A few weeks ago I needed help connecting our Heidenhain control to the laptop and you lot let me down, no help at all .

However, our local computer guy has sorted it. He found an old pc with the right connectors and loaded Windows 98, retrieved the files and software from my dead laptop and it is now working - and he only charged £60, which included two visits here. Restores your faith in people. Next he is going to network all our pcs together as I can't back up from this pc (not unless we can find a suitable old HD and software).

Oh dear, trying to sort out papers while DH is having his blood transfusion, I am afraid I might have burnt out the shredder
If I say nothing, will anybody notice??

DaphneB Tell your husband that some weird virus has infected the shredder. You never know, such a daft excuse might seem plausible.

Tizliz we have a good pal in the village who "works in computers". He's very helpful when our slow-to-please, antiquated model develops a blip. In fact, he usually persuades us to "invest" in a reconditioned one (that he happens to have at home).

callgirl1 I wish that I had been in a friendlier frame of mind. By the way, every time I use the memory button on our phone, I invariably connect with the builder in Tarbert. He knows that it's a miss-dialled call whenever our number shows on his screen. The number of times that he's called is a great embarrassment to me. He's a pleasant chap. Thank goodness.

The appointment that has been cancelled is as a result of the clinic being postponed on that given day. I was beginning to fear that I've been such a pain in the 'arris the NHS has black-listed me.

Daphne Is it a staple caught in the teeth? I have killed two shredders that way. Sometimes you can get it out with the pointed end of a skewer, sometimes not. If you have to throw out the machinery part, the container underneath makes a good wastepaper basket (for the papers you can't shred any more because you have no shredder)

On Guy Fawkes night I had a bonfire of all the confidential stuff I didn't want to put into the recycling. I thought that was one time the neighbours couldn't complain about the smoke.

soop I do not know what to say about the NHS- it certainly does not improve.

I received an appointment yesterday for the eye clinic at the Moorfields branch of my local for my AMD. I am allowed one appointment change but if I need another or heaven help me, have to cancel because of illness nearer the time, I have to start all over again with a letter from my GP etc. It is obviously very different when the boot is on the other foot.

Quick visit. Hope the clinic will soon be reinstated, Soop. Sounds as if you need to be at your appointment no matter if you are unwell, charlie. I have far less hair than I did before our friend was admitted, must be six weeks ago now, a lot has been torn out because of the vagaries of the NHS. Hope the shredder just needed to cool down, daphne, lost count of the number I have killed . Best be off, still tidying before some friends staying for a week. Needed a sit down .

DaphneBroom it just over heated from over enthusiastic use! Take it slower next time. I know they say you can shred 5/6/10 (whatever) sheets at once but that is what overheats it.

Daphne after a cool down it will be fine- it just gets overheated unforunately only too quickly.

I've almost completed the portrait of Dexter. I shall photograph it tomorrow and share with you.

One moment I was dashing away with the smoothing iron, when it started puthering with the smelliest smoke I've yet to encounter. MacS was called. I had already switched off at the socket. Just as well, because it (the iron) was about to burst into flame. Heck! MacSporran says that I'm not to use it. It's being dumped. I shall have a new one next week. Nice!

Away to feed the cats. They are sitting together in the utility room, lolling on a well-aired blanket.

Dexter's portrait...he's a very young poodle. An absolute challenge, but I'm pleased that I persevered.

Soop, you could never be a pain in the `arris or anything else! Shows how old my mobile phone is, you`re still down on there as Supernana, that`s going back a bit!
Daughter number 3 and her hubby have a house in Spain, I`ve been press-ganged into going over there with them for a week at the end of this month, and have just realised that when I get back, there`ll only be 3 weeks to Christmas, and I haven`t bought a single present yet, but haven`t really been in the mood. Suppose I`ll have to get down to it soon.

I think that is lovely callgirl and very well deserved. I hope you have a good rest and come to terms with all that has happened.

Great minds definitely think alike as I was going to suggest that after a rest make sure DH someone else uses the shredder first.!

soop it sounds as if you were very lucky with the iron and you won't be able to do any more ironing until the new one is bought, Such a shame.
I think that maybe it is a good thing that you and callgirl didn't realise who you were talking to (grammar) You would probably still be nattering now.

I'm glad you are able to have the week in Spain with your daughter cg1 Christmas will come and Christmas will go and it really doesn' matter if you are not ready for it. Nobody will expect you to be.

I was given a weeks access to the ArtTutor web site, thye have a range of art classes and courses, very surprised just how good they are. trying to get all I can from my free week (it's the Yorkshire in me). it has re-kindled my interest in watercolour.

Hello I have not been here for a while. Last Thursday I developed buggeration of a sore throat and a cough which a number of people locally have had. Trying to cough up thick gunge at at times and not being able to stop.
This went on all week. I was waking up in the night to cough helplessly.
Wednesday night was awful and I was almost wheezing. I have been up every night with my head over a bowl of hot water to loosen the cough. It is getting better but my airways are still sore. I have no appetite at all I am making a small amount of cereal before I go to bed because I ought to.

This is a nasty bug. Inhaling the steam did help so its worth trying.
I have got nothing done this week and my brain has felt foggy. This morning I realised that I did feel better over all. I am hoping I can get a nights sleep and not have to get out of bed. I know others of you have some breathing issues I can see now how debilitating this can be.
As I "only get get the odd cold"?? But I have not had something as bad as this for years.

It first came over me early August and I cricked my neck with the coughing. This second bout is similar but the chest and throat seems much more uncomfortable this time. If you have a cold keep warm indoors. A nice brisk walk in the cold sunny air will get the bug right into your chest. Cold air does make you more prone to illness and lowers your immune system.

I bought an expensive "cross cut" Fellows shredder. The first one got so blocked up It died and I got a refund it
same thing happened to the second one. I think the very cross cuttting mechanism was so complicated It was doomed from the start.

We have now had a £12 ASDA one for several years and it works ok as long as you do not over load it. It says it's a 4x r compost heap and then dig them out a year or so later when they are well decomposed.
