Perhaps we should ask Galen as she likes going on cruises - if it is really true about 'port out, starboard home'.

My mother had a 'posh' friend who used to pass down some of her daughter's expensive party frocks to me when I was a little girl.
I didn't mind 2nd hand so probably wasn't posh.

My Great Aunt always had fruit arranged in cut glass bowl
It was plastic!

We must have been posh because my mother used to buy fruit every week and arrange it carefully in the fruit bowl.

We'd then ignore until it rotted grin

As a child I think it would be a lady in a fur coat grin.

Now I wouldn't use 'posh' to describe a person.
A hotel or restauran maybe.

My mother knew her neighbours were posh (as a child) because they had fruit when no-one was ill

I've just noticed a new member with "posh" in her name. Welcome. But it started me thinking. What was your understanding of the word posh when you were a child. And what is it now?

For me, as a child it was someone who had clothes for summer/winter. A friend asked "have you gone into your winter clothes yet". I was 10 and she was younger. I didn't know what she meant. Nowadays i think it's posh if you have your dinner as your last meal.
