Today we were just going to get in the car to go shopping when my next door neighbour asked about my DGS first day at grandparent / grandchild group.
I started to tell her how we had got on when DH decided to take up the story complete with embellishments.
He hadn't even been there
It was just DGS and myself.
Grr!

If an explanation is ever called for DH is incapable of just sticking to the truth. Not only will he come up with an untruth, but it will be something outlandish and complicated which will end up causing endless problems. It all just seems such hard work.

It's not just a man thing. My mother used to embellish stories so much that amongst the family they were referred to as LOOFAHs - Load of old fanny adams.

Or as my younger brother would say, 'Load of old f***ing a****oles.

I have one of those, bless him. Wouldn't tell home he does it because he wouldn't realise that he did. It's just part of being him

Rather a sweeping generalisation about men. I agree with merlotgran women are guilty of this too. How many times have I heard ' I am only a size 10 ' when clearly size 14 was nearer the mark . Boasting about children's achievements, my child was potty trained at 2 months etc.

When Men embellish the truth, what company are you with, is there a spare female about, I find that, that's the reason they show off.

As other posters have said us women are much better at:-
embellish the truth than most men.

Perhaps we all would like our lives to seem a little more exciting.

MY DH does the opposite and underplays everything and has to be heavily encouraged to talk in company. he says he thinks he hasn't got anything interesting to say which he has and I probably talk too much so he's balancing me out.

My DH doesn't exaggerate but he takes ages to tell the story with lots of tangents. I often wave my hand at him in a winding motion to indicate he needs to get to the end.

However, my friends' DH is an excellent storyteller and I love listening to his tales. He's Irish and tells them with a grin and twinkle in his eye. Very entertaining.

My OH is like Cherrytrees. He takes over what I am saying and goes off at a tangent.
I think he also has a version of "false memory syndrome." I don't think he embellishes stories to impress but he does talk some nonsense about things that have happened and getting the facts wrong.

Teetime I could have written your post word for word! We have a friend, though, who adds embellishments by the spade full, so that you don't know where truth ends and fantasy begins. He is larger than life, wonderful company and has us all in stitches, but we don't see him all that often which is probably just as well! His wife is very quiet.

We have a close friend (meeting her for lunch soon) who drives me nuts when she tells a story. She goes of in so many tangent, that I forget what she was originally telling us.

Teetime - same here ;) - he always laughs and say he doesn't have to talk as I talk for 2.

No DH doesn't do this but I have a female friend who seems to forget I have known her forever and know the truth. I think it must be insecurity.

DH seems to go all around the houses before getting to the point, if in fact he ever finds it. I will be talking about such and such but he goes off on a tangent which is only loosely related and totally misses the point. We then have a bizarre conversation trying to get back to what it was all about in the first place!

nellie Mr C also has this sort of false memory syndrome. I worried it was the beginning of the dreaded dementia, now don't think so. With him it's more that he doesn't take enough notice at the time and then re-tells the scenario he has in his head. Can be both confusing and irritating in equal parts. Good job he has many redeeming factors .

nope it's not to impress women. Its when he's with men. Old war hero stories I suppose. He's not an out and out lier just exaggerates the story. Mostly it makes the story funny/interesting but then he gets carried away and takes it too far. perhaps it's his boyhood imagination getting the better of him ( all that hi ho silver) stuff he saw in the cinema in the early 60's that's to blame

My OH does tend to make a bit of a meal of things. He has just spent a couple of hours (unbeknownst to me) measuring a house wall on which we plan to put two hanging baskets. He has given up in exasperation as he has "failed to do the maths right" - he was horrified when I suggested that I would just point to the two places I would like them to go and we would just stick them up! Silly me!

My DH is one of those people who believe that if you don't have anything worth saying, don't say anything at all. He is one of the most sensible people I know and keeps me grounded.
