Dunkirk

Last year I went with oldest son and family to Bletchley Park. It's really worth a visit.
When you first walk in the atmosphere that they've created is so realistic, I had to turn back and go outside, I was crying so much.
How these men lived through it I'll never know.

This is why these films should be shown, so few to relate the horrors now

Dad didn't talk much about the war until he got older - Mum said he saw too many horrors as they all did. He did tall us that he was standing on the pier waiting in line to get on the ship with his pal - there was one place left and his pal wouldn't get on without Dad so they stayed together and got on the next one. The crew gave them blankets and cigarettes once on board - the ship they didn't get on was one which was hit. It's a wonder any of them went on to lead normal lives. My FIL was also a war veteran and he didn't say too much either until the later years. My husband and sons took him down to the tank museum in Bovington shortly before he died. All the visitors were gathered round him listening to him talk about driving the tanks - it will always be a special memory for my husband.

Willow500 I'm not surprised you well-up. I found out recently that my Dad was in one of the off-shore communication ships at the time, and I remember so much about those days in other ways that it doesn't take much to make my eyes fill up.
The rescue of your Dad was even more poignant.
I don't know if it helps to see those terrible times again. Although thank God many got through them, as did we.

It's not something that I would want to watch as a film, although have read a couple of good non fiction books on it.

When you watch you may find you are so thankful your father was rescued this will make the horrors easier to watch?
