wanders off for a reality check
Professor Jason Arday - plagiarism etc
Don't want to completely hi-jack the 'Christmas in four words' thread so I've started this one. Feel free to shoot me down. I don't do flouncing.
Some time ago, the 'What does Gransnet mean to you?'thread developed into a 'Bring back jingl' campaign. Despite this, it has become clear that we are not entitled to an explanation as to why she is still shackled to the naughty step
We inhabit a goldfish bowl which must be respectable to the outside world looking in on an ageing cyber community. Old people are only expected to be curmudgeonly in books and TV nonsense. Manufactured threads about growing old disgracefully are perfectly acceptable so long as they fit the approved template which has been set by people who are NOT as old as we are.
All well and good until a situation causes a ding-dong. We must be ever mindful that Gransnet is a business relying on advertising revenue. Swearing is tolerated on Mumsnet because it's acceptable in the young and feisty whereas the 'one foot in the grave' club have to leave all that behind and remember our opinions don't really count any more.
The political threads are argumentative because that's politics. You can't put a straight jacket on a well informed if opiniated point of view which is as it should be. Folk who hide behind the sofa when all hell breaks loose should know better than to get caught in the cross-fire.
So....We're allowed to moan about Brexit, complain about our aches and pains and chat about telly dramas/adverts/music. We willingly offer support to complete strangers even though it often comes back to bite us. I'm not the only one who can spot a set-up. Above all, we must remain bland!
There were two members who railed against this. One is sadly no longer with us and the other has been kicked into touch for being too outspoken. Unsurprisingly, they rarely saw eye to eye but that's LIFE!
I'm off to put the joint in the oven. I might even start a thread about it.
Only joking!
wanders off for a reality check
sunseeker that would be open to abuse as campaigns could be mounted by unscrupulous people using secret FB pages to get at a poster they don't like!
You can tell I read too many teen-fantasy books can't you?
Of course mature and sensible women would not resort to such lengths to get someone banned. I'm just rambling as usual.
If a poster is reported a certain number of times then GNHQ could perhaps open a voting thread as to whether that poster should be banned. (Probably if this happened no poster would ever be banned!)
No Christinefrance that is provocative (which I can deal with) but untrue, which I have to refute.
I am not a particular fan of jingl and I can see why she might upset some people. In fact I've had a few spats with her myself. But she could be funny and clever and supportive too.
My point was simply there are far worse posting on GN and because they manage to slip craftily under the guidelines they cause more chaos than she ever did.
Time for me to leave this thread, the acolytes are taking over.
must sit on hands
Firstly, if there's an amnesty, there's also a list.
Secondly, we don't know whether anyone on the list actually gives a fiddler's fart about having been banned!
Thanks Tricia
Picking up on a couple of points made by Bags and Pen of course we don't always agree with others. It wouldn't be human nature if we didn't. Even those we normally find we have much in common with.
But, even though this has been said time and time again it's worth repeating, there are some whose first response is to make personal attacks. Of course we can all get heated now and then, but I'm talking about those few posters to whom it is a first response. These poster then are the first to press the report button when someone retaliates in kind.
It's easy to see what's happened by following the thread through to the inevitable deletion and just as easy to work out who hit the report button. Sometimes it's something more sinister at work!
Now I'm not sure exactly what happened jingl but I suspect she fell into, (or was lured into?) a trap. She had been relatively muzzled well behaved since her last ban (2 years ago?) so had obviously been trying hard. But, there are far worst posters on GN, who are very crafty about not actually breaking guidelines and manage to cause far more upset and nastiness than ever jingl did.
So in that way, no, she doesn't deserve a life time ban. I hope GNHQ would consider an amnesty at this time of year.
Safe to come out again kittylester! I totally echo what janeainswiorth has said as would we all.
Without knowing what exactly has led to posters being "barred" for life (if that is indeed the case) there have been several I can think of who may have slung their hook of their own accord or may have been politely shown the door. Who other than GNHQ is to know?
So if the plea is to bring back Jingl, can we expect to see tcherry, paulaB, soontobe/obieone among others any day now and last but not least FRANK reporting from Bums N Tums with his faithful mutt Andy?
Ana 're your post yesterday at 21:17 and all the other people having a pop at my example of another poster: it's about fairness and equality.
Anyway, I used to be a forum moderator and forum administrator (in a previous working life), and people got banned, and no ban was ever overturned.
The tail cannot wag the dog.
Yes Bags but in the context of this thread, the 'not always agreeing' is being used to qualify a statement that the poster thought JBF was Generally A Good Thing And Should Be Reinstated, or something similar, so that the agreeing bit wasn't the main point they were making, if you see what I mean.
#bernardwoolleymoment
Just browsing through this thread, and others like it on previous occasions, it strikes me as odd that people mention that they "don't always agree with" someone. Why does it strike me as odd? Because I don't think I've ever known anyone, not a single person, not even one of my best friends, with whom I "always agree". I'd think it really weird if I ever found that I always agreed with someone else. Spooky, even.
Thank you jane.
I wasn't going to post on this thread because I have no feelings either way about JBF, however I would just like to say to shanma that you have picked the wrong person to have a go at when you picked kittylester.
I've never seen her 'delight in making negative comments' about anyone.
Lovely thought Christinefrance but isn't a prerequisite of sainthood that one needs to have expired? Could be wrong.
@ Anya - sorry, I forgot you've been in a lot of pain lately.
Take care.
Day 6 -good post. I agree with you wholeheartedly. I don't think I will ever feel or act like a " Grannie". We are the generation that changed "aging" for the better.
Gransnet seems like heaven after an evening on Twitter ! Nobody is obliged to post or read or respond to anything; it's a commercial set up with rules. Personally I've learnt lots about the human condition from reading posts, if I wanted for example, more intellectually stimulating or robust debate then I could choose other places to post. I don't know the ins and outs of the the exclusion of jings so I can't comment on that but if I felt patronised or force fed Horlicks by the company I would probably consider an alternative. I think there's a whole lot to be said for fabulous mashed potatoes !
Kittylester I don't expect GN to run according to my guidelines, but may be nice to have a suggestion acknowledged at least. I might have known though that you would pick holes in my post. Maybe I did something to you in a former life because you seem to delight in making negative comments to just about everything I say.
That's ok, but may be better if you ignore me in the future. This is where my suggested button would come in handy. I could press it and never have to see you pop up again
I think that it does go on IP address and so they would notice, if they were in the lookout.
I can't see why anyone needs to be banned, unless they are deliberately trolling and offensive.
We also never get to be told who is banned so that we can object.
I agree that it is very bland- I haven't bothered to sign in for ages.
I don't think you can do that as they have your IP address
Is that right - perhaps someone more computer savvy can correct me if needed.
If Jing is banned what's to stop her signing up under another name? She might be still with us and we have no idea! Come on Jing, make yourself known to us. We won't tell gransnet!
Yes cherrytree I know she came back. I'll say no more.
I had not particular issues with JBF. I did not necessarily agree with all she posted but I also did not see all the thread that seems to have caused this apparent lifetime ban.
None of us are more special than any other GNer and if we break the terms and conditions that we agreed to comply with when we joined then admin have to implement the consequences.
We are all able to start threads so don't moan if there are none you like...start one and ignore the ones you consider bland! Some posters tend to respond to 'issues' with personal comments rather than debating the points being made. This may make some hold back from starting 'interesting' threads too as they can so quickly deteriorate into tit for tat personal slurs!
Soon did come back.
She.doesn't seem to be posting at the moment.
Ana I'm not aware that on her return she had upset anyone
On a number of occasions JBF had actually stood up for her
GN, like RL is what we make it. Some of us want to while away time discussing tv, DiL etc. Those of us who don't can start our own threads. I have seen some well informed debates on GN that were definitely not bland.
Well said LuckyGirl, I agree with every word. None of us surely would flinch at a swear word used for humour or emphasis, and most of us enjoy a forceful debate/argument - unless it turns personally spiteful.
However, Merlot raises an interesting thought. Perhaps GN, and MN, and RL are comparatively bland. We grew up in a world with different standards. Now we have learned, especially in a public forum, and with potentially vulnerable strangers, to be more thoughtful about the language we use, more respectful of people's feelings. And while that is only right, it might seem bland and restrictive. Perhaps all social graces and good manners rob us of a little excitement and colour?
