How come ?

I was browsing the M&S website for a pair of jeans and noticed that the small print said that the model (who looked amazing of course) was 5ft 11ins and a size 8! Who the hell (apart from said model) is anywhere near those dimensions??

Don't retailers think that we as customers need to have an idea in advance what WE are going to look like - not what their product looks like on some skinny 23 year old beanpole.

I can't wear hats I look so silly in them always envied ladies at weddings who could wear lovely hats, think I could get away with a ( not sure about the spelling) fasinater.

My first question when invited to a wedding is 'must I wear a hat?' - I always feel so foolish (although I do enjoy trying them on in private).

I've got stacks of lovely scarves which I've been given but can never make them look good. I've also got several pashminas from Tunisia which I don't have any problem with. I have a few hats in my hatbox and at my granddaughter's wedding last September I wore the one which had had its previous outing at her aunt's wedding almost 25 years ago (I hope she never sees the photos of her aunt's wedding)! Going to the shops in winter I really don't care what I look like and usually wear a woolly hat with ear-flaps.

I think the way forward is to wear what you like and don't look in the mirror, it works for me!

Why do I never look as good as the models in the clothing I buy . I know I'm older, fatter, wrinklier etc but still ....... I have a friend who looks wonderful in whatever she wears, a lot of her clothes are quite old sorry classic but she looks so elegant. I swear she could wear a bin bag and look great.

Hats, all of them, just make me look like a bag lady ? I do wear a woolly hat in the winter when dog walking leaving me with hair plastered flat to my head! Yuk.

Some great posts - made me laugh out loud, thanks for brightening up a grey day! I look awful in hats both casual and formal, but have been to 2 weddings and worn fascinators, which made me feel nice and wedding-like, felt ok and THINk I looked ok.

I suit two styles of hat, big flamboyant feathered 'wedding' creations, and cowboy hats!
Obviously there are precious few occasions to wear enormous 'posh' hats, but I have a few of the cowboy variety.
I have four 'Stetson' hats, one in dark brown, but the other three are black (film baddie hats!).
I started off with cheapy cowboy style hats, but bought a real 'Stetson' in New York in 2008 and have been hooked ever since. The latest is a black 'Hondo Vitafelt', crushable, water resistant and just gorgeous!
Even though technically they're made for men, they suit me, they keep me warm and dry and I love them!
If I put a wooly hat on, I look as though I'm wearing a tea cosy, so cowboy hats are here to stay!

Annie perhaps you could try a snazzy brooch or bright crocheted flower on the side of it.

I had one that sounds similar, it was a loose knit one. I looked a right wally in mine but the DD both liked it and both looked fabulous in it.
They were upset when I threw it out.

The throws etc sound stylish though, must try again.

That's the worst thing. You think you look good and have finally cracked it - then someone bursts your bubble and you never wear it again. On the few occasions that I have worn a hat (Ascot), the carefully chosen hat got precisely one wear.

Perhaps the secret is to never look in the mirror or at photos? Ignorance is bliss?

Mind you, I have many happy memories of me and my Mum trying on hats in BHS and killing ourselves laughing!

Jalima, I am tall and skinny so not the same shape as Benny Hill but just as silly in the pull on hat , didn't help I bought a grey one so difficult to see where hat ends and hair shows. Anyway I look a wally I assure you.

What a relief - thought I was the only one who could not wear a hat and a ) look good and b) feel comfortable. I am with Tudorrose: wearing specs seems to preclude the attractive wearing of a hat and , on the odd occasion in winter when I have tried, after a short while the hat presses into the spectacle arm and is most uncomfortable. Hoods on coats/ anoraks are impossible - either blow off or come so far forward feel like a blinkered horse.
Did manage a large hat for my wedding and that of my grandson by wearing one contact lens - that way only ended up with one sore eye and could see relatively clearly.

Starting to "get there" with scarves as living in France I have excellent models as the ladies around here wear scarves with such elegance and panache .

In the 90s I wore a lovely expensive chocolate brown velvet hat - it was floppy but structured, with a brim and perfect with my long winter coat and boots.

In today's parlance I was channeling a 'Diane Keaton in New York' look.

A male colleague said I looked like Paddington Bear!

I wish I'd watched that video before I spent ages on Monday agonising about whether to wear a scarf when I went out on Tuesday. I tried all sorts of ways to get. It to look right. Then I thought " who the heck is going to be taking any notice anyway" and just gave in and wound it loosely round my neck.

I look horrendous in hats. My daughter on the other hand always looks lovely in any hat she wears, and we are always being told that we look alike so how come she looks so good and I don't??
I was watching Joanna Lumley's documentary about her visit to China and she was wearing a gorgeous black hat and looked so chic. I would look like a bag lady if I wore it.
What IS the secret of hat-wearing?

I once went to a wedding, took my hat off in the cloakroom, saw terrible hat hair! Stuck head under tap and dried it under hand dryer! Worked a treat. Can't do it with those Dyson ones you put your hands in though!Sounds like there is a a niche in the market for a hat hair remedy kit.

i'm new to posting but have been reading for quite some time.thankyou all who posted you have given me such a laugh with this topic ....really cheered my day....I can't wear hats ....look horrendous in every type so have given up trying

Jalima sadly I don't look like her either! Actually, if you follow the other videos on the YouTube page, she shows you what size and shape of scarf works best for certain looks. That helped me quite a bit.
