It's only 4th December and already we have received 4 cards, 5 if you count the one from a well known coach company.
What is it with these people confused

LilyBlue Mon 05-Dec-16 11:23:28

I received my first Christmas card this year on November 21st.
Their cards usually arrive on December 1st.
I haven't started writing any of mine yet.

Greyduster Mon 05-Dec-16 11:20:37

I am going to do mine today, but the fact that the postage will cost me twice as much as the cards have cost is not sitting well with me.....

MissAdventure Mon 05-Dec-16 11:13:29

I don't send cards, and its such a relief. Everyone who knows me knows I wish them a happy Christmas.

My gran used to send all cards in June or Jan for the entire family birthdays / anniversaries and Christmas..........just to keep on top of things

What started out as a joke has now turned in to a tradition for my son and his long time friend from school. They send each other the same two cards alternating every Christmas. They are getting a bit tatty now but it is just one way of keeping in touch. They include a note inside of what they have been getting up to. I think he would be quite sad if it didn't arrive one Christmas. Just a bit of fun.

My OH has been writing cards since October! He says it is less stressful that way. He doesn't send them until the week before Christmas though.

We have had 5 already, two from abroad from people we have known for years. They always include a photograph of the children so we can see how they have grown.

I have thought about writing my cards every day for about two weeks.

I think that sending & receiving cards is one tiny bit of glue that keeps people connected & you never know if it is a spark that reignites a stronger connection at some time - even if only to let their relatives know who to contact when they die. I now tend to send some when I receive so I can reply to any news. Some early senders are just anxious, elderly, scared they will receive none - or like to spread the load for postal workers. They warn me to start thinking about Xmas. So more things to get bothered about.

I buy mine just after christmas and write one for evryone I take down, just leave the addresses blank in case people move through the year ,they're put in the box with the christmas tree decorations and completed when the tree goes up ,usually posted the first week December

GrammaH Mon 05-Dec-16 09:46:32

3 so far. I usually write mine 2 Sundays before Christmas, sitting at the dining table with a bottle of prosecco to help me as it's not a task I enjoy but we have DS, DDIL & DGS lunching that Sunday as they're away for Christmas. It's quite put me out! I don't know when I'll get the cards done but hopefully everyone will receive them in time for Christmas

'Got our first on on Saturday and the dog ate it. 'Think it was from my cousin as far as I could decipher from the few spitty remnants on the mat.

Just one so far, from an elderly relative in Canada and I've posted hers too.

Plan to write and post the rest later this week. I do send electronic ones to overseas friends and relatives now to save on the very expensive postage ( except for the elderly Canadian lady already mentioned)

Mid December feels about right for them to begin arriving.

I have had two cards one of which was from friends who have moved home from abroad and who wanted t re-establish contact.

I have written, added the dreaded newsletter and stamped my cards and will post them on the Sunday nearest the 10th December. My rule for cards is that they have to be classical art and religious and they have to be on good card not floppy paper. Anything less isn't worth the eleven bob it now costs to post second class.

I absolutely love sending and receiving cards at Christmas. The post adds a thrill to the day.

5 up to now. Must get a move on with mine.

Witzend Mon 05-Dec-16 09:05:12

None yet, which is unusual.
We send a lot, since many friends are far-flung. I had posted all my overseas cards by 30th Nov, and all the UK ones by 2nd Dec. One job out of the way - we will be a very big family party this year in a rental far from home so I have plenty of other stuff to do and think of, plus other family visiting in a few days.

I know two couples who have stopped sending cards, which I can well understand if money is tight. However these people are all very comfortably off so I suspect they just CBA. One of them said they would be donating the money to charity instead, fair enough, but these are the sort of people who could easily do both and not even miss it. Still, their choice.
Dh hates doing the relatively few he HAS to do, and puts it off as long as possible, so I suspect there's a bit of that involved.

BBbevan Mon 05-Dec-16 07:27:55

None yet, but I have sent all our cards. We have moved recently and I wanted to tell everyone

Pigglywiggly Mon 05-Dec-16 06:40:59

We had one in November from some neighbours, but turns out they have gone on a cruise so we're sending cards early.
We do send cards to neighbours because other people do it and it would seem churlish not to. I bought 30 cards on Saturday, but hope to have some left for next year wink

Izabella Mon 05-Dec-16 04:47:36

We only do e-cards and have finally got everyone to agree not to send us any actual cards in return. We give a donation to Guide Dogs instead which I believe is of far more use. My mum was blind hence the choice of charity.

Grandma2213 Mon 05-Dec-16 01:41:01

I have received one from a friend who lives abroad and who is now spending the Christmas season locally, about 5 minutes away from me. What?!!

The cards that I send are still in the loft (bought in the sales last year). I also write a newsy letter personalised and email it to younger friends who appreciate it more than ungreen Christmas cards. I also post a Christmas and New Year message at the appropriate time on Facebook.

Close family and friends who I see all the time do not receive cards but I make a donation to a local charity.

Does that cover all tastes? If not - any other suggestions?

goldengirl Sun 04-Dec-16 20:56:35

4 so far. I've just been to post some of mine [all written but I've run out of stamps!!!]

ninathenana Sun 04-Dec-16 18:32:03

Rinouchka yes we still send to neighbours that we will see over the season. H and I exchange cards. A tradition I picked up from mum n dad. I don't give to D or S as they are living here. Mum n dad exchanged theirs on Christmas morning but H and I give ours in the lead up.
I like receiving cards. I don't know anyone who only sends e-cards or texted greetings thankfully.

Willow500 Sun 04-Dec-16 16:54:16

One from my son and family which they brought up last week with the rest of the family's cards - I haven't opened it yet - too much mess going on in the house. Still not written any yet either blush

Jalima Sun 04-Dec-16 16:36:14

I think so

vampirequeen Sun 04-Dec-16 16:35:26

Isn't it nice that people remembered you and thought enough of you to send you a card? Does it matter that they posted early?

Jalima Sun 04-Dec-16 16:27:44

I haven't had one from the garage or from the travel insurer yet ...

LadyGracie Sun 04-Dec-16 16:13:21

One from my hairdresser, I won't see her before Christmas. Today we had one from our local councillors with the dates of our Christmas bin collections inside. I wonder who pays for those?
