I have been very lucky and have been given £1000 to spend but with a caveat that says it has to be spent not saved and must be used for me and no one else other than my DH if need be and must be used by the end of this year.
I am not a big spender and really dont buy much for myself and tend to save not spend To be honest there is really nothing i need and i am stumped. What would you do with the money ?
P.S i know i am lucky

It all depends on what is important to you. If you can identify something - maybe a holiday(s) or some sort of experience, something for your home or a hobby that you have always wanted to get but have felt it was too extravagant, here's your opportunity.

GRANNYPIPER. ....Do.please let us know how your £1000
Spending Spree is going along x ??

Witzend gosh that made me laugh. Have thought of something else to spend a bit of the money on, i have about a dozen photographs of my parents and back to my GGGrandparents that have damage and i keep meaning to have them repaired so i shall do that and have an album made for each of my children.

Witzend Wed 04-Jan-17 17:12:29

A holiday or a lovely antique, or anything you wouldn't normally splurge on. A really lovely sheepskin coat?? A piece of jewellery?
The one thing I wouldn't spend it on personally is anything like spa days - I absolutely hate the thought of being massaged/mauled about/exposing my flab to innocent strangers,
I know I'm weird, though - so dds have told me when I've warned them never to get me spa/massage vouchers as a present!

what a lovely treat, I agree with the idea of a holiday or something nice to wear such as a lovely winter coat or some nice boots but why not just put the money away for the time being until you think of something. The benefactor cannot have expected it to be spent in a rush. Enjoy it.

What a lovely gift. I'd definitely give some to my charities, and then perhaps a super day out in London - always wanted to go to the Royal Opera or see a good play. Actually Glyndbourne isn't too far from me. Dreams!!smile

I love paintings by Nel Whatmore. I think I would choose one of those. Beautiful vibrant colours.

Love your spend at the Co-op today, that is my sort of happiness too. Do not forget to take a photo of the food mountain for this weeks buy.

I hope you enjoy your gift.

Daddima Tue 03-Jan-17 19:30:54

Royal Ascot mentioned on another thread. Could that be a plan?

Daddima Tue 03-Jan-17 19:11:30

I'm just looking at the thread about afternoon tea at Claridge's. Wouldn't you like to do that kind of thing?
I'd go for a trip or experience I'd not normally be able/willing to afford, as I'm not a big fan of " stuff".
What about paying for a course to learn a new skill?

Maggieanne Tue 03-Jan-17 19:01:03

Lucky girl, I'm sure you deserve it. Take time to think about it and spend it on what you really want. How lovely that someone thinks so much of you.

Grannyben Tue 03-Jan-17 18:51:13

I certainly wouldn't find this gift an embarrassment if it has been given with love. I can remember when we were getting married my mother in law gave me £50 and said she wanted me have something just for me. I thought that was lovely of her as I never had anything to spend on myself. Now, I would have a few bits for the house, a little shed and it would be lovely to get a new outfit

grannypiper Tue 03-Jan-17 17:18:30

Alidoll love the idea of a 52 week photobook, i will start that tomorrow.

grannypiper Tue 03-Jan-17 17:16:48

marpau i lived on the German/ Dutch border and everytime i went to kuekenhoff to see the bulbs it was the worst Spring in years, i gave up and just bought a broucher instead!
Mumsy i had thousands of books and had to get rid after one of the 3 a towers beside my bed fell on me ! I vowed to only use the library after that !
ExaltedWombat i understand your thinking i really do, i never buy something without really needing it, have always put others needs before mine, have made monthly charity donations since i started work at 13. In fact every single pair of trousers in my wardrobe is over 10 years old and all of my coats and jackets have been new still with tags from charity shops. Maybe my DF thought it was my turn !
P.S spent £10.01 on reduced food in the co-op today and nearly filled the freezer, now thats my idea of a good time

David1968 Tue 03-Jan-17 16:57:43

Definitely some sort of holiday/break/event. ("Experiences" are what's remembered!) Go for it!

123kitty Tue 03-Jan-17 16:47:30

Loosen up Exaulted Wombat we're all enjoying spending this.

hulahoop Tue 03-Jan-17 15:37:52

How lovely I would go for artwork or jewelry or some household thing that still works or is old just enjoy ?

joannewton46 Tue 03-Jan-17 15:15:03

Definitely a nice holiday to somewhere you've always wanted to go but couldn't justify the cost. After a lifetime of thinking before you spend, it's hard.

VIOLETTE Tue 03-Jan-17 14:54:15

what a fantastic surprise ! Have a look around you home and see if there is anything you can think of to make your life easier .(a luxury reclining chair (maybe with massage !) ....then a weekend away in a lovely hotel you would not normally splurge on (maybe in a town with an antiques fair) a painting you just love ...a bird bath for you enjoy watching in the garden ...(portable perhaps, so if you move you can take it with you),,,,,the choice is endless ! you have to do what would make you happiest and also to remember the person who gave it to you !

Whatever you choose ..I do hope you enjoy the thinking about it and the gift when you get it !

Maggiemaybe Tue 03-Jan-17 14:33:21

Oh, I'd go for a good TV. We've no hesitation at all in spending on holidays and treats, but both DH and I always find it hard to replace things if they're still in good working order. Sadly for us, our 26" telly still is and we have to keep running up to the screen these days to see any words that appear (Sherlock and Only Connect are a nightmare!). And if I'd anything left it'd go on perfume.

Do enjoy treating yourself, grannypiper!

Legs55 Tue 03-Jan-17 14:02:04

An original Ashley Jackson for me - I have a couple of signed prints, jewellery is a must for me & perhaps a designer handbag.

On a practical level a greenhouse is a must - planning on having one but I will have to save.

Grannypiper I would definitely go for some permanent items , see you've already bought some artwork, enjoy your "windfall"flowers

sarahellenwhitney Tue 03-Jan-17 13:55:39

Surely a gift should not come with conditions?
Take your time until you know what you really want to spend it on.

Bez1989 Tue 03-Jan-17 13:22:26

GRANNY PIPER. ...In the sales at Furniture Village...a lovely comfy sofa ??

petra Tue 03-Jan-17 13:18:08

I love Edwardian jewellery, so that would be my indulgence.

Mrsdof Tue 03-Jan-17 13:15:45

I'd plump for a holiday with yourself and your DH. What lovely memories you can make, something you'll never forget! ?
