If you want to get rid of a witch, throw her into the duckpond. She will either drown or not. If she bobs up again and doesn't drown, she is proved to be a witch, so burn her and get rid of her. If she doesn't bob up again, and does drown, she is not a witch, but you have got rid of her anyway. She can't win, can she? ^"Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live^" - or admit that maybe you were wrong and she wasn't a witch at all.
If you accuse a whole lot of posters of being a clique, they will either:-
a) - ignore you, and not deny it - which you then interpret as admitting that it is true.
or
b) - reply that it is a ridiculous assertion, point out the difference between agreeing with a post and conspiring together, and make jokes about not being named and asking to join the "gang" - which you then interpret as providing proof that you were right and there is indeed a clique.
Have you heard of Morton's Fork? John Morton, Archbishop of Canterbury in the fifteenth century, was a collector of taxes who held that someone living modestly must be saving money and therefore, could afford taxes, whereas those living extravagantly obviously were rich and could afford them as well. Thus he got the maximum he could squeeze out of everyone. If he didn't get it with one argument, he got it with the other - they were caught on one prong or other of the fork.
