I really like Willy Nelson so You were always on my mind" was never going to be a song where I hated the lyrics. I'd have rather liked being on Willy Nelson's mind, to be honest. Equally, I wasn't enthusiastic about the Elvis version.

The one that confuses my judgement is Earl's Gotta Die by the Dixie Chicks. I am a lifelong pacifist and even when I lived with a violent partner who tried to kill me on more than one occasion, my reactions were defensive rather than offensive – but I rejoice in that song and still occasionally sing it in the shower!

We all loved Young Girl by Gary Pucket in my class at school, i remember it on Top of the Pops, i was 15, I think it's a misunderstood song. He's singing about a young girl just a few years younger than himself. We all could identify with it and of course we all fantasised over the gorgeous Gary Pucket.

Ah, thank you. That explains a lot, I never really got into "MASH" (only with sausages and onions!)

In the film it's a rather dark joke. The dentist is known by the nickname 'painless'

I dislike the "MASH" theme song lyrics.. suicide is painless, it brings on many changes..
The sweaty song - girl I'm gonna make you sweat, and its ridiculous "a la la la la la long long li long long long!" chorus..

I just think the Willie Nelson song is romantic - wherever I roamed, being a hero, a musician, a sailor, an explorer - whatever - you were always on my mind.
He doesn't mention being unfaithful.
Just that he was not always there when she may have needed him.

Perhaps some people have always had a stay-at-home OH!!

Did you look at Jalima's link re the Sting song? Sting says it is nasty and evil.

When I saw the thread title "Lyrics you Hate", You Were Always on my Mind was the first song I thought of, then I clicked on it and found great minds think alike Jayanna. I hate the lyrics for exactly the same reasons you do!
I also agree with one of the postings above about "Young Girl" and feel the same about "Happy Birthday Sweet 16" - "Now you're grown up your future is sown up - from now on you're gonna be mine" Yuk!

Perhaps the songwriter had to travel the world for his job and just wasn't always there when his OH needed him

I like both songs...you were always on my mind ,and gentle on my mind, both rather nice.I also like the Sting one.

I love m You Were Always On My Mind if sung by Willie Nelson, but admit I would listen to God Save The Queen if he sang it

I think some of you are being unfairly judgemental.

Perhaps the songwriter wrote the song after realising the error of his/her ways.

Lellyb - I feel the same about "Gently on my mind". The singer takes on no responsibilities and only loves the woman because he is unencumbered by her. How immature and selfish. Grrrr!

Every time I heard 'You were always on my mind' I have a mad rant. It goes something like this

Song: maybe I didn't love you
Me: clearly you didn't, you **&%@
Song: Tell me your sweet love hasn't died
Me: what do you think, you **£@%$$$.
Song: give me one more chance
Me: Dream on dreamer

Etc., etc.,

Jalima there was a rowdy party at a marina we stayed in in Orillia, Ontario.
The party people sang it with gusto, but MrA and I, not having been invited, were lying in our bunk reading our kindles. It did lighten up our Sunday evening though
