The Kindness of Strangers

I can think of several examples.
The first was ages ago, when I was out in the car with 3 young children, and we got a flat tyre. A group of Hell's Angels types drove up, I was scared at first, but they changed the wheel and saw us off.
Here in France, I've found that french people are very kind when you have some kind of accident , or other problem. The kind of thing that in the UK people wouldn't intervene, because of fear of legal consequences.
The last one - van door wouldn't shut, stopped en route and a kind old man pulled in behind me and eventually fixed it shut temporarily, even though we were stopped in a dangerous position. Gave him a kiss!

My DGS and I were on the wrong side of the subway, so he scooted under the barrier, ( he's 6). "Come on Granny " he said, so I slid under and was just about to get up when a very kind lady rushed up and offered me help. She assumed that I had fallen. I had to explain to her that I was okay and had only slid under the barrier to join the 6 he old who wouldn't come back. We laughed and went our separate ways.

I still remember with thanks the young man in North London who insisted upon giving me his umbrella one stormy day a year ago. It was just after Christmas and I probably looked a bit downmarket in a (MUJI) plastic mac. He couldn't know that I dislike and can't really cope with umbrellas! It was the thought that counted!

ggmarion I personally think that they treated you so kindly and were so concerned about you. It was definitely above and beyond the call of duty. Luckily your husband was at home and not driving around looking for you but it is still very distressing.

TBH I find so many instances of kindness that I would not know where to start! I really do think that people are mostly good.

I am remembering how people I had never met before helped me. We went shopping in our nearest town (25 miles away) and I nipped into a shop whilst DH went to get petrol saying he would pick me up where he dropped me off. I waited and waited. It started to rain he doesn't carry mobile and my battery was flat. After an hour I went into a local florist to ask where I might get a taxi - the bus only goes twice a day. They offered to ring a taxi firm and when I told them where I wanted to go they were horrified at the cost. They could see I was upset and asked what had happened and when I told them took complete charge. Sat me down with a cup of tea whilst one of them went to the petrol station to see if anything had happened there and drove around looking for a car that matched ours with registration number. They then said they would take me home - no argument. I asked to ring home just to check and hubby answered. Said he couldn't remember where he had dropped me off so went home! That was the first proof of how badly his memory was deteriorating. I gave him specific directions and he came back for me. Has anyone else experienced this level of kindness and caring from complete strangers?
