A word from my dim and distant past. Any of you here still have fun? If so what is it? Be interested to see the replies smile

Elrel Wed 19-Oct-16 12:50:43

Singlegrannie - too right! It's much more difficult alone. Kicking leaves is the first solitary activity to spring to mind!
Vampiregirl. If I see a couple of growing down age in a tree I'll know it's you! Do you hang there upside down. I sometimes congratulate young Goths on their appearance or just beam at them. They smile back and are very receptive. I've even been told it's not too late for me to be a Goth!!
Fun? We chortled at Bookclub and giggled about aliens (don't ask!) at tai chi. At poetry tomorrow the amount of humour will depend upon who shares which poem! I'll polish up my Brexit one 'Democrazy' though that is more irony than fun perhaps ?

I would define fun as something that lifts your spirits - a bit more than a pleasant day visiting a stately home. What that is varies from one person to another, you have to recognise what does/did it for you and look for a source of it.

Music is one thing - if you went dancing in your youth, then play CDs of the music you used to dance to, preferably ones with a strong beat and a recognisable melody. Making music yourself is even better, particularly if it is with others. Doing something for someone else and seeing them happier is another.

If your whole life seems drear and joyless, maybe pay a visit to the GP to get some temporary prescription help while you look for non-chemical lifts.

Depends what you call fun. Just enjoying being alive, TG and in good health. I'm still working and my grandkids all live abroad so some times are more fun than others but just ' making the most of the moment' , which I'm not always good at, but try to do , is 'fun'.

kittylester Wed 19-Oct-16 12:01:42

But, no-one has defined fun. Despite various worries, my life is fun/full of enjoyment. I am in the fortunate position of having (currently) an enjoyable life but am I having fun? If I was generally unhappy or sad then maybe I'd like more fun. Depends on your definition. Perhaps it depends on your disposition.

I am fortunate to be a 'we'. Fun times most weekends boating, then socialising, few drinks etc. I guess if I become 'one', I will try to join a couple of clubs health permitting! Maybe WI. I think as long as we/I have friends, days/nights out are the fun times ????

wot Wed 19-Oct-16 11:56:31

And apart from GN, I haven't met anyone funny for a l o n g time.

wot Wed 19-Oct-16 11:52:28

I think the most fun comes from being with a person who makes you laugh!

Ruthyo Wed 19-Oct-16 11:45:48

Yes I have loads of fun with my OH, this weekend we are off on the steam train to a food festival and last weekend I had a weekend away with my three girlfriends in a caravan (cheap and cheerful but we giggled lots!)

vampirequeen Wed 19-Oct-16 11:31:58

I agree fun comes in many forms.

I'm just lucky enough to be able to have the taste of the childhood that I never had.

Jane10 Wed 19-Oct-16 11:26:20

It seems that we all define 'fun' differently. For me its just having a laugh with friends and family but also can be just plain enjoyment rather than wild antics and larking around.

vampirequeen Wed 19-Oct-16 11:22:50

Didn't mean to sound smug. My only excuse is that we didn't meet until 8 years ago. Prior to that we'd been in pretty dire relationships. In a way we've only been alive for 8 years.

I envy the way children can go into imaginary worlds. I'd so love to be able to do that but then, at my age, people would probably think I'd got dementia or a mental illness if I start talking to invisible people. The only time it happened in the last few years was when I was running a high fever and told the doctor that I was OK because my grandma was looking after me. He asked how old my grandma was and I told him I had no idea because she was dead. I was whisked into hospital due to fever hallucinations. My grandma is going to be so cross if she took the trouble to come back and then was called an hallucination grin

Craftycat Wed 19-Oct-16 11:14:27

YES! I have fun with friends at lunches, drama group, reading group, craft groups, theatre trips & at W.I. & also with my grandchildren. Have fun with DH watching rugby too.
I guess it depends what you mean by 'fun'. I think it is when you find yourself laughing ( not that often at rugby come to think about it!! Maybe only when we win!)

Helena1 Wed 19-Oct-16 11:14:14

I remember fun...vaguely! hmm

BlueBelle Wed 19-Oct-16 11:12:55

Yorkshiregirl it's very easy to have fun when grandkids are youngish I did all those things you are doing I ve rolled down hills played in fallen leaves gone on swings but those times pass and they become teens young adults with lives of their own

I do have a social life I lunch with friends I go to the cinema I go to visit castles or national 'things ' these are all pleasant pursuits but I don't think of them as fun I think the original poster is talking about unadulterated moments of whatever, not a planned journey or visit I think we have different descriptions of 'fun'

Cathy21 all you describe would be pleasant pastimes for me but my idea of fun is totally losing it for a minute or two or an hour or whatever so what you call fun wouldn't be the same description for me If I went on a lovely coach trip I d come home and say what a pleasant day I ve had, if I was trying to ride one of my grandkids bikes down a hill with legs and scarves flying while they rolled about laughing I say what fun we had today For me they are totally different things and I MISS hugely the FUN in life

grannypiper Wed 19-Oct-16 11:04:21

vampirequeen, your post made me smile.Have a great day

KirbyGirl Wed 19-Oct-16 11:04:18

Recommend line dancing - no partner, exercise for brain and body. My class was all old ladies and we always laughed a lot. Can't do it now because of hip problems but I jdo wonder if Shanma isn't slightly depressed.

I tried Fitsteps and a friend does Adult Ballet and always came out feeling wonderful. A lot of laughs too.

How do you correct errors? Sorry about them.

Yorkshiregel Wed 19-Oct-16 11:01:14

Bluebell the kind of fun you are talking about is the fun we used to have at the Shuffling Squares club. Nothing better when you get some of the moves wrong and everyone goes off in an unexpected direction. We used to have such a laugh. A cup of tea after the exercise is an opportunity to chat with new people and make friends. Also we used to have classes where we learned to make our own outfits.

Cathy21 Wed 19-Oct-16 10:57:20

My husband and I line dance twice a week and go on line dance weekends. We have lots of lovely friends that way. We also swim 3 times a week, great fun and saves our shower, We lunch with a lunch club and with another friend. I make cards and my husband loves to help. He his great at cutting and choosing bolours and he loves to use my Cuttlebug cutter. In Summer w visit NT properties and we have Ness gardens close and always find that a joy to walk round. My husband has great funn making all our bread, even Sour Dough. Also we have a little tourer caravan and love to have a few days away. I find Facebook Fun. A shared FUN is our love of competitions. We search supermarkets for them and it's great fun winning something to share with family and friends.I had an operation to remove a melanoma yesterday and it's fun just being alive.

University of the Third Age as someone has pointed out is a great place to find fun. They do all sorts of things where you can meet people of both sexes and do something you like such as Art, Music, learning something such as Pottery, how to sew things, you can even join a knitting group where you can have a good laugh. When my OH was posted overseas and I was alone we wives used to run a beatle drive and take it in turns to hold it in our homes. We used to have a little gift that the host provided for the winner, something pretty a pot plant for example, nothing expensive. We used to have a great laugh and it stopped us feeling lonely.

I am sorry for anyone who is finding life lonely, but it doesn't need to be. Look in the local paper for what you would call 'fun' and have the courage to join. If you don't like it you can always leave and look for something else. A gardening volunteer or a class in horticulture would be fun. You can always volunteer to have a puppy for the blind. If you likes dogs that would be fun. I used to volunteer to be a teacher's helper at the local nursery. Believe me making hand paintings and things out of clay or helping with the Nativity Play is fun.

Yorkshiregel Wed 19-Oct-16 10:45:49

I have five grandchildren from three children. We have LOADS of fun. We go for walks in the hills, enjoying nature, and the park where there are swings and tunnels etc and we can be children ourselves again. There is a lovely park near Rutland Water. We also get the jigsaws out and time ourselves to complete them. We play all kinds of card games, whist, rummy and even poker, and also other games such as Pandemic, B ombs, Backgammon, Chess with our older grandson. We go and see the annual passing out parade where grandson is a Sgt Instructor in the CCF. Swimming, cycling, badminton are all the exercise we get these days apart from the garden. OH goes out to lunch with his cousins and also old workmates. I have my art and my writing. Yes, we have fun! When the fun stops I will be six feet under. If you are not having fun then get yourself out there and join a club ie walking, bowling, gardening, reading, or volunteer for something such as teaching children to play the piano or read a book, look for fun places to go, help with making costumes for the carnival. You can always find fun if you look hard enough. The problem these days is that people rely too much on the tv and there is not much fun on that these days. There is nothing to stop you going to a castle or a day out to someone else garden. Make your own fun. Life is too short to sit and wait for judgement day.

wot Wed 19-Oct-16 10:32:43

Quite agree, Bluebelle, I have a very grumpy "partner" who wants to do nothing with me; not even chores or gardening.

Lindaloulabel Wed 19-Oct-16 10:28:10

Line dancing 3 times a week and never stop laughing trying to do it. Its a great feeling when you get it right. Meeting some wonderful people too! smile

Skweek1 Wed 19-Oct-16 10:26:22

I still can't resist the temptation to go on a swing in the local park - the nearest thing to being a bird I can imagine.

granma47 Wed 19-Oct-16 10:21:03

If you notice interviews with Americans they all seem to have fun

BlueBelle Wed 19-Oct-16 10:20:48

JayAnna can you give us an example of having fun on your own I don't need a man to give me fun but it does need someone as I said before you can enjoy things, you can have a nice meal, or visit with friends but that's not how I would define fun
Fun is being carefree, being daft, laughing with someone till you wet yourself, doing silly things with 'someone' be it grandkids, friends, or partners I can think of no fun situations you do on your own I enjoy walking on the beach alone but that not 'fun' it's pleasant
