I'm fascinated by regional variations in the names of common objects. We called our gym shoes 'daps' in Gloucestershire but OH called his 'plimsols' in East Yorkshire. My Dad called his packed lunch his 'bait'. He was from Northumberland but here in Yorkshire it's your 'pack-up'.
Fish and chips is another one. I had never heard anybody ask for 'one of each, twice' til I came to York or 'a fish supper' in Scotland.

Just returned home from Campbeltown. Have a doctor's appointment at 3:00. You lot have been so busy and therefore I shall need to log on again when I get back home. You are amazing!

I know it is tempting fate but we have had the same upright freezer in our garage since 1970. It's OH's job to defrost it which he enjoys because he finds all sorts of forgotten treats which have been shoved to the back of the shelves. He's seen a new Beco model in JL but I'm reluctant to get rid of the old one while it is still working. We were surprised that only one of the freezers on sale were suitable for garages as the others can't function at low temperatures. Didn't know that!

Sometimes you have to poke something down the hole to clear it! [referring to fridges?freezers]

I've always heard bauchles as comfortable old shoes, a bit down-at-heel but still in use, and slippers as baffies.

Clearly I have an even smaller brain .....

and I have never heard of backles either Charleygirl although my Scottish friend knitted me a pair of 'baffies' which are very cosy (or hygge).

Somebody may correct me but backles(?spelling) was a name for slippers in Dundee. Working there in the early 60's was like working in a foreign country.

DaphneBroon 'Daps' are another name for plimsolls (pumps) where I live - just a thought iyswim

However, I can't do much for anyone at the moment, luckily littlest DGC has just started school.

We have one very old upright freezer that is supposedly self-defrosting. Last year it got so blocked up with ice (huge sheets of it on the top inside, so I had to take everything out, turn it off and apply a hairdrier then remove this large blocks of ice. Quite satisfying. Since then it has been fine so I don't know what went wrong with but I think the drainhole must have got blocked.
It will probably stop working again today.

I think the water from the freezer/fridge goes down a hole at the back inside and then into a tray thing, then evaporates. Life is much easier with a frost free freezer!

I have a self-defrosting fridge but am puzzled about where the water goes. I cleared it out a few weeks ago and found a few indescribable and unidentifiable relics but also some things that were still edible! Or drinkable. NanaandGranpy your schedule leaves me breathless. If I lived close to my family, I'd be able to do all that for them. Talking to my sister in NZ on the phone this morning, she was just like you, ferrying her GDs hither and thither and seemingly surviving. I really need to find more ways to get my bottom off its chair.
Just to contribute to the drugs theme: I am intolerant of all opioids like codeine and tramadol. Oddly enough, my son rang me one day and told me how bad he felt after taking a dose of his wife's tramadol, so it must run in the family. I can't take NSAIs either so that leaves me with paracetamol. I think I have quite a high pain threshold which is just as well.

When I had a freezer that wasn't frost free I always used to save the 'frosty stuff' when I de iced it. The children used to make mini snowmen with it.

I am sure there are at the least polar bears lurking in the back of our fridge Daphne so I wish you well on your expedition defrosting ! There is always an odd fish finger and a Brussel sprout lurking in our permafrost!!

There's not much of interest for me personally on the active threads at the moment so as I have a busy day ahead I shall leave my next browse until lunchtime.

I agree Ann there are lots of threads where I just thank my lucky stars that I'm not that poster and it does make me grateful for what I have . The one that always makes me sad is the one for divided families- so sad .

Its all go here today - we have to pick our 6 yr old grandson Stevie up after school 10 miles away, then come back and pick up Jackson and then take them swimming ( please, please let the boiler be fixed at the pool !!) . Then it will be snacks and soft play. Then dropping them off and collecting our 2 yr old grandson Cooper.

Each of our little ones is allowed to ask for their perfect sleepover with us and they all have very specific requirements. Apparently Cooper would like a packet of usually forbidden sweeties ( chewy ones)- only because when he has chewed enough he offers them to Sam , a packet of crisps and balloons. Then he wants 2 stories and for Grampy to put him to bed !!

I consider that getting off lightly

DB, thanks, pain relief meds are working.
I don't find I get any side effects from Co-codemol, it was only when I tried to stop them after 6 months that I had a problem.
Trouble is that if you read the leaflet about drugs first, you would never take anything.

I agree Daphne that we are a very diverse crew on GN and some things are so alien to our own lives that it does semm we are living in a parallel universe. I understood one poster this morning as I could relate whereas you couldn't. It is this diversity which makes us think and realise how hard/easy life is for others and sometimes makes us envious ( never jealous, that is a wasted emotion) and sometimes makes us count our blessings.
It is very early for me to be philosophical, I must go and have my delayed breakfast.

Skimming through GN this morning I feel I am in a parallel universe as there are threads/posts I just do not seem to be able to understand follow. Like Winnie the Pooh the bear of "very little brain" so I will content myself with a nice and wishing you and and get on with attacking the permafrost at the back of my (slowly) defrosting fridge.

I took co-codamol for 10 weeks. During that time, I felt dreadful - dry mouth, tired, listless, couldn't sleep, felt more and more depressed, and actually started having thoughts about how my life was utterly pointless and I should just give up (not quite suicidal, but pretty close). Then, one day I fell asleep for a nano second at the wheel of my car on the motorway. Luckily I was right on the slip road to a service station so had a nap there (actually a 3 hour sleep! ). I realised (finally) that something was wrong and had a look at the side effects of co-codamol - and there were all the nasty things which I had been experiencing. Wish I'd had the euphoria side-effect instead

Phooey, can't tolerate co-codamol. No hope for euphoria here then!

Iwas advised that after taking the maximum dose for 6 months, I should have taken about 6 weeks to slowly withdraw

I went from 8 per day to zero, not good.

I took the 30/500 for 6 weeks only at 8 a day and then only 2 at night and had no problems. Naproxen on its own did absolutely nothing for me. Still occasionally take one strong cocodamol at night when I have been on my feet a lot during the day.

There are 3 strengths of co-codomol the strongest is 30/500 and only on prescription, this is what I am taking. It is an opiate and converts to morphine in the liver. I took it for about 6 months when I had my knee replaced, no one told me about stopping it slowly, I just stopped. Within a couple of days I was in an awful state, stomach cramps, sweating, shaking. Went to Dr on day 3 told be informed that I should have taken 6 weeks to come off of it. But by that time I was at the worst point, the Dr gave mw something for the cramps, but it was not pleasant, after a week I started getting irritable leg syndrome, took about 3 weeks to get clear.

Sounds like some serious high and low jinks been going on here AND I've missed the cake !! I know you lot !

It's been a busy day here , pickling onions purchased ready for our Christmas pickles. Then a trip to Costco . Then a little crafting!

But tomorrow will be a doozie !

We have to pick up DGS2 then DGS3 , off to swimming, then dropping them off for a sleepover and picking up DGS4 for his sleepover at ours.

Whew !

So , I shall return if I survive :-) on Saturday !!
