Simple task scares you?

I am scared of driving at all. I didn't learn until my 30's and didn't have my own car for a while after that. I always felt I wasn't a good driver and was very nervous. When I went through the menopause my self confidence took a dive about anything and everything and I gave my car to my son. I now think it was one of my biggest mistakes and am paying for my 2 17yr old GC to learn.

Going to strange places without first checking the route and junctions on Google Earth Street View, and using the Sat Nav too; going into a pub on my own - I wait outside until my friend(s) arrive. I am also terrified of arriving late to collect G'dtrs from school - I live in a town that has a large ship canal running through it. When the bridges close to let the ships through the main roads I need to use snarl up for 30 mins or more. In five years of school and nursery runs I have only been delayed twice and have never actually been late. Nevertheless I leave a full hour early for a journey that usually takes 15mins. One the plus side, I usually get more than half an hour of calm 'my time' when I can park up and read in peace.

Thanks Tizliz - it's good to know it's not just me. I'm still wearing Gran 'L' plates. First GC is 4 months and I've yet to meet him (lives in Spain). I joined GN wearing my 'I'm a Gran' badge with pride lol. Some posts I've read have been amazing- others bring out the 'yikes'! GN sure is interesting!

haven't tried myself as we an air compressor in our workshop and use that.

Don't like glass floors or rope bridges they make me feel ill.

They should check your tyre pressure when you get your service done, or take it in to quick fit or tyre shop and ask them if they can check them and then put them at the correct pressure.

I use a foot pump which has a built-in pressure gauge. I also have one which works off the battery but am terrified of draining all the power.
My worst fear of the air line on a forecourt is letting all the air out, which I have heard happens sometimes.
Every time I wash my car (at home) I check all fluid levels and tyres. They rarely need topping up, apart from screen wash.

Selling on e-bay. Though why it should scare me I can't imagine. Every New Year I promise myself that this will be the year I crack it and every year I fail.

I dunno - I am glad when I get OFF a minor road and ON to the motorway. Especially when in the UK and I keep having to remind myself to drive on the left. There is nothing between me and the traffic coming the other way and I think 'only one of us needs to have a twitch and veer on to the wrong side of the road'. Why is everyone scared of motorways?

Roller coasters and bridges were no problem when I was younger. Nowadays I don't see the point of fun rides and if I'm in a cable car or on an open bridge (isn't the Millennium Bridge like that?) I just get on with it. Eyes shut if necessary.)

Crikey! I'm feeling like superwoman here and almost embarrassed to say there's only one thing that I NOW won't do ..... Replace the light bulbs simply because we have very high ceilings and with advancing age I find I literally get vertigo and go wibbly wobbly on approx the 6th step. I find this very frustrating because I used to paint 2nd floor windows up and down the ladder like a monkey etc .... I now have to wait for my son to visit.

My DH has literally never figured out how to replace a light bulb!

I hate with a vengeance travelling 'blind' on buses, i.e. in an area I don't know,not being sure where I have to get off. Especially when the person who has given me directions airily says 'You can't miss it'. Oh yes I can! Thankfully,it's not something that I have to do very often.

Juney64 - Well done for conquering your fear! I was exactly the same as you when I first started a couple of years ago. But I took the bull by the horns and managed to overcome my self-doubt. Now there's no stopping me!

I have no problem with spiders at all, and will happily handle one, I adore snakes, lizards etc however large which my Partner cannot get his head around.
However, heights reduce me to jelly. Even watching a film that shows a scene looking down from a building or anywhere high makes my legs go wobbly and my stomach starts churning. I have to look away. Several years ago, my Partner, who cannot understand my fear of heights tried desperately to persuade me to go on the London Eye.
"You will love it " he said.
"You will forget about the height once you are up there, because the view is so amazing".
I could not make him understand that the only view that I would see ( that is if I were STILL conscious) would be the floor of the pod as that is where I would be laying with my eyes closed tight fighting off the nausea and the fear.
He still believes that I would love the experience, so I made a deal with him.
I want to see you let a Tarantula walk over you, and I want to see you handle a snake.

Any where there are crowds.

I have a fear of going into a cafe or restaurant on my own. I would go all day without food rather than eat on my own. Since being a child I have had a fear of being near tall trees. We used to visit Dunham Woods (Cheshire) when I was small and I hated it (but never said anything).

All these posts make me feel a lot happier about my own bugbears. I live on a single track road by a river, so if someone is driving the other way I am forced to back up. Since I am useless at reversing ( once I nearly ended up in the river, another time I got jammed in a neighbour's metal bridge trying to turn round and bashed my car up) I send up prayers every time I have to stop outside my house to unload shopping, praying I won't meet some stroppy bas-- d who doesn't even live on my road coming at me the other way. It's very comforting knowing others share these fears.

Absolutely nothing else, love heights, anything like that but loathe, detest, abhor flying! I used to love it but a bad experience ruined it for me.

Motorway driving , driving somewhere I haven`t been before , I have to know the exact route or end up having a panic attack . I am pretty good at DIY and will try anything except electrics, can`t even change a plug. Jetties when the tide is in terrify me.

Changing lightbulbs (I can't stand on step ladders due to dizziness. My son is visiting on Saturday and will change the 2 dead lightbulbs upstairs. Ddriving on country lanes are avoided, don't know how anyone does it. I tend not to go any distance these days. Holiday's alone, there is no one to go with so I avoid it. I would love a holiday

I'm ok with roundabouts, motorways in the daytime, parallel parking which I do every day outside my house, but I won't use the self service pay thing in the petrol station or the supermarket. I want to deal with a person and I want them to keep their jobs.

Any type of driving doesn't worry me. I have even driven through Portugal, Spain and France to England on my own. I can parrallel park as long as no one is watching me and my husband has shown me how to reverse just using my wing mirrors rather than looking backwards as I was originally taught. But I am scared of heights and circular stairs in old buildings really scare me. But I think I could cope with the London Eye as have been on a cable car. But the thing I am most scared of is getting on and off trains in Portugal. It is such a large step up with a big gap between the platform and train. Bad enough when just getting on the train but also getting luggage on is a nightmare. I dont know how the Portuguese who are generally short in stature cope.

No choice in our local supermarkets, Asda and Tesco - they're all self-service and pay by card. Whose jobs do you mean, HannahLoiseLuke?

Rodent phobic and have mice that keep invading garage. Home alone yesterday and realised was disgusting corpse in a trap. Conquered my fear and disposed of it. It was quite a victory for me.
Parallel parking, though, is one of my weird niche skills. No idea why, can just skimmy a car in. Maybe I should redirect career as a valet parker.

Shizam can you give me some lessons please {grin]

Me too, I need to be able to drive in and gone are the days when half a street would be empty. I was never taught how to parallel park but I should learn.
