I saw a Gorgous thick cotton crochet type winter pull on hat , perfect with the wraps I wear so bought it,

I did not expect to look like the female modelling it, long fair hair etc, but how come I look like Benny Hill ?

Me too granny activist, when I wear a scarf round my neck, people ask if I've got a stiff neck, !!!!

I love hats and am always happy to wear one, but like DanniRae I cannot make a scarf look elegant on me. My two closest friends wear all sorts of scarves wonderfully well, but try as I might I just can't get the 'drape' to look as easy and natural as they can - I've even followed tutorials on youtube without any noticeable improvement.

Why is it that the beautiful Audrey Hepburn can whizz round in a lovely red sports wearing a silk head scarf with such panache.
and I on the other hand could with an elegantly tied silk scarf climb into wishful thinking a beautiful Morgan and look like I'm only missing Hilda's curlers!

I wear a hat in the winter, I look like I've escaped from somewhere and don't care. My hair is so fine and slippery I usually end up looking like I've got a large knob on my head where the hat slides up. No type of hat suits me, my mother and I used to go into Debenhams and try on ladies posh hats and giggle hysterically, I was 17 she was 45 at the time, lord I used to have so much fun with my mum!

i wear a black fedora in the winter when it's raining. as i walk with a stick i can't manage stick, handbag and umbrella so the fedora keeps my hair dry. it's got a lovely biggish brim which is just right.
in the summer i wear a "cowboy" type hat which i found in asda a couple of years ago - big enough brim to keep the sun out of my eyes as prescribed by the optician.
other than these i don't wear hats as i don't suit them - although i still have three wedding hats in my wardrobe plus a fascinator.

Hats sizing so sexist! Can anyone explain why men's hats come in a plethora of different sizes while women's generally come in take it or leave it?

I think it's the hair that makes a difference. Long hair with a long fringe means some hair will usually show to soften the face when you wear a hat. (Leaving aside the fact that a pretty, youthful face looks good in anything or nothing!) I have short hair so I just don't look in the mirror if I'm going out with my dog in the winter. It's much more comfortable to keep your head warm. You can give post-hat hair a quick blast with the hairdryer on hot then cold if your dryer has those settings. Bend over so your head's upside down and blast away. That will usually perk things up.

Wilma what is it with these men??

hildajenniJ Fri 23-Sept-16 14:36:16

I have a small round face, and probably a head to match. I would love to wear a hat, and those lovely floaty scarves, but I just look silly.

WilmaKnickersfit Fri 23-Sept-16 14:18:09

DH says I look like the village idiot in a hat.

Greyduster Fri 23-Sept-16 14:06:40

grin

Barmyoldbat Fri 23-Sept-16 13:30:57

I am with Anniebach on this one, I do the same but also avoid looking in the mirror!

Elegran Fri 23-Sept-16 13:26:41

I thought you looked like a different actress, Stephanie Cole - she played a doctor in Tenko, and later an eccentric aunt to Martin Clunes in Doc Martin.

Greyduster Fri 23-Sept-16 13:19:27

Gosh, I should be so lucky!!

Anniebach Fri 23-Sept-16 12:22:25

Greyduster, you look very Penelope Keith, very country set, lovely

pollyperkins Fri 23-Sept-16 11:31:38

Jane10 I wore a black feather fascinator to a wedding and was ragee pleased with tg effect as I dont do hats. That is until my H told me I looked as if a crow had crashed into the side of my head!

Greyduster Fri 23-Sept-16 11:27:50

'Here' !!

Greyduster Fri 23-Sept-16 11:26:53

Last time I went fishing - the one time I do wear a hat because it's a better idea to get a hook stuck in your hat than your scalp - DH said to me "that hat makes you look old". I told him I am old, but I was considerably put out by the remark. He is the offending hat!

wot Fri 23-Sept-16 11:26:33

hooty, you could wear fluffy earmuffs

Anniebach Fri 23-Sept-16 11:23:44

Not one of you can beat this for the title - plonker in a hat.

In my late teens a very elderly lady in the village decided to clear her wardrobe and brought a bag of her clothes and hats to our house as a thank you for my Dad cutting firewood for her.

One of my sisters dared me to wear some things so I went to church in a thirties brown felt hat and a red boa , my mother spent the entire service giving my the most unchristian of glares

the lady said she was thrilled her gifts were appreciated !

MiniMouse Fri 23-Sept-16 10:48:20

Hats are not user-friendly for me. I just look like a mushroom with a very short stalk!

Jane10 Fri 23-Sept-16 10:34:13

I compromised for DD's wedding and wore a fascinator. I looked like a Martian with an aerial sticking out of my head. Och!

HootyMcOwlface Fri 23-Sept-16 10:20:14

We dressed up at work for something or other, and my costume had a hat. I got fed up of it by about 10 o'clock and took it off, but when I saw my hair in a mirror I nearly died. It was flat as a pancake and stuck to my head so I had to wear the flaming hat all day! Why do hats make my hair greasy?! I would love to wear a woolly hat in the winter, I get earache with the cold or wind, but I just dare not risk it! I have to have a coat with a hood!

DanniRae Fri 23-Sept-16 10:14:56

I wish I could 'do' scarves - I'm fine with woolly ones when it's cold but can never get the elegant type right. I see other women with their beautiful scarves wrapped 'carelessly' around their necks, try and copy but land up feeling daft and take it off pretty quick. I guess I am not the elegant type?? hmm

BlueBelle Fri 23-Sept-16 10:12:24

I can't wear hats, I d like to, but I look like worzal gummidge it must be my head, because others look great in them and I d like to wear one I have tried everything from a big hat to a benny they all make me look awful
