Nativity play invite

I have a question about grandparents being invited to their grandchildrens nativity play. I have 4 grandchildren and with the elder 3 (now teenagers) was always included in the excitement of the nativity play and invited to watch. With the youngest GD , with a different DS I was told I could watch the DVD and told something very vague about there was not much room in the hall. DGD is in a small reception class . I am so disappointed I was wondering if things have changed and there are restrictions on invites to school Christmas plays nowadays .

My grandson was only allowed two adults at his Nativity. His parents went, so we missed it.

Raemac - At least you were able to watch the DVD. A lot of schools won't now allow them to be made of nativity plays or indeed any school events. A real shame as I know tickets have to be restricted because of the size of many school halls.

Anya - didn't mean trite, I meant right.

Anya your view is so funny and trite - much more amusing than anything you'd see in a school Christmas production.

I hav sometimes been a bit resentful if the 'other' grandparents have been but not us. However, I have never head of and dont understand the remark about diluting DiLs experience!!

I love to go but its rarely possible due to space restrictions and also thy are all a long way away and the plays are often when we are busy so cant go even if invited. W e are lucky in thet we are usually invited if there are tickets to spare. Different schools have different regulations - last year one DiL bought th 'official' video and showed it to us at christmas (it went on for ever before a fleeting appearance of GS!) - th other DiL did ask us but we couldnt go and no videoing was allowed. It seems they ask parents and if even one objects no-one can film.
However i love going to local primary school show where DH is a governor even though I dont know the children.
Apart from playing the usual characters , over the years our own children or grandchildren have been mice, cows, stars, snowflakes, presents and even a spider!

Love going to these productions - highlight of my year!

I am surprised at the comments about taking pictures and having videos though. There seems to be a tight ruling about 'vulnerable' children not being photographed in the schools here. Having said that there's always a lot of photos of the plays in the local paper so don't know how they can do that.

I have two GS one in nursery and his nativity had no restrictions so I was able to go with my DH. The older one 7 years however has only ever had one performance and only ever 2 tickets and his mum always takes her mum so I have always missed out! Going to the nursery nativity was wonderful so my DH made the most of it.

Many grandparents are involved in the DGCs lives with walking them to school, babysitting, helping out at school fairs etc etc. So it is really hard not to be able to see their Christmas production. Some schools invite GPs and I understand the pressure for places but I find it hard watching other people's GCs (I am a Governor at a Special School) when I long to see my own. GCs love it if you are there ~ if you are not they think you can't be bothered. Decided to 'gate crash' this year as it was at a big church and then got a very last minute invitation!

GNHQ were kind enough to delete this at my request as I had second thoughts about the picture, so I am reposting sans pic.
I was delighted to get an invitation to DGSs' Nativity play, somehow as both were in it, one in Reception and one in Y2, DD got 2 pairs of tickets sent home. She returned one, so hopefully another Granny was as thrilled as I was. DGS1 was Joseph and took it very seriously, DGS 2 was a "star" like the rest of Reception and while he did what he had to do because his teacher had told him, his face said "I know I look like a big girl's blouse in this outfit, but if I pull my star down over my face perhaps nobody will recognise me"
Once it was over and he could take his star headdress off, he was perfectly happy.
I blubbed my way through Little Donkey, and Away in a Manger of course!

So is anyone else kept away from these events even if tickets are available because their presence is seen as "diluting" the experience for DiL?

I missed both DGC1 and 2's preschool Nativity debuts this year sad One was a Wise Man and wore the crown well by all accounts, but we were minding DGS3 that day so couldn't go. And DGS2 was in a limited ticket performance, so again we couldn't go. It seems we missed nothing as he and the other nine Christmas Trees spent the whole performance on the floor in front of the stage where only the people on the front row could see them. Of course his mum and dad told him how well he'd done, even though they didn't even know where he was!

Anya,spot on.

Anya grin my feelings exactly . My GCs school have limited it to 2 invites per child thank goodness so I will not be required to go . I love my GCs but never enjoyed these school productions even when mine were little .

At DGS1's school there is always limited space for any of their plays. They normall do two or three performances, but with two tickets per performance we have to do a lot of juggling if DD, SIL, GS2 and I all want a chance to see it.

No Nativity play here at school but they had a whole day of St Nicolas celebrations earlier this month. The school also all went for one morning to the local Catholic Church, not sure what happened there as DD had kept DGS off with a bad cough. He goes to a semi-private Catholic school and part of the contract with the school is that children must attend 2 special services a year. This includes children of all denominations, there are plenty of other schools if this doesn't suit.
Tomorrow is the Sunday School nativity play, DGS is a Shepherd, our sister Church is in Ghana so I have made his tunic from Ghanaian fabric and his head covering from a Saltire.
Sunday school party this afternoon so a busy weekend for DGS and I.

Only two tickets available at my dgd's school so I couldn't see her looking angelic! ?

grannyqueenie Sat 17-Dec-16 10:01:11

Having just watched a bit of the DVD of my granddaughters school performance I think I've had a lucky escape. It seemed to be a combination of Frozen and Macbeth and was like watching paint dry!! Did catch just a glimpse of my two lovelies though!!

I shall never forget DD's first school Christingle in the local church. Fortunately her hair was in plaits not down her back as her best friend Miranda got too close behind her with her candle and singed DD's hair, frizzling it all up the parting on the back,of her head. Oh how we all laughed it off, DD was fine and Miranda stayed her best friend until we moved away.
But with hindsight - 5/6 year olds, candles? ???

durhamjen Fri 16-Dec-16 23:13:14

No tickets to my granddaughter's nativity. It was in the church anyway. Three of us went. The church was packed. A very jazzy nativity, with most of the kids dancing away in their pews, excellent to watch and listen to. Year six take the main parts and year three do the Christingle.

Jalima Fri 16-Dec-16 23:04:28

and it wasn't by ticket, we just went.

Jalima Fri 16-Dec-16 23:03:33

I suppose we're lucky as the school has less than 100 pupils and the village hall is quite large - with proper chairs!

Granmary18 Fri 16-Dec-16 21:02:45

I haven't heard of tickets being just for parents before.mThat is a new one.

rosesarered Fri 16-Dec-16 20:34:22

Nope ( not us) as tickets are just for parents (2 tickets only.)So even had we wanted to go, we couldn't have.

Granmary18 Fri 16-Dec-16 20:29:07

Oh well, so noone else is excluded then even when tickets are available! Plenty seem to be enjoying them!
