Oh no, never laugh at them, that would be utterly unacceptable, but a giggle between cousins, as it was in my case, did help us get through the sadness of watching as a beloved aunt and uncle disintegrate mentally and physically.

My brothers and I have always laughed at the way Alzheimer's has affected mum - it is our way of coping. Although we have all had difficulties in our relationship with mum, we wouldn't laugh at her!

I know what you mean MOnica, I used to tell my dad that he had lent money off me and so could I have it back please? Or that he had eaten all the biscuits on the plate. Poor chap was already confused and I just made him worse! But he saw the funny side and humour certainly got us through, it is a wonder we didn't get thrown out of The Christie (cancer hospital) really, not a good place to be cracking jokes but it is a tension reliever and was needed at the time. In fact, it was amazing, the atmosphere in there, you would think it would be all doom and gloom and it wasn't in the slightest, plenty of cheerful patients and their families. The human spirit is amazing.

kitty I am glad that your mum is still shaking her maracas, good on her. Enjoy every moment. flowers

kittylester the reports from the mum front always lighten my day, but I was responsible for a close relative with dementia, not my mother, and often being able to see the funny side was the only thing that got me through.

It may not be pc to say that unintended humour can come from someone with dementia but it does.

but she slept the whole time. It's not surprising really as she was in the lounge yesterday shaking maracas while the entertainer sang. grin
