What to call the UK?

Nice one Granny23! Just thought that having blocked all the unwanted immigrants on the South coast there would be a gaping hole up North. Of course some of us might want to join Scotland anyway.

More likely the other way round Trisher Why would a refugee or immigrant want to leave underpopulated, welcoming Scotland for an England which so obviously doesn't want them?

If Scotland stays in the EU and England isn't will the Border counties them become a site for illegal immigration, as people try to get into Brexit England? If so it will be continuing a long tradition of lawlessness and rebellion. Of course by then England's economy may have shrunk so much no one will want to come here!

Roses But if Scotland declares Independence during the next couple of years we will still be in the EU and with Scotland no longer part of the UK, when the UK leaves the EU, Scotland will remain in. That's the proposition and that's why Nicola did her whistle stop tour of European leaders immediately post brexit.

There was an article in the Financial Times which was extremely supportive of this proposal as Big Business and Finance Houses, in order to be still IN the EU, would be able to simply relocate their HQ to English speaking, friendly Edinburgh (great news for the Scottish economy) rather than Frankfurt or Paris.

My children were ready to emigrate as they saw Brexit as being motivated by racism and didnt want to live in such a country i.e. The UK. This is no knee jerk reaction as they are both very interested and informed. They would probably vote for independence in another referendum and their young friends feel much the same.
I am not going to speak for anyone else but for myself, I want to see what is being offered on leaving the EU before I decide how to vote in another referendum. Meanwhile I am glad that the First Minister is fighting our corner. That is her job.

The thing is... do Scottish people really want to not only be out of the EU but also be out of the UK? It's not at all certain that they would be allowed to apply to the EU (and be accepted.)

I thought it was doubtful that voters would want to leave the EU but, hey, they did.
We live in uncertain times.

At the last Scottish referendum, there were several Scottish Gransnetters that certainly didn't want to leave the UK, given that we will shortly be out of the EU it's doubtful that voters in Scotland will now want full independence.But, hey, we will see.

Grannypiper - the same could be said for Mr Salmond when he was running the party but at least they want something better for Scotland other than the utter rubbish this Tory government is dishing out and wee Nicola was the only person that seemed to do anything in the first few days post Brexit vote!

Boris went into hiding (as he never expected to win in a million years and was hoping to sweep in with the vote of no confidence in Cameron and "not much I can do about Brexit but I'm the better man to lead the country" - except that backfired on him ever so slightly).

Cameron did the "well sod the lot of you, I'm outta here" to leave the mess to some other poor unfortunate soul.

And UKIP imploded (and still hasn't recovered).

This government hasn't a clue what they are doing and seem to be winging it.

I was involved in re-writing one piece of legislation and that took over 2 years so laugh at the thought of this government attempting to write anything. Experts have taken years to write these regulations / trade deals under consultation with industry and other European experts / companies. Do you really believe they will be able to re-write over 40 years worth of legislation in 2 years? Seriously?! Canada took EIGHT YEARS to get their trade deal signed and that was a relatively straight forward affair. I dread to think what mess will be made if any of the hardliners get their mitts on things.

And if Mrs May thinks she'll get to cherry pick what she wants for the "U.K." She is utterly deluded. The EU will dictate what the UK will get as it'll only take one "no" vote from them for that to be scuppered.

Whatever backhander deal she's promised Nissan will pale into significance when other companies start asking for the same deal (or better). Expect prices to rise sharply next year and don't bother going on holiday as the £ is worth less than toilet paper (literally). Then, in the not to distant future you'll need a new passport (kerching), a visa (kerching) and better insurance as you won't have your EHC giving you reciprocal health care (yes, you'll be charged for that too as there is no way the EU will hand out free healthcare if you get sick on your week holiday to the end).

Yes Scotland will have to fight to get its place in Europe but we aren't the poor little brother to England that the south would like you to believe (if we were such a burden, then why want us to remain? Surely you'd want to sever all ties at the first opportunity yet the Tories were practically begging Scotland to remain...why is that? Perhaps because Scotland puts in more per head than any of the other members of team U.K....(outwith the city of London) and has done so for the last 3 decades.

So yes, I'm right behind Nicola and admire her for demanding that Scotland be heard and doesn't get dragged down a road most people up here don't want to go. At least she believes in something and has a clearer vision for Scotland than this Westminster government has for the whole of the UK.

So, I make no apologies for not wanting to accept the Brexit vote when more of my fellow Scots voted to remain in Europe than leave.

Oh try Googling Nicola Sturgeon popularity after last general election debate and you'll see that quite a few people like(d) her as she's the only politician that looks remotely like she has a plan. She never asked for a second referendum in the run up to the Brexit vote but she also can't ignore the Scottish people wanting to remain part of the EU. If that can be achieved without the break up of the United Kingdom then fine but if not and the only way Scotland can achieve membership of the EU is through a second referendum then bring it on.

I don't hate her, or Farage.You have to know somebody to hate them.Both of them grate on me that's all, instant hackles.

Nicola Sturgeon has the highest net approval rating for a leader of a major political party, a new TNS poll reveals.

The TNS survey of almost 1200 adults in Great Britain looked at the perceptions of the British public towards Nicola Sturgeon as leader of the SNP. In both of the televised leaders’ debates, the feedback from the ‘snapshot’ polls and indeed the wider media commentary was extremely positive – not only within Scotland but throughout the rest of Great Britain. Analysis that TNS has conducted of the coverage on social media confirmed the positive reaction to her performance. Consequently, it is not surprising that when asked how they would rate her performance as leader of the SNP, she received a strong endorsement – 51% gave her a positive rating and 18% a negative rating – a net score of +33. As featured in Table 1, this compares very favourably with the performance of all of the other party leaders – David Cameron and Nigel Farage being the other leaders with positive net scores. Indeed, her high positive rating exceeds anything we have previously recorded in similar questions asked of party leaders.

Interestingly, those aged over 55 years of age were more likely to give Nicola Sturgeon a higher rating than younger people, aged under 25. Not surprisingly, amongst the sample of Scots, her positive rating increased to 70% with 15% giving her a negative rating – a net score +55. In direct contrast, Ed Milliband’s net score amongst Scots was -2 and for David Cameron it was -7.

FGS.......all this about being 'ashamed' of your country! do you think there are no racist taunts / attacks etc in Germany, France and other countries?There are plenty!
More to the point, there have always been racist attacks here, this was never the land of sweetness and light ( nor anywhere else) when it comes to immigrants and foreigners, but fortunately there are not all that many in the great scheme of things.

My foreign DIL has suffered from increasing racist encounters whilst living in England and I dread to think of what my DGS might encounter when he starts school. It's abhorrent.

England is not the great country it once was and I'm grateful I can afford to live elsewhere.

I m not proud of UK any more when I see the many racist incidents going on I am particularly disappointed and ashamed that my name is linked to my country any more and yes I love my country but no longer feel I am part of it I feel I need to apologise for our behaviour If I was younger I definitely would be emigrating to somewhere with a more open and less insular outlook If I was in Scotland I d definitely want to break away to stay in Europe and if I had any ancestors from any where I d be relinquishing my Uk passport as soon as I could

HA HA ! where I live in France anyone who speaks English is English !! I once tried to post a letter addressed to someone and put ECOSSE (French for Scotland) .....La Poste informed me that no such place existed and I must cross it out and put Royaume Uni !!! ,,,,anyway, seemingly with the number of people trying to get in, UTOPIA might be a suitable name ! (unless you were born there, that is !_
