You don't have to talk politics in the village shop, you don't have to respond if someone says something outrageous that you disagree with.

Although I suppose Luckygirl could always stand outside the village shop with a banner saying 'This Woman is a Trump Supporter and Condones Torture' and get people to boycott the shop.

I was listening to a R4 discussion about torture months ago. The expert said "it's been found the tortured only give captors info their captors expect. As the UK seem to share all info with the US, Trump should be made aware of this succinct finding. Unless the FBI/CIA would prefer Trump gone.

Why don't the people who are against Trump's state visit, hold rallies outside the Saudi embassy? We all know of the Saudi's continual oppression of women.

Disappointed in people who have responded suggesting that the difference between right and wrong is just a matter of opininon.

A couple of people where I work are always telling everyone how Donald Trump is a misogynist and a racist and how his actions and policies are so awful ( no regard for the fact he was voted in my the US people on those policies).

I simply agree with them.

The problem is though, since I just let the protesters get on with it, they no doubt think I agree with them and that everyone agrees with them.

In the same vein if we do not protest against the Trump then we could be seen to agree with his racist and misogynistic views.

I feel that if I say nothing then it will be assumed that I agree with racist comments. But it can be very difficult when it is a friend or family member spouting the nonsense.

I would have thought QEII takes unsavoury people in her stride. Look at all the years she had to suffer Margaret Thatcher.

I to was brought up to avoid discussing Religion & Politics. I worked for some time as a Barmaid & it stood me in good stead. I live in a small town, our Village Shop (we're on the outskirts) is run by a lovely couple & staff, always chatty, local issues are discussed but wider Politics ignored.

I would have smiled and changed the topic of conversation. I actually believe that we would be best served by keeping our noses out of other countries politics. Trump has exempted UK citizens with duel passports so it no longer affects us. If we want to do a trade deal with US after Brexit it is not in our interest to judge. I do not really see why people are surprised. He said he would do this in his pre-election rallies. Americans voted for this as they want him to crack down on ISIS which is world wide threat. There are a lot of other leaders in parts of the world who treat people far worse than Trump including torture. All Trump has done is temporary stopped them from coming into his country not torture them. I actually think many people signed as they want to jeopardise trade deal with US as they mistakenly think this will mean we will stay in single market when May has already said EU will not allow this if UK want to regulate its own immigration policy. The Queen will not be embarrassed. Trump will still come on state visit. Parliament will waste a lot of time debating something that will not change. Ultra left wing petitions on things usually make no difference.

Sparkly grandma we too are the only guardian readers in the area and get a lot of good natured joshing sbout our 'liberal lefty views'!
So marieeliz its not all one sided but depend where you live. Sonetimes we keep quiet to avoid being shouted down by right wingers. Though i do try to speak up if i feel very strongly eg when there are rcist remarks. They look quite surprised and then we change the subject usually!
I hAve to say brexit is rarely discussed so i have very little idea how my neighbours voted though most of my friends (not necessarily local) were/are remainers.

I signed the petition because, although it won't make any difference, it does send a strong message that even people here in the UK aren't happy with the way Donald Trump are making outrageous laws willy-nilly. He's quite a buffoon, isn't here, and may prove to be even more dangerous than we could ever have managed. The next four years will be interesting for onlookers, although not so great for others when new laws impact on them personally.

Surely the queen is capable of deciding wether a state visit from any person is a good thing for our country. A petition suggests we do not trust her judgement. I am sure she has seen/heard of all the protest etc and is more than capable of doing what's right for the country. Like or hate Trump his is still the president of the USA as voted in by the people

Trump was elected to rid USA of ISIS supporters. He said h would do that and he is doing that. He was elected to strengthen USA's borders and he is doing that. Our government doesn't bother to actually honour any of its election pledges.

The Queen shook hands with Martin Mc guinness so she won`t mind shaking hands with DT she might also offer him a cheek for him to kiss. When the visit is over she can get back to the job of teaching her family how to KILL ANIMALS AND BIRDS.

Trump is demanding - and receiving - far, far too much global attention in the media and on social media. He is a self-centred showman, bully and idiot. I know it's almost impossible, but if we were ALL to ignore him and leave him in his own self-obsessed wilderness, he might wither on his stalk (if he's got one!).

Back to Trump's boast about 'Nailing Lady Di'. Why do so many Americans have a problem with the upgrade from Lady to Princess? Odd!

Anyway, I'm sure she'd have reacted with one of her favourite phrases, 'In his dreams!'

My response would be what my mum used to say: two wrongs don't make a right. Another one from the Christian Bible: do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Regarding fighting fire with fire: the fire service would tell you that this only leads to total conflagration. Think on!

Fortunately our local shops in the village are owned by families of immigrant heritage so am able to have some intelligent conversations
