Don't want to completely hi-jack the 'Christmas in four words' thread so I've started this one. Feel free to shoot me down. I don't do flouncing. grin

Some time ago, the 'What does Gransnet mean to you?'thread developed into a 'Bring back jingl' campaign. Despite this, it has become clear that we are not entitled to an explanation as to why she is still shackled to the naughty step

We inhabit a goldfish bowl which must be respectable to the outside world looking in on an ageing cyber community. Old people are only expected to be curmudgeonly in books and TV nonsense. Manufactured threads about growing old disgracefully are perfectly acceptable so long as they fit the approved template which has been set by people who are NOT as old as we are.

All well and good until a situation causes a ding-dong. We must be ever mindful that Gransnet is a business relying on advertising revenue. Swearing is tolerated on Mumsnet because it's acceptable in the young and feisty whereas the 'one foot in the grave' club have to leave all that behind and remember our opinions don't really count any more.

The political threads are argumentative because that's politics. You can't put a straight jacket on a well informed if opiniated point of view which is as it should be. Folk who hide behind the sofa when all hell breaks loose should know better than to get caught in the cross-fire.

So....We're allowed to moan about Brexit, complain about our aches and pains and chat about telly dramas/adverts/music. We willingly offer support to complete strangers even though it often comes back to bite us. I'm not the only one who can spot a set-up. Above all, we must remain bland!

There were two members who railed against this. One is sadly no longer with us and the other has been kicked into touch for being too outspoken. Unsurprisingly, they rarely saw eye to eye but that's LIFE!

I'm off to put the joint in the oven. I might even start a thread about it. hmm

Only joking!

I only got as far a merengue....mmmmmmmmm meringue.....................

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 28-Nov-16 11:50:54

One last clarification...

Drinking to solve problems is clearly never the answer.

As it happens I don't actually like wine (unless it's mulled and then absolutely not at this time of day)

My personal preference for drowning any sorrows and stresses is Zumba but it's not necessarily practical in an office situation (or a good look to be merengueing through the desks). So I will await the next class and give it all I've got.

trisher Mon 28-Nov-16 11:44:23

jane oh you are probably right- just thinking there seems to be a concept of 'them' and 'us' and the only way I know of solving this is for the 'them' to become a lot more open and transparent. Otherwise once this is established things tend to get worse.

Gransnet is not as interesting as it was in the early days. In the past I have seen many new posters chased off Gransnet by the same few posters, who unfortunately weren't banned. Maybe they should have been reported, though they had a few fans who jumped in and stuck up for them when they had been hounding some unfortunate poster. They certainly got away with a lot more than Jingles ever did.

Cari Thanks so much for your reply.
Can I suggest that it would make GN a much happier community if we could have a little more openness and in some ways this may even help with your job.
So if someone is under 'warning' would it be possible to share this with other members of GN ?(with that member's permission of course). This might result in a support network who will try to help the poster and encourage them not to enter into discussions where they are being baited.
And I am sorry but one of my posts was deleted- it was a rather off-colour joke about Jimmy Saville and I was told that this was because a moderator on duty at the weekend was inexperienced and aired on the side of caution. I accepted this as a reason. Can you not accept that sometimes GNHQ gets it wrong?
NanaandGrampy maybe I see a corner more clearly than you do?

Yes, there will be times when we don't get it right (not many grin) If we have a new member of staff they may well err on the side of caution at the start, but on these few occasions we have been more than happy to hold up our hands and explain.

We do post openly on the forums and we are happy for posters to share information with each other but it wouldn't be appropriate for us to do so.

janeainsworth Mon 28-Nov-16 11:30:01

Trisher maybe you didn't read too many of JBF's posts.
She made frequent reference to the fact that she was in the last chance saloon and towards the end of her tenure as Gransnet's favourite poster, started a thread actually baiting Cari to ban her.
Perhaps you could enlighten us as to what form of mentoring/ counselling/ support JBF might have responded to?
confused

CariGransnet (GNHQ) Mon 28-Nov-16 11:26:03

In case it wasn't clear - the comment about banning was generic and not referring to any specific poster. You will appreciate we can't go into any specifics on here.

And under the circumstances, yes, very good idea [wine}

Why isn't there a bottle emoticon when you need one???

wine too early? grin

NanaandGrampy Mon 28-Nov-16 11:10:13

Quite frankly Trisher did we read the same response from Cari . NOWHERE did I see Granny banished to the corner.... are you determined to find fault regardless.

I am a mellow , laid back kind of person but that post pushed me to the end of a very long piece of string.

How do you know posts are deleted when a single member complains? Maybe dozens of people complain? Cari explained - honestly and openly I felt and still you aren't happy. I can see that only total free range would make you happy.

If you are talking about NOT banning Jingl because she has so many supporters ...really???? So ONE person may do as they like because you support her. Not every one did/does you know. Nothing against her- just like a previous poster - don't see her getting a sainthood anytime soon.

Go get that cuppa Cari or maybe something stronger wink

So Granny has been firmly returned to the corner again, while her carers sigh, whisper about how difficult she can be and dip their chocolate digestives in their tea.
Sorry Cari it won't wash
If as you say
We would prefer never to have to delete posts or suspend members - but we simply don't have the resources to deal with issues that happen over and over again.
Why are posts deleted because a single member complains?
Why don't you have a warning system for threads which are very vociferous?
And why do you ban someone who has so many supporters and who obviously brought people to the site?

We never delete a post on the strength of a single - or even multiple - report/s. The report system is there to bring anything of concern to our attention - we are a post-moderated site and simply don't have time to read everything that gets posted as it gets posted. So a report will alert us to something but will not influence what we do about it.

We do have a warning system - we often post on threads that are getting over heated. We might also email people to remind them that there is a thin line between a vociferous comment and a personal attack

Banning is a last resort. We obviously can't go into details about any specifics, suffice to say that it is never done lightly and there will always be more to it than may be immediately apparent

I never did get that cuppa.

That was a sigh of sympathy just to be clear.

Just to answer a couple of your points...

"We inhabit a goldfish bowl which must be respectable to the outside world looking in on an ageing cyber community. Old people are only expected to be curmudgeonly in books and TV nonsense."

Not in the slightest. You are welcome to be as curmudgeonly as you like (after all, I am a curmudgeon of the highest order* and a similar age to many others on here) What 'outsiders' think looking in is absolutely not our concern. The very essence of the site is that people can be who and what they want to be - we are the last to subscribe to the everyone-must-fit-a-stereotype mentality.

* and if 2016 hasn't given us enough stuff to moan about already, god help us. Pleeeease let 2017 be better.

We have no issue with swearing whatsoever (well....the C word may be a different matter - but the rest...no issue). In fact it's many of our users who have the issue - mostly when very strong language is used on the forums we get flurries of complaints about it. Our response is, as backed up in our netiquette section, that while we are aware that many people don't like swearing, this is a site for grown-ups so basically it's fine

The thing to remember is nothing to do with advertising revenue, spats or otherwise (why, after all, should we sanitise our opinions as we get older? Mine have certainly gone the other way since I hit 50). But basically we are a tiny team, responsible for the site 24/7 365 days a year. We have very few rules and the ones that are there are there for a reason. Heated debate/argument/bust-ups are fine as long as they don't descend into personal attacks or anything that is libellous etc etc. We spend an inordinate amount of time telling people that if they don't like the, um, lively nature of political threads etc then best to steer clear of them. We would prefer never to have to delete posts or suspend members - but we simply don't have the resources to deal with issues that happen over and over again, despite polite entreaties and firmer warnings.

Folk who hide behind the sofa when all hell breaks loose should know better than to get caught in the cross-fire. As I've just mentioned above - absolutely.

The bottom line is that we don't want bland any more than you do. We love the variety of threads we see, from the mundane to the outspoken, from the humorous to the supportive, and everything in between. Voice strong opinions, please! Disagree with others who don't share your views - of course! Stirring things up for the sake of it - not so much. (That's a general point by the way, not implying for a second this is something you would do!)

And on that note I need a cuppa brew brew

annsixty Mon 28-Nov-16 09:46:23

Grannyknot grin

Elegran Mon 28-Nov-16 09:35:22

Everyone gets spells when they are just not interested in posting anything for a while - well, I certainly do. Then they drift back again, or not.

Elegran Mon 28-Nov-16 09:33:29

I think Frank made a totally unexpected joke in extremely bad taste. Can't remember what about, but I wasn't surprised when he was rapped over the knuckles for it and then vanished.

But then, sometimes HQ discover, when they look more closely at a poster, that they have been conning us all by adopting a very distinctive personality and posting to suit until they get bored and come out of character with something from their real selves. I'm not definitely fingering Frank, but I suspect that has happened a few times over the years with posters who seem somehow unreal and then disappear in "suspicious circumstances"

Grannyknot Mon 28-Nov-16 09:25:47

I also wonder what has happened to some, quite prolific, posters who are not at all controversial.

I suspect they got bored with all the controversy! smile

annsixty Mon 28-Nov-16 09:16:47

If I got it right Frank was banned for being boring.
Bring back Frank. Teeshirts will be available.

annsixty Mon 28-Nov-16 09:11:51

This all smacks of the school playground but perhaps some never lose that spiteful streak. I also wonder what has happened to some, quite prolific, posters who are not at all controversial. If I drop off my perch no-one would know as my H is oblivious to what I do online.

Maggiemaybe Mon 28-Nov-16 08:58:19

It would be helpful if GNHQ could actually tell us when people are barred, without going into detail of course.

We could all be wasting our time agitating for someone to be reinstated when they've just got fed up and gone or, heaven forfend, fallen off their perch.

I do miss jingl, she was sharp and witty. My own theory is that skullduggery behind the scenes saw her off, but maybe we'll never know.

I hadn't missed obieone, but will now I know she's gone.
