It's not our day!

We have a massive Austrian freestanding wood burner in our living room based on a semicircular 12mm glass plinth that sticks out about 18" from the base of the stove. Whilst clearing out the grate I dropped the poker, point down, on the glass and it smashed with the most amazing noise. The safety glass then continued to shatter for the next 5 minutes or more - we could hear it crackling. We now have the challenge of removing this mass of shattered glass, making sure we do not pull any from underneath the stove or it will cease to be aligned with the chimney.

We are not doing too badly, but must make sure there are no glass fragments anywhere in the room as DGS is coming tomorrow. It is a mammoth task - there is glass everywhere.

I have rung our chap and he says that we can safely continue to use the stove without its glass plinth. Whew - it is enormous and having to get it out and start again would be a massive undertaking.

So......not our day.

What a mess ! Vacuum after you have found the most of it then damp mop . It is amazing how far the shards go ! Our logburner is on a slate hearth which now has several cracks due to dropping the poker too , but no shards

Hubby accidently dropped a cup, it hit our fire as it fell,the glass front exploded and a million splinters
of glass went everywhere, after an hour of vacuuming we could still see tiny pieces in the carpet.

Good luck with removing all the pieces of glass Luckygirl - what a nightmare for you.

Reminds me of the time dh and me took down a dangerous old greenhouse. It was nerve wracking as we painstakingly removed each pane, wrapped it in newspaper carried it through the house and placed it in the skip. While it was going on a shifty looking character came to the front door offering to help and before I knew it he was inside. I asked him to leave saying he wasn't insured and we couldn't take the risk of him hurting himself. We had propped a door open with a lump hammer to prevent it slamming in our faces while we were carrying panes of glass. A short time afterwards we realised that the "character" had nicked the lump hammer.

I've had a glass front door and a glass porch door shatter. It's nerve wracking. Remember don't kneel down and wear gloves when removing the glass pieces.

If it's safety glass it should not splinter - but I would sweep, vacuum then mop with a damp mop as suggested by aggie - and wear shoes, make sure that DGS keeps his shoes on too.

We are quite the experts at clearing up broken glass in this house, but never a glass plinth!
