Don't want to completely hi-jack the 'Christmas in four words' thread so I've started this one. Feel free to shoot me down. I don't do flouncing.
Some time ago, the 'What does Gransnet mean to you?'thread developed into a 'Bring back jingl' campaign. Despite this, it has become clear that we are not entitled to an explanation as to why she is still shackled to the naughty step
We inhabit a goldfish bowl which must be respectable to the outside world looking in on an ageing cyber community. Old people are only expected to be curmudgeonly in books and TV nonsense. Manufactured threads about growing old disgracefully are perfectly acceptable so long as they fit the approved template which has been set by people who are NOT as old as we are.
All well and good until a situation causes a ding-dong. We must be ever mindful that Gransnet is a business relying on advertising revenue. Swearing is tolerated on Mumsnet because it's acceptable in the young and feisty whereas the 'one foot in the grave' club have to leave all that behind and remember our opinions don't really count any more.
The political threads are argumentative because that's politics. You can't put a straight jacket on a well informed if opiniated point of view which is as it should be. Folk who hide behind the sofa when all hell breaks loose should know better than to get caught in the cross-fire.
So....We're allowed to moan about Brexit, complain about our aches and pains and chat about telly dramas/adverts/music. We willingly offer support to complete strangers even though it often comes back to bite us. I'm not the only one who can spot a set-up. Above all, we must remain bland!
There were two members who railed against this. One is sadly no longer with us and the other has been kicked into touch for being too outspoken. Unsurprisingly, they rarely saw eye to eye but that's LIFE!
I'm off to put the joint in the oven. I might even start a thread about it.
Only joking!

It really does depend on how you "get" other Gnetters sometimes. I remember having a real laugh with Jbf over something. I took her reply as it was intended, in fun. A regular poster PM'd me that time to say don't take to heart what had been said. I hadn't, it was just a laugh. Hope that explains what I mean.
Could I also correct something I said earlier about mash not being thought provoking. How wrong was I! I have thought of little else for hours.
Another example of how people react to others' comments.
I can understand why you felt hurt, annsixty, but when feelings are running high, I'd have thought you'd have known jingl well enough to know it was said in the heat of the moment.
I have said before and I reiterate that I appreciate how people feel but when you have been told to .... off when you dared to support another poster your view tends to be slanted.
I'm afraid I've lost the thread of the thread what I meant Jamila in my first reply was to the suggestion that the advertisers only wanted gransnet to be bland. I was trying to say that it's my age group who in my opinion have the confidence to be feisty and make their sure their opinions are heard loud and clear. I obviously didn't put it very well.
I remember when she laid flowers on our behalf in Nice after the atrocity there on Bastille Day.
I think she was someone who felt passionately and said what she thought.
merlot, you're right. jingl often gave support when others didn't recognise the need.
She gave much more than she gets credit for and it's sad that so many seem to feel virtuous about criticising her style of posting.
I look upon Gransnet as the equivalent of chatting to neighbours. Some talk about their children or grandchildren, some about what is going on in the street, some about national politics and some about international news. Sometimes we discuss what we are cooking tonight, sometimes recount something that made us laugh, sometimes share a sadness.
There are some neighbours I would cross the road to speak to, some I would cross the road to avoid. We don't always agree, and we don't always like what we hear. I don't expect them all to be identical clones and to be interested in the same things, or to all be robust in their arguments or sensitive to anything that appears critical.
Vive la difference.
I often disagreed with jingl and sometimes felt her posts were a little OTT, however, as I said before, we are all adults haven't we all had to deal with abrasive or blunt people in our lives. As someone once said "I may disagree with what you say but will defend your right to say it". We are surely past the age of needing to be censored.
"The seed is the Word of God. Those by the wayside are they that hear; then cometh the devil and taketh away the Word out of their hearts lest they should believe and be saved.
and those that aren't saintly ?
jingl often gave warm hearted and helpful advice to posters who asked for support.
Fallen by the wayside? I didn't realise we're all supposed to be saintly beings.
I'd suggest that the advertisers don't know their target audience very well if that's what they want.
morethan2 could we liken them to the Marks and Spencer of retail shopping then?
or to worry about those who still haven't mastered the art of creamy mash.
not sure I agree as I think the threads are very wide-ranging in their content (and I just posted on the mash thread and I would have been just as interested in a thread on MASH if there had been one around then) and many others. Sometimes it's helpful to have a bit of advice from someone with experience, other times it is interesting to read other people's points of view on controversial issues even if we would never agree.
Although I agree that many threads which could be much more interesting often end up in 'slagging off' of people's choice of newspaper, people's views on politicians and the debate descends to a personal level which is not in the least constructive.
If someone is having family problems and don't know which way to turn, don't want to approach anyone in authority, sometimes it would seem to be helpful to get a range of views from people who may have experienced the same, or just have some sensible advice to offer and are not emotionally involved.
Not everyone wants or needs a high-level philosophical discussion, some people just want a chat or some reassurance.
What happened to the Philosophy Thread btw?
I was with jingl and her cry of despair about Aleppo.
And I can also agree that the White Helmets and other people are doing a wonderful, courageous job.
I was relating it to Anya's post about 'first world problems' kitty - I think several posts crossed further up!
I don't see have tvs as problem? Now I'm completely
And if she does we'll shift her into the conservatory and leave her there.
I quite like the conservatory trisher provided the heat is on, there is a glass or two of
and I can escape the hurly burly and let the younger ones get down on the floor with the DGC I can have an hour or two of peace
Who looks for excitement on GN anyway? I come here merely to shoot the breeze.
Sometimes her posts(JBF) were rude and hurtful. I agree she spiced things up but if we hurt someone unnecessarily on a forum that is uncalled for and unkind. Life is often difficult enough and sometimes people are very brave opening up about their problems and deserve a better response.
Really? I don't remember it that way at all...
I can cope with "excellent"!! - and "worthy" (at a pinch)
The "outspokenness" of the member who has fallen by the wayside was systematic and dedicated goading of HQ - she was clearly enjoying it and that is fine if that is what turns her on! But it did interfere with the threads and sabotaged them on several occasions. Pretty darned irritating - but that was the general idea - result!
Which definition?
Luckygirl I thought your post was worthy!
Cake? Where?!
Oh, sorry - I see you said you had a reason.
anya and you're over-egging the meaning of the word "excellent" cake.
Think Anya meant the tv question, kitty...
