Morning everyone!

I didn't make it in to the kitchen yesterday as my brother's only daughter had her first baby yesterday and I spent a lot of the day stopping him panicking. Then the baby had to stay in because he wasn't breathing properly and needed to have antibiotics. I feel like a piece of chewed string so goodness knows how the actual participants feel.

Wow kitty. Congratulations to all. Think you are allowed to feel chewed. Hope the little one is stronger this morning. Is he close to you geographically? Will you see him soon? for everyone.

Does that make you a great aunt kitty? Time to look out the silver topped ebony cane, the lace fichu thingy to go round your neck and practise speaking like Maggie Smith in Downton Abbey
Seriously, I hope all is now well with the little mite and that she and her mother are doing well. And that Grandad has got his BP back to normal.
Optometrist this morning, so what with hygienist earlier in the week, podiatrist next week and the dreaded mammogram the week after I feel like an old banger getting its MOT but in stages. Why do none of these things make me feel any better though? All a memento mori and reminder of the general state of dilapidation.

Good morning all, from a VERY weary Grampy and I.

Yesterday's pick up and drop offs were fine. Even putting the little chap to bed went well but we got up about 10 times last night as he wandered out of his room. On one occasion Grampy found him sitting on the bottom step with his teddies.

Very frustrating . We simply quietly put him back in his bed each time. At his house he gets up and goes into his parents room and they let him stay all night . That's just not happening here !! In his defence it was his first time in a big boys bed in his own room but boy we're tired this morning. , he on the other hand is full of beans .

Love all the different words for every day things. soop both my Mum and Nan would say ' buppy' it's like a little blast from the past hearing you mention it.

Daphne that is a keeper !! I totally understand how that raises a smile. I would keep it too .how little it takes to put a spring in our step eh?

Tonight , I'm going to a drive in movie. It was a gift from a young friend for my recent birthday. She gave me a large box of movie treats and tickets as I always wanted to try a drive in but never thought I would.

The downside is it doesn't actually start until 21:45 . Now I'm usually asleep not long after that and getting precious little sleep isn't going to help. So I feel an afternoon nap coming on .

I'm very excited ( both for the movie and the nap lol but maybe marginally more for the nap !! )

I do sympathise about the interrupted sleep N&G - compounded by the fact that they can hit the ground running at silly o clock.
I once found Toby sitting on the top stair disconsolately saying "I want a wee but I've lost the toilet" showed good intentions though. Pippa apparently hops out of her cot and curls up in the armchair in her room !!
When she was with us the last time getting out of the travel cot was still a novelty, but I still had to put the stair gate up as I was afraid she could turn left instead of right in the middle of the night. Enjoy your drive in movie -and TRY to keep awake!!

Daphne it sounds as though your life is becoming like mine going from optometrist to dentist to GP, finding time to fit in a hospital appointment and so it goes on. I would not have had the time when I was working full time.

Pippa sounds a delight to me, I also would cherish that call. Very soon Flynn will be doing the same.

It shows the sad life I lead, I am delighted to have found a local podiatrist who does home visits and I will not have to take out a mortgage.

N&G you are made of sterner stuff than I am- to get a night's sleep I would have invited the little mite into my bed. You must be kna****ed by now and it is only mid morning.

Wobblybits I am not suprised you felt bad after going cold turkey on co-codamol. The morphine in it is nasty stuff in any proportions and it is addictive.
I wonder if the packaging even mentions that it changes into morphine in the body.

soop Talking about strange names for bread, we always called the crust on the end of the loaf 'the nobby'. It was very challenging to eat, coming from what would now be called an artisan baker. Occasionally, my mum would find a cockroach in the bread but she would just take the loaf back and get a replacemental.

Cockroach in bread, yuk. But how about fish and chips ?

My father worked for a large bakery, they had a loaf returned that contained fish and chips, wrapping and all.
The night shift used to buy fish and chips for their lunch on the way into work. hey would take a fresh hot loaf, cut the end off, scoop out the middle and put the fish and chips inside to keep hot. This loaf ended up on the slicing and wrapping line and on to a customer.

It was a bit of a shock to realise that I became a great-great-aunt about 3 years ago - I have been wearing the lace fichu ever since, hope I don't need an ebony cane! I had to look again at my birth certificate to make sure that I qualified.

My H has a nephew not much younger than him and he and his wife are GGP so what that makes us I can't work out ( or want to think about) just makes me feel ancient.

wobblybits Loved your story about the fish and chips. My OH told me that he used to buy a cob loaf , pull the top off and stuff it with chips. Don't know how he got his mouth round it, mind.
elegran I went to Iceland in York today to see if they stock stovies. The assistant said that they didn't, but they do have regional specialities - like Yorkshire pudding!!!

I do like a chip buttie, although I don't think I've had one for years.

DH thinks it is a 'disgusting' way to eat!

Hello everyone, hope you don't mind me popping in. I occasionally lurk in that dark corner by the sink but just couldn't resist the stovies.

We had a scottish dad and yorkshire mum so maybe that accounts for the variation but our stovies were meatless. Various root vegetables were sliced thinly (but not too thin) and slowly cooked in a pan with a pinch of salt, small amount of water and tight-fitting lid. They were ready when the veg was just soft (not mushy) and no moisture was left in the pan - a bit like cooking rice.

I know money was very tight when we were young but I looked forward to stovies every week and still make it sometimes. I also taught my son when he was first living away from home and learning how to balance his own budget

NanaandGrampy Isn't it tough when you need to be single minded regarding your personal house rules. You will be feeling washed out right now. Have a zizz and prepare yourself for a late night drive in movie session. I've never experienced such a thing. It sounds exciting. Will you take popcorn and such?

oldgoat and Wobbly A cockroach in the bread! Fish and chips in the bread! MacSporran's latest loaf is a winner. He will keep returning to peer through the see-through window as it bakes. Every so often he tuts and says... it's not rising as it should. Well, that's because a loaf needs time.

Jalima I haven't enjoyed a chip butty in many years. My sister and I would buy the freshly baked bread from the local baker. By the time we returned home...it was a very sorry looking specimen.

The same village baker would also place the villagers Yorkshire pud mixes in his oven on a Sunday. My father would collect ours and walk along the street with a clean tea towel over the pudding. He also collected a jug of ale from the public house. The wireless would be on, and we'd listen to Wakey Wakey (Rise and Shine) and other programmes as we enjoyed the Sunday meal.

Thank you all for your good wishes. It sounds as though the birth was pretty rushed and my niece has a huge number of stitches. The baby is better but being kept in for observation. My sister in law was with them for the birth and hasn't slept since Friday with panic and adrenalin!! He was a healthy weight 8lb 2oz and is to be called Theodore (Teddy!) They live quite close (in fact in the same village as WB's daughter I think!) and all being well, I should get a cuddle next week.

I have been a great aunt for 26 years (shock)!!

What a lovely phone message from Pippa Daphne - they are never quite a lovely as that age are they.

Everyone's stories of non-sleeping DGC reminded me of the last time we had FOUR of them sharing a room - one wouldn't stay in bed and, when she eventually went to sleep, another one had diarrhoea which just about filled his ready bed! We took him out of bed, washed, changed and cuddled him and threw the ready bed away!!

I loved the one drive ins that I have been to NandG but it is necessary to stay awake.

I feel deprived as, not only have I not had stovies, I can no longer have chip butties because they taste dreadful with GF bread.

Anyway, I must go and sooth some more worried brows but I thought you'd like to wet the baby's head with some bubbles - so please enjoy.
