Thank you, thank you for your good wishes - we got the dog and he is just perfect - the best we've seen. He glued himself to my side and followed me around to such an extent that the kennel assistant joked he must have known me in a previous life. [Does ecstatic happy dance.]
I have to go back to meet him again tomorrow with The Wonderful Man and show our I.D., then we need a visit to check that we have a suitable home for him, then the vet has to give the dog the all clear......and then, finally, we can bring him home. And when we do I shall post a photo of him. 
I was very saddened to hear the kennel assistant say that at this time of year they get a lot of old dogs handed in because people want to replace them with a new puppy for Christmas. Then in March there's a huge spike in calls from people who bought a dog for Christmas and want to get rid of it because they're too much work!
