School reports- what were yours like?

For French: Linda has a good flow of language! Well, I did go on to be a translator!

Every single one had chatterbox written in red ink, the same happened with my DD and now her daughter gets the same comment

Perhaps. It's even worse now! Even I can't read it.

Mine always said I was too quiet. They often said I could do better though I was always in the A stream at Juniors and then went to Grammar School - I think adults generally could not praise children in those days.

I was very small compared with the rest of my class, taught P.E. by a big butch woman. Two reports one 'Weak' one Poor'. I could never get over that horse thing in the gym. Would like Miss P. to see me now at 80+ going to gym 3 times a week !

Spelling, English,I got A,s Reading and Courtesy B,s the rest mainly C,s no comments on the School reports I have saved since 1947. Became a Nurse so cant have been too bad!

Mine were often in the can do better category despite the fact I was in the top stream for everything. Finally left school with 3 GCEs. I've always found exams difficult.

My DH excelled at RE - difficult to believe, he wasn't a natural pupil, rather be off fishing, bird-nesting or playing on bomb sites. A rebelious child

I was quiet & a little shy at school, still am when I meet new people but once I feel comfortable with a group I'm a livewire

My nephew had terrible school reports, his parents (both teachers) despaired of him. They were all "Less than satisfactory" and "Lacks motivation" sort of remarks. As for history, his teacher wrote that he showed "Little interest" What became of this academic failure? He is now a doctor of archaeology at Edinburgh University and travels the world giving lectures and leading excavations.

I had a horrible chemistry teacher, and a dentist who loved chemistry - I used to make sure my appointments were on chem homework days and he would explain it to me so that I not only understood, I even found it mildly interesting. I remember my report for the subject said 'occasionally shows real intelligence' If only the teacher had known why! Oh and the dentist was c**p, gave me fillings every time .....

Mine read, which left a scar ... muddle headed ... still am, but only because I was labelled so young. :-(

I have both mine and my brother's reports. He died in 2010. His last year he and 3 others played truant for three weeks. No phones in those days so it took a long time for us to find out. They went out on their bikes all day.

In his last report it says, in the Headteachers comments, "despite John's recent fall from grace" I am prepared to write a favourable reference for John to enlist in the Royal Navy. My brother had always said he was joining the Navy so did not really need to go to school. He got in and did really well becoming top of the class in the RN Hydrographic school.

When I came away from the prizegiving at the end of my school career, laden with prizes, including 'dux' girl, my one-time teacher in Primary 2 looked me up and down and said, 'I never expected that of you.' I don't think she possessed the vocabulary for congratulating someone.

I must have had a similar headmistress flaxwoven. In 1968 when choosing A level subjects I was told 'I don't know why you think you could be a vet, what you need to do is get a nice little secretarial job somewhere in an office overlooking fields where you can see animals'. How's that for lateral thinking .

After my GCE results in 1966 my head teacher told me "you're not' 'A' level material, dear, I should do a secretarial course."

Maths: 'shows no understanding of the subject at all'. Still doesn't!
English: 'another excellent year - goes from strength to strength'.
Everything else? Mediocre. Except art. I was good at art.

I still have the DCs school reports, and one of DH's which we draw a veil over!

Yep mine was could do better. Always said I was a well behaved and well mannered child but that don't get you anywhere.

No, but I have never forgotten that remark about because it was so funny!

All of which lead to me being punished at home on a regular basis and my mother encouraging the Head Mistress (Convent school) to summons me to her office.

I was hideously bullied at school but didn't dare tell my parents because 'We're paying a fortune to have you educated and turn you into a young lady'

From my RE teacher; X is very argumentative.
What did he expect? I've been an atheist all my life, so I was never going to agree with him!

Many of my Junior School reports said, "Dorice lacks confidence."
I was full of confidence at home and playing out on our council estate with my friends but school made me feel inferior and I was ridiculed by one teacher for my broad Oldham accent.
When I eventually became a teacher myself it was something of a mission to support and nurture every child to the best of my ability.

Not my report buy my son'so (who's now 26) written by one of his infant school teacher. ...He will be lucky to pass any of his English GCSE's...He took that to heart but with encouragement from me and his Dad he did pass both Language & Literature (with C's) and then completed a degree with a great 2.1 as a Mechanical/Automotive Engineer Teachers should be made accountable for writing such things!
