff whatever the season?

MawBroon Fri 03-Feb-17 10:41:43

Iceberg rationing sounds ridiculous, but even better was the news item which made me grin -
broccoli rationing at Morrisons!
My digestive system really can't take broccoli, so if anybody wants my share (nudge, nudge, wink, wink) I am sure we could come to an arrangement.
Sitting in Waitrose café and happy to report no shortages or rationing in the veggie aisles smile?????

Nelliemoser Fri 03-Feb-17 10:32:26

Iceberg lettuce really does not keep as well as other varieties. It is green, crispy and relatively tasteless and that is it. I always use Romaine or Cos which keep very well.
I do/did use courgettes quite a lot.
Spring greens are good at present. I do love salad my though.

I suspect that people who rarely buy or eat any salad will be rushing out to buy it now in case they cannot get it.
Unfortunately that does seem to happen. Then all those people will be dumping the salad they did not use before it went off.
Oh I am a cynic. grin

Cherrytree59 Fri 03-Feb-17 10:28:11

Iceberg is not something I would have in my salad.
I prefer rocket and large watercress
So I am willing to donate my iceberg to anyone that wants it

grin gilly at least there was a bottle of wine in the bag!
I have heard about courgette shortage but as yet we are still able to buy them locally

I roast my salad veg at this time of year

Christinefrance Fri 03-Feb-17 10:27:27

That made me chuckle Gillybob.
I think catering establishments are buying from the supermarkets due to the shortages. Do you think we should be suspicious of supermarkets maybe exploiting this a little. No of course not.?

gillybob Fri 03-Feb-17 10:19:50

I did think of him when I took the sharp knife to them though roses grin

Maggiemaybe Fri 03-Feb-17 10:07:21

Form an orderly queue......

Maggiemaybe Fri 03-Feb-17 10:07:02

I could make a killing with all those courgettes in the freezer from last year's harvest then! Broad beans aren't on ration too, are they?

rosesarered Fri 03-Feb-17 09:52:50

gilly grin

gillybob Fri 03-Feb-17 09:51:03

Perhaps she was going to gorge herself on lettuce just incase she never sees one again !

DH (silly man) came in from work last night with a carrier bag, announcing that he had a present for me. The bag contained a bottle of red wine and 2 courgettes. Grinning from ear to ear he handed me..... Not the wine but the 2 courgettes saying " I heard they were in short supply and thought of you when I saw them on the shelf"

they were huge and I didn't think of him when he handed them to me wink
