Thank you for the music..

I love all kinds of music from Classical to Modern.
One particular song though really makes me turn up the radio wherever I am whether in the car or at home is:
Happy, by Pharrell Williams.
Do any other Gransnetters find this song as captivating as I do?

Yes! It does what it celebrates.
Music of most genres is important to my life too.

But the music that moves me most is Opera as it is a direct link to my father, dead for the past 46 years, who had to give up a career as a promising tenor in order to support his family more realistically.

Oh yes, can't live without music. It helps me through housework, keeps me sane, makes me happy, renders me speechless sometimes. Mostly I listen to Classic fm, but I also love what is called "The Great American Songbook", songs from musicals, Freddie Mercury, Buddy Holly, The Beatles, The Eagles, Abba .... but I'm not at all into modern stuff or rap.

I wonder what those who have grown up with rap and hip-hop will do for their oldies music... it just does not seem to fit: Picture this at the care home can you?

Having a good sing-along session, punctuated with shouts of four letter words and gangsta hand gestures around the ghetto-blaster.

I could never get enough of Michael Jackson.
My favourite 'One day in your Life' brings back wonderful memories.

The humming chorus (think it's called that) always makes me cry. From madame butterfly. It is being streamed to cinemas soon!

I play music through my PC, whilst working about upstairs. However, my DH has the same idea at the same time and we have very diverse tastes. It just lifts my spirits to have music playing whilst I'm doing boring tasks. I use You Tube a lot and have discovered lots of new artists through this medium.

I love music, have the radio on all day, I hum most of the time and dont realise until people say they enjoyed the tune!
I was brought up in Liverpool in the 60,s and the whole City was MUSIC it was lovely.I think music makes people happy, and it is said it helps people with dementia too.

I haven't heard of that song!

I think of all the "classical" composers, Schubert nailed it most effectively! There's such simplicity about much of his composition, as well as the drama and emotion of, say, the Unfinished. He didn't get stale or clichéd, perhaps because he died so young.....

I'm another Schubert fan, I also adore Bach and Beethoven.
I loathe almost all 20th century music (and the art and architecture too. Was everything ugly in that wickedly violent century?)

My favourite piece of classical music is Debussy's Arabesque. I found this on YouTube which gives a whole new look at the piece. Other animations on there worth viewing as well.

All the songs that Liverpool gave us from the 50's onwards! Marvellous. Billy Fury used to make me go wobbly around the knees ( that was just a poster of him, good job I never got to meet him.)

A song or piece of music instantly takes you back to where you were at the time, am sure there must be all sorts that I could recall, but today on the radio was a song from a while back that took me instantly to Rome, in a small cafe in the street by the Coliseum ( having a coffe and snack, in tired mode from a lot of walking around with our three teenagers) and it was .....no, not O Sole Mio, or Arrividerci Roma, but Chumwumba wumba ? I Get Knocked Down, and I Get Up Again ( you never going to keep me down) remember the lyrics? 'he drinks a lager drink, he drinks a vodka drink '
Etc.The cafe had a little radio blasting this out.The children were delighted by it, and we had to laugh.

I'm still not able to use my left hand sufficiently well to play my piano since breaking my wrist in the summer. Those of you who are pianists will appreciate the chords can be a real stretch and ditto arpeggio-like movements in the bass clef need supple wrists and strength.

So I've bought a keyboard ??? and spend a few hours discovering what it can do while I plonk out the tune melody line with my right hand (which still functions)

Trouble is I feel I'm cheating ???
