The holly has shriveled, the ivy's gone limp,
When I glance in the mirror I resemble a blimp.

The fridge now contains such a random selection,
Please let the recycling be due for collection!

The number of bottles could put us to shame,
Thank heavens the neighbours are partly to blame.

The dregs in the bottle of port look quite murky,
And even the cats have lost interest in turkey.

I've run out of money, I've run out of cheer,
I can't get excited about a New Year

I felt the same last year I seem to remember,
But the magic returns with each new December.

Sending every good wish to GN'ers, old & new,
And may 2017 be a good year for you.

Phoenix xx

Perfect New Year's Eve - a wonderful meal with friends in a delightful hotel. Dancing till midnight, laughing, having FUN. Lots of kissing and hugging as 2017 arrives. Retiring to your amazing hotel room - a restful nights sleep.......
Reality - staying in because the dog hates fireworks, being desperate to go to bed but managing to reach midnight. The dog freaking out and barking like crazy at every bang. Saying "Happy New Year" to my husband, retiring to bed. Eventually husband and dog (??) join me......4.25am dog kicks off again and I swear (*@!!*@) and disappear to spare bed! Happy New Year to you ALL!!

Your a lovely lot and poets as well. My admiration knows no bounds. Best wishes to you all. Thanks for all the support since that 'horror of the half term' I've appreciated it.

I sit here all snuggly,
On New Year's morn
The day's hardly started,
It's awaiting the dawn

The cork was popped
Now the Champagne's all drunk,
I'd have shared it with son
But he did a bunk.

So I've shared my festivities
With my feathered friends and fur,
With my friends in the tele
Who always seem to be there.

And on occasion,
When I've wanted a natter,
I've turned to Gransnet
Because it's my good friends who matter.

Happy 2017, may it bring you joy, peace and good health. Xxx

Big smile to all you poets ???

Rinouchka Sat 31-Dec-16 09:09:51

Our last baby has left
And am feeling bereft
But it won't be for long
As am writing a song
To give my emotions
Some musical notions
And see out the year
With friends near and dear
Not forgetting the hubby
So slim, never tubby,
Whose elegant frame
Counterbalances this dame!

Happy endings, happier beginnings! wine

Oh the weather outside is dreary
And the windows are dirty and smeary
And I've got no place to go
And now it's beginning to snow
Let it go let let it go let it go
The kitchen is not delightful
The oven looks rather frightful
The cupboards look extremely bare
And still it's snowing out there
Gonna hide in bed in day
Until the winter goes away
Except the bed it needs a changing
And the lounge needs re arranging
Want stay in pajamas all day
And read my life away
Now the dog wants to take me walking
Through the streets well go a stalking
Dragging all through the snow
Let it go let it go let it go

Iam64 Sat 31-Dec-16 08:27:36

What a talented lot you are, love the rhymes/poems

downtoearth Sat 31-Dec-16 08:26:42

Ooooh hadn't finished that !!
My jeans are all stretching
And I've broken my zip
But tonight I'll be dancing
With gusto and cheer
So I will bid you good day
And a happy healthy prosperous newyear

downtoearth Sat 31-Dec-16 08:22:17

Merry Christmas one and all
Glad to hear you've had a ball
Lots of presents food and cheer
This week I've had Christmas and birthday
And now it's new year
My purse is empty
The house is a tip

Grandchildren are here
So I'm still full of cheer

My place is a wreck
But what the heck!

Just back from Aladdin
And we're all a gladdin

They're now Harry Pottering
And I'm gin & tonicering tchgrin

JackyB Fri 30-Dec-16 21:30:12

Weeks of planning, shopping, baking
Working out who's sleeping where
Two months of Christmas in the making
Three generations will all be there

Then it's all over in the wink of an eye
And Nanna sits down and thinks with a sigh
Why did I bother with tidying and cleaning?
It's only the togetherness that really has meaning.

Next year before Christmas I'll leave all the dust
And only cook anything I really must
I'll brush up on nursery rhymes, fairy tales, silly songs
And be the Nanna for which every child really longs

ninathenana Fri 30-Dec-16 21:17:54

Well done everyone wine

rosesarered Fri 30-Dec-16 21:16:07

Great poems, loved them all! tchgrin
Here is a short one.....ahem (noisy throat clearing noise)

Christmas comes but once a year
Baileys, egg nog , bottles of beer
Mince pies, stollen, naughty treats
Freezing fingers, snowy streets,

Lots of carols ,lots of cheer
Robins, cards, and reindeer
Music, laughter, loads of thrills
And come tomorrow, lots of bills.

Antonia Fri 30-Dec-16 21:12:02

The choccies are eaten
We've had a great time,
With roast pork and veggies
And excellent wine.

The tree is still up
With baubles aglow,
And outside it is frosty
With some hint of snow.

It was peaceful and quiet,
Just husband and me,
Grandchildren on Skype
Such a pleasure to see.

And this is a year
So near to its end
Let's all hope for blessings
The next one may send.

Happy New Year to all of you!

merlotgran Fri 30-Dec-16 21:00:39

Well....Life's back to normal, of that you can bet
When the treat of the day is a bill from the vet
The turkey is gone but the ham and the cheese
Will be made into dishes I'm going to freeze

The telly is rubbish, the weather is cold
And New Year's nearly here but we're still in the old
I need something different to brighten my day
Now the Christmas tree baubles are all put away

We should be out walking to shift all the pounds
But the weather's so foggy, you can't see the end of the garden grounds!
The mince pies and stollen were great at the time
But waste in our house is considered a crime

The dogs aren't allowed them - not that they'd care
But hang on....The bird table's looking quite bare
Tomorrow I'll give them a post Christmas treat
Just so long as the raisins don't stick to their feet tchshock

Now the bin's been collected, the washing is done
It seems ages ago that we had so much fun
But it's lovely to slump by the fire with a gin brew
So a Happy New Year, folks....From me to you

DanniRae Fri 30-Dec-16 20:20:16

Great poems! Keep them coming........ grin

GrandmaMoira Fri 30-Dec-16 20:01:43

I love the poems.

Greyduster Fri 30-Dec-16 19:33:26

Well, there we go, another year done.
Christmas, a mix of angst and of fun,
Is consigned to the dustbin, with food out of date,
And mountains of nibbles that nobody ate.
We've chucked out the last of the chocolate log,
And nursed our hangovers with hairs of the dog.
We'll see the New Year in with a flourish, and then
Before you can turn round, it's Christmas again!
Happy New Year!

hulahoop Fri 30-Dec-16 19:32:53

You are being very poetic the poems are very good cheers to all ??? ?

KatyK Fri 30-Dec-16 19:22:28

I've feeling quite porky it has to be said
It's taking me longer to get out of bed
The turkey and stuffing, the mince pies and cheese
I've shovelled them in with remarkable ease
I've washed the lot down with gallons of booze
I must have at least a stone now to lose
There's turkey and bacon and sausage still here
And sherry and wine and bottles of beer
I can't bear to waste it, that really won't do
I'll have to consume it, so cheers to you! wine

Iam64 Fri 30-Dec-16 19:06:17

Thanks DaphneBroom for this verse. It sounds as though your fridge and approach to this time of year is similar to mine. The fridge is still full of goodies, there are some tasty (M&S) party pieces in the freezer in case we don't feel like cooking. I love mince pies and brandy butter, love chocolate log, Christmas cake and cheese. The tree is in the conservatory, so its still in perfect state. Log burner lit, door to conservatory open as it's so warm in the sitting room. Dogs had a very long walk, so did we, this morning so they are snuggled up near he fire, snoring.

Love it. I'll be organised by 12th night and put all the decorations back in their various boxes, clean the house and count my blessings.

DaphneBroon Fri 30-Dec-16 18:54:27

Happy New Year to you! ??
But my fridge is still full
Which is just as well
As the shopping is cruel
I love the leftovers
Albeit inventive
And booze at when I fancy ?
Makes me still feel quite festive
The decs haven't drooped yet ?
(More than I can say about me)
And I like mince pies with brandy butter for tea.
No the 12 days of Christmas are still proving jolly
Who cares if the berries have dropped off the holly
Outside it is cold, with frost and with fog
But I'm snug here indoors
With a hair of the dog ??

suzied Fri 30-Dec-16 18:44:46

Thank you so much !
Have chucked out the tree
And looking forward to
Tomorrows partee.
( not as good a poet as you Phoenix!)
