They don't make 'em like they used to!

My hand mixer bought as a wedding present so nearly 49 years and still going strong!!

I have one of those Phillips hand mixers that is over 40 years old and still works. I have a lava lamp from the 60s which I do occasionally use at parties. I saw a programme about Kenwood mixers ( designed by Ken Wood) and they were built to last. There is a guy who renovates the original ones and sells them for a huge amount and can't keep up with the demand. The company was sold to someone else and ceased to be made in the UK and the quality went right down. Shame.

Nothing electrical lasts with me. I like things to wear out and need replacing. A bit like the cycle of life really.

We have an upright freezer that we were given as a wedding present - in 1975. I know that it isn't very energy-efficient by today's standards and I would love to change it for a new one, but unfortunately when we had our kitchen refitted the new kitchen was built around the freezer and the new ones are not the same size and would not fit in the gp which this one would leave!

We bought our micro wave from Bejams Probably 25+ years old.

My lovely Hotpoint top-loader washing machine is now 35 years old and is still working. It has some problems now, but the fact that it can fill from the hot water as well as the cold means that a wash can take about half an hour, a third of the time DD's one takes. I dread the day when it finally gives up!

Another vote for Kenwood here. My Cheffette is nearly 50 years old and works a treat. Our fridge, Electra, was Mum's, but when she downsized, we swopped fridges. I don't know how old it is, but it does boast an ice box, and it does need defrosting regularly. I had to buy a new inside lamp for it last year, so that is probably worth more than the fridge now.

I still have the transistor radio my parents bought for my 16th Birthday, 45 years ago, that was a real prize then, greatly appreciated which is probably why it still works because I treated it like the Crown Jewels. You can't get much on it now but I keep it for sentimental reasons and it might be useful if the digital world ever collapses!

Hooint washing machine 14 years old
Kenwood Chef 52 years old
Lovely old German piano about 100 years old. Is that an appliance?

Another Kenwood here, I have had it for 54 years. I won it in a Kenwood competition when they first came out. I use it mostly for Christmas and wedding cakes now as it's too big to sit on the work surface and too heavy to lift in and out of the cupboard. My food processor is in constant use but needs replacing every 5 or so years. Sadly they're not built to either repair or last!

I would have liked to have said my Phillips hand mixer, which was bought when DD was born, but sadly, it died this year after 45 years of constant use. I now have a Kenwood and don't expect it to last half as long. I took my Granton knife into one of the cutlery firms here in Sheffield today to be re-handled. It was a wedding present fifty years ago and has been used all that time. For the cost of the work, I could have bought a new one, and DH asked why I didn't. When I said it was an heirloom and I wanted to pass it on to my daughter, he fell about laughing. He has no soul.?

Hoover keymatic! My mum had one of the first ones in probably the late 60's. Wonderful until one day the "key" got mislaid putting the wash on hold until it could be found! I was given a Kenwood Chefette for a wedding present in October 1971 making it 45 years old this very weekend

a word of warning to those who have "ancient" boilers - they are not only inefficient but also contain asbestos. If they should go wrong your Gas Safety Engineer will condemn it. We had an old boiler which we had replaced under the Warm Front Scheme about 6/7 years ago - ours was nearly 30 years old & had to be collected by a specialist firm.

I don't have any old appliances now as I moved last year & had to seriously downsize. Kitchen & appliances are approx 3 years old apart from my washer/dryer which is only about 18 months old.

Oldest kitchen item I own is my Prestige utensil rack which is nearly 40 years old, my Mum's is approx 58 years old, both were Wedding presents still used regularly !!

Another Kenwood mixer, a baby at 42 years young! My Singer hand sewing machine, 1920 is still used by GD.

moulinex hand blender my ex MIL bought me for Christmas 25 years ago

I had a light-up makeup mirror in 1974. Used it almost daily, then sadly said goodbye to it in 2014. The bulb lasted until then! (New mirror just not as good).

My Pifco hand mixer which is 40 years old, and was a birthday present. It makes wonderful mashed potato.?

Not me,but my late DM had a washing machine that kept going for 25 years. She bought it in 1982 and it finally gave up in 2007. It did have minor small repairs along the way though. She also had a fridge that she bought in 1979,was us still going now,37 years on. It has never had any repairs but is looking decidedly shabby now and the ice box (remember those?) is getting beyond a joke. Needs defrosting every 2 weeks. Imagine it will be written off before long.

Our old Creda tumble dryer lasted for years, we only go rid of it because all the paint had peeled off.

My creda tumbler dryer was bought in 1979. but I do have a hoover floor polisher
( yellow with two turning scrubbing brushes) in the gararage that may or may not be working a wedding present in 1975

OMG, an iron that lasts more than a couple of years, Mrs P seem to go through iron like hot cakes. Fingers crossed she does like her current steam generator one.

I have a steam iron that I bought in 1981; it's a Tefal corded/cordless and I love it dearly.

I do still have my original Kenwood Chef from 1979 but it's had a new motor.

That's reminded me. I have my mother's old Singer sewing machine. It's 52 years old an still works a treat.

My sewing machine, 42 years old, bought when I was a student and couldn't afford to buy clothes. I used to buy old curtains at jumble sales and make them into skirts and tops.
