The TESCO advert was sad, but well done.
This year of our own choice, we decided to get away on our own, a lovely Christmas in Cornwall, but I did miss my adult children and grandchildren and they somehow managed on their own, so this could be the start of something! I am writing this after Christmas as we didnt have Internet access, which was bliss, I must add. Hope everyone had a lovely Christmas xx

Ps that means that 2 more children will be fed at school for a full year.

DS and DD decided to make a donation to my favourite charity. Mary's Meals ask for the amount spent on an average Christmas dinner (£15) and for each donation set a place at their virtual table.
When DS opened his laptop to show me, I was delighted and teary when I saw on the plate the names of my late parents.
Very much appreciated.

Page 2 ladies }}}Hugs{{{ and flowers

Bringing tears to my eyes all your lovely posts. My dad died just before Xmas and I remember looking out of the window at the snow, first thing in the morning, really wanting to phone him to say "It's snowing dad!, look out the window" same scenario with my precious little Granddaughter the first year I was 'cut out' broke my heart! And yes, kindness can make you tear-up too tchconfused
Really must leave for work, I will read page 3 when I get back.

Hugs and my thoughts to all who need them. Sorry for anyone feeling alone.
Glad to be alive, for opportunities to show humanity whether to family, friend or passing stranger.
Of course we remember those who have passed on, a friend gone at 18 or at 49, far too soon. A parent who could have been so much better understood and loved. Uncomplaining unmarried aunt who quietly did so much for others and never mentioned loneliness.
We must look to the future, our own and those of others, especially the precious grandchildren, whatever their ages, situations or attitudes. Blink back the tears and on we go, never knowing for sure what a new day may bring. Love and hope to all.

'We hold more in common than that what divides us.'?

Granmary I do sympathise.
I was reasonably ok yesterday with my sister and her partner here, but today I have been alone and realised that I have not heard anything from any of my three older grandsons this Christmas....my family is fractured since my daughter died early last year and nothing seems to be improving...

Granmary18 Mon 26-Dec-16 17:37:18

Without going in to details, I feel like my family is falling apart ...despite us all being together yesterday ...I thought that things were beginning to improve but yesterday showed that the opposite is the case .....so I seem to be weeping off and on since they went to their respective homes last night! Carols make me worse , remembering happier times, including with those no longer with us!

Thanks Sue and Kitty for your prayers and thoughts respectively. Pretty tough day saying goodbye, but feel pleased we did it.

Good to have GN to express my feelings without burdening the family who are all struggling in their own ways.

This is a useful thread. flowers

Well yesterday we sat alone, my 2nd husband and i. He has mouth cancer and not able to eat much. But he has a wonderful spirit. He lives on soft foods so i did not much cooking for myself for xmas. Today i was at my younger daughters and my eldest daughter ,partner and Son and wife all had brunch and exchanged presents.

Mumsy Mon 26-Dec-16 13:43:44

I know I shouldnt have done but curiosity got the better of me, I just looked at my older grandaughters facebook page and there they all were a happy xmas selfie of my estranged family ?

Rinouchka Mon 26-Dec-16 12:24:13

Hugs to all of you, especially those for whom this time of year is diffiicult. You are in my thoughts.

Hugs to all of you who have lost loved ones or are estranged from family. My youngest son is in NZ and sent me a message yesterday to say it had been a strange emotional day for him - happy with his two small children yet sad remembering past years and missing everyone here. We did FaceTime last night and saw the little ones which was lovely. I had an accident yesterday and ended up in A&E - I felt quite emotional as my other son and his family had come to us for the day (they live 2 hours away) and we ended up leaving them sat at home on their own. Felt so bad we came away from the hospital before I was seen to be with them.

Mildred Mon 26-Dec-16 07:56:20

Mick big hug.

I to have been feeling down this year, having lost my father last March , and last Christmas with him being bed ridden took the pleasure out of Christmas then, living alone as well in my flat in a Anchor home I reflect back quite easy.

It is interesting to read posts from English grandparents whose grandkids are in Australia. I am an Australian grandmother whose three grandkids (my only grandkids) will be moving to England at the beginning of March. Yesterday could well have been the last Christmas I will spend with them, and it is a very sad thought that can bring me to tears. But I have two more months to spend with them and will create as many happy memories as I can to see me through.
Mumsy, I feel particularly sad for you as estrangement is worse than mere geographical separation. I was temporarily estranged from my grandkids for two months before Christmas last year (my daughter-in-law is Chinese and from time to time does a passive aggressive thing which may involve not letting me see the kids). I felt as if I had died inside. So my heart goes out to you.

Bellanonna Mon 26-Dec-16 00:35:54

Ana ? And everyone who has felt sad today. I think merry is just an older word as in "God rest ye...". I'm happy to use either. This has been quite an emotional thread to read but it's been good to see so many positive comments on here.

kittylester Sun 25-Dec-16 21:42:51

Enjoy your bag Ann - you deserve it! I hope your day was no worse than you hoped! wine

Ana - a gentle hug.

Kate, I don't pray but will think of you and your family.

Nellie, I hope your Christmas has passed off as happily as you would wish. (((Hug)))

To all of you who are sad. flowers

Charleygirl Sun 25-Dec-16 21:42:34

that sounds like a very good personal gift to yourself ann. At least the day is almost over now.

What ifs are wasted you have to make the best of what you have.
A peaceful night to you also.

annsixty Sun 25-Dec-16 21:15:07

To all of you, kindest thoughts and to * nankate* prayers. They are a great comfort.
My day has been fine, I knew what to expect and it lived up to it.
I have memories of years past but don't try to replicate that, it is a wasted effort.
I bought myself a Radley bag online from John Lewis and I have just opened it in the privacy of my bedroom and it is lovely so I am a happy bunny.
A peaceful night to you all.
