Penstemmon,fantastic comment and just in time. I was almost reduced to tears reading all the songs and comments and then you made me laugh. What brilliant timing and so true. I do agree, though, with the OP, there are many songs that bring either sad or happy feelings when you hear them, but very often no memory comes along to explain why.

Although technically not a song but a poem set to music, the Shores of Normandy by Jim Radcliffe gets me everytime. Hear and watch it on You Tube if it is new to you. Also:
"Is that all there is ?" by Peggy Lee as well. It must be one of the saddest songs that I have ever heard, and Peggy Lee does it justice.

Promise Me by Beverly Craven never fails to make me feel emotional.

I have the CD of the Irish Tenors as we first heard it in the 90s after seeing that concert on TV. I know all the words by heart and it gets me every single time. It will be played at my husband's funeral some day along with, of course, Abide With Me. His sons have instructions should I go first. (Welsh DH)

Tears rolling down my cheeks as I read your comments! There are a couple of hymns that always set me off too. I remember my mother singing them at the top of her voice whilst hoovering, when she was pissed off with my father. They had a difficult relationship, nowadays they would have gone their separate ways and been happy.

Do not know much about Boz Scaggs, but just listened to this and its lovely.

A lot of the songs mentioned on this thread make me cry.I have come to the conclusion that we women are soft and sentimental. No ham in that in fact can only be a good thing.
