Hooray - the Conservatives won the election!

Several people on GN made posts saying something like " Hooray - the Conservatives won the election! "

I'd like to ask if they, or anyone else who agrees with them, have seen the film "I, Daniel Blake" and, if so, have they any comment to make?

People who were not happy when the Conservatives won the election, please do not post on this thread.

Yes Annieb possibly constant rainbows for us all as well.

When Corbyn is PM, no one will live in poverty, no one will be unemployed, there will be houses for everyone , there will always be empty seats on trains,

Think I will read Alice In Wonderland again

Djen oh, haven't we had a lot of Labour Governments since Cathy Come Home?
The truth is, that there will always be people in need under ANY government ( since the population here is growing by millions then there will be even more.)
The young Mother in the film was helped wasn't she, food and council housing given.

Which party does Loach support now? He was a member of Goerge Galloways Respect Party ,

Anniebach Mon 14-Nov-16 08:32:35

Jen, you think all those people will be saved by Corbyn , no , and you are helping the country on the road to another Tory Government .

FarNorth Mon 14-Nov-16 07:33:55

Sorry Shanma, and anyone else who was annoyed.
I just wanted opinions of this film from supporters of the Conservatives.

durhamjen Mon 14-Nov-16 00:50:38

There's your answer, FarNorth.
If I were you, I'd go on the I Daniel Blake thread, where you will find some people who have seen it and appreciate the reality of it.
No Tory would ever admit to what austerity is doing to the country.

Why would you expect a less biased approach from the man who produced Cathy Come Home?
I was reading today about a single mum who had just had a baby and then was made redundant because the company she worked for closed.
She was given no maternity benefit and had to prove she was a single mum to the DWP. She ended up at a food bank as she had no money for over five weeks. She felt so bad at not being able to provide for her children any more that she burst into tears. They helped her get a council house because she had lost her home as she couldn't pay the rent.

I assume you think that's all cliches too, but it's real life for some people.
The film was well researched, but obviously not in the DM.
It was filmed in Newcastle. The food bank exists, the largest foodbank in the country. Those queues are real. They were not all actors.
Have you not heard that lots of faamilies have been told to move away from London to get accommodation elsewhere? That's real, too.
If you told me about your life, Ceesnan, I'd probably think you lived a cliched life, too. Just different cliches.

Shanma Mon 14-Nov-16 00:25:48

I have not seen the Film, nor did I vote Conservative. I do object to being told not to post on any thread though for whatever reason.
Is the OP running Gn now then? What a cheek!

Ceesnan Sun 13-Nov-16 21:01:30

I know I should have thought more before going to see it. After all, I know Ken Loach is a gritty, tell it like he sees it film maker. I rather naively expected a less biased approach. Stupid really.....ah well....

FarNorth Sun 13-Nov-16 20:50:47

Thank you for answering the question in the OP, Ceesnan.

Penstemmon Sun 13-Nov-16 20:22:27

If you know these things happen and you are not callous why did you think 'Oh for God's sake' ? It was clearly advertised as a film about the current "benefit" system! confused

I wished the film had taken more interest into
a)the Job Centre workers..who by the skin of their teeth may have been escaping Daniel's situation
b) the company / organisation who run Job Centres
I think that would have given another perspective.

I do agree that the food bank scene was uncomfortable and not my experience of Food banks.

Ceesnan Sun 13-Nov-16 20:05:36

The interviews at the job centre, relocated single mum, food bank despair....I'm not callous and I know these things happen but. i just found myself thinking "Oh for God's sake..." so walked out. I should have read up a bit about it and saved myself some cash!

Penstemmon Sun 13-Nov-16 19:46:29

Which cliche you dislike the most ceesnan? There were some.

Penstemmon Sun 13-Nov-16 19:45:03

Try these

Ceesnan Sun 13-Nov-16 19:44:46

I started watching it but walked out about half way through it. Every cliche in the book and then some more thrown in for good measure. However, I do read the DM so really was the wrong demograph....

Ana Sun 13-Nov-16 19:35:27

Which sales figures? confused

Penstemmon Sun 13-Nov-16 19:24:45

soory..fat fingers and a large G&T fingers tonight!

Penstemmon Sun 13-Nov-16 19:24:08

The small c was a conscious choice Ana. Do you really think there are more mainpaper uardian readers on GN than those who read the DM as their main paper? That would really buck the sales figures!

rosesarered Sun 13-Nov-16 19:19:58

Phew Jalima that's good ( but no doubt the fate of many others little things is not so good.)

Jalima Sun 13-Nov-16 19:15:50

we usually wait until something comes on the tv

Anniebach Sun 13-Nov-16 19:14:48

No, didn't cheer when the Tories won the election in 2015

No, have not seen the film , will watch it if and when it is shown on tv

Not deeply interested , I have no time for the new red labour momentum party

Jalima Sun 13-Nov-16 19:14:38

I told DH to tell me when it had finished, but I did see the baby iguana reach the beach and his friends!

Ana Sun 13-Nov-16 19:12:58

I've managed to avoid seeing that, having been pre-warned!

rosesarered Sun 13-Nov-16 19:06:16

Jalima when Planet Earth got to the bit where the snakes went eagerly towards the baby lizardy thing, whizzing down the beach.....I switched off fast!

Jalima Sun 13-Nov-16 19:05:31

Graunaid? It sounds like a breakfast cereal
