Donkey stone is a sort of soft sandstone...it came in various shades. You scrubbed the step then rubbed the stone on it until it was all covered. Was my job as a child and I hated it when anyone stood on my step and ruined it (which someone always did because it was a wide step).
So many on here I remember . Collecting a coin from the local shop when you returned a drinks bottle - a good way of making some money if you could collect them from other people - recycling before it was known as that. Taking a packet of sugar to the local sweetshop to be able to buy some sweets but the scrappings from making sweets such as pear drops were sold off without this.
Cars with running boards, and those little indicators that used to flick out at the side when you needed to go round a corner. And starting handles for when desperation set in!
Sellotaping my 'kiss curls' to the side of my face when I went to bed so that they would stay in for the morning and sellotaping my fringe so that it didn't stick out
Watching my mum putting sheets through a mangle. Going to the grocers for half a pound of butter which he took from a big slab and patted into shape with two wooden patter things.
kitchen cabinets with glass doors at the top and a drop down leaf for cooking on. Wrapping a block of ice cream in newspaper to try and stop it melting before tea time.
Ooh, greyduster! We had someone from the water board doing just that recently. The only reason I know is that they couldn't find the fire hydrant on our bit of lane and I had to show them where it was. I'd never seen this "listening for leaks" done before, and perhaps may never again.
It reminded me of my siblings and me putting our ears to the local train track to feel/hear the rumble of a train ?
