Anybody else glad it's Autumn?

Just a couple of weeks more and a bit of last minute garden tidy then I'll hibernate. What have the next few months to offer but dark nights, cold temperatures, sometimes hazardous underfoot and huge heating bills. Ugh big time! Roll on next March. Good luck to all those who enjoy the aforementioned though.

I love autumn because everything slows down in the garden so there's time to catch up and plan next year. I tend to go off gardening in August because of the heat and everything looking tired. Autumn flowering plants are a real mood lifter.

Our autumns seem to be getting milder and longer so anything that shortens winter is OK by me.

There are things I like about every season such paddling pools with grandchildren, blossom and primroses, golden trees, crunchy snow and crackling fires, just like the stages in my life e.g. childhood, teenage years, university, early marriage, children, work, retirement - I try to enjoy everything.

No. It means the first will soon be here to kill off my dahlias

I like winter as well, all the cosiness, the thick sweaters, cold outside, warm inside, curtains drawn, stove lit, love the long dark evenings, hot soup, winter casseroles - and that is without even thinking of Christmas.

No. My local supermarket has stopped stocking all my favourite ice creams because they are 'out of season'. Favourite ice creams are never out of season

Noooooo! Not wishing my life away but roll on Spring, I hate winter feel the cold terribly and hate the long dark nights. Think I was born in the wrong country.

Love Autumn. My favourite season, all,those beautiful colours and misty days. Defiantly "season of mists and mellow fruitfulness". I know we have winter to come but that has its compensations and then Spring will be here before you know it.

I loathe Autumn- everything dying!It is so depressing.
I am still in white cotton skirts & sandals & certainly no sleeves yet! It is so humid out there.
I am hanging on to my tan as long as possible & never go into trousers until end of October unless it gets very cold. The duvet can stay in the airing cupboard a few weeks yet too. A sheet & a thin cotton cover is ample.
When the clocks go back I always get very sad. I hate drawing the curtains in the evening.
I am just living for next Spring again. I quite like Christmas & the odd bit of snow but this transition period is awful.
It's nice to know it makes some of us happy though- I think I need to get down to travel agents & book a very hot holiday for next year to cheer me up!

I love all the seasons, late spring early summer is my favourite. What I don't love is the way that some years all the seasons merge into one where every day is dull, cool and wet. This year started out that way then got its act together and by July we started to enjoy summer.
The one thing I hate about this time of the year is the thought of switching the heating on and the higher energy bills.

I find Autumn so incredibly depressing, I am in the 'Autumn of my life' and it reminds me that I don't have an infinite amount of time left when we are fit enough to get out and enjoy life. The sun going down so early, making driving in the afternoon a dangerous squinting experience, no sitting out on the patio or summerhouse with a glass of wine in the evenings, cold misty mornings, and fighting over putting the heating on, I hate it!

At least December onwards sees Christmas coming, meeting up with friends at related events, family coming home, New Year breaks, and then January with bulbs starting to appear reminding me I have another year ahead of me. May is my all time favourite month, so much to look forward to!

Heat I can stand but not the humidity. The time is approaching for mellow fruitfulness which I much prefer.

I'm not glad either, trying to think about all the positive things that it brings but I much prefer spring & summer.

When I lived in England I would say I loved the Autumn, but really it was only those very few days of crisp air, sunshine, walks and wonderful colours. Most of the time it was dull and grey. I love Christmas so the run up saved my soul. It's after Christmas that I hate until the Spring arrives. I love the summer.

The answer? Move to South West France. We live in the poorest departement (Ariege) it is so far unspoilt and uncrowded, and BIG bonus is the long Autumns when it is usually warm and balmy until late November. I can swim in our unheated pool until mid October (OK a bit chilly but refreshing) and we still have BBQs and eat out during the day time. The wood burning stove usually goes on in the evenings from late September but I can cope with that. Other big pluses - even in December it doesn't get dark until 6pm, skies are usually blue and clear, with sunshine throughout most of the Autumn and Winter. The leaves start turning wonderful colours at the end of November, then the nights really start getting cold, and then the days too, but it's a dry cold. I love it all.

After a long very hot summer, and now an exceptionally hot September the cooler (26 degrees) is welcome.

I love Autumn - it can be warm enough to go out without your cardi and not cold enough to snow. I don't like Winter at all, but Autumn is a nice calm, soothing month with Summer gradually fading away. The crisp, sunny Autumn days are the best but these past few days have been dull and a bit depressing. I'm glad however not to feel hot and uncomfortable all the time, need to wear Summer vest but worrying about my bingo wings. Hating the looking of my lily white legs in shorts or cropped trousers and meaning to fake tan but never quite getting round to it. My ugly feet don't need to be exposed in sandles and I don't need to drive around with the car window open just to get some air.

I love all the seasons and have something to look forward to in each of them. September is my mother's birthday month and in October I am 60 and am having a milestone birthday party.

I prefer it to be sunny and dry as light levels affect me greatly but there is no doubt that autumn is a beautiful season and even winter gives us Christmas to look forward to.

It might be something to do with being a (now retired) teacher and living life by cycles of terms that September is both the closing of the summer but also the beginning of the new school year and filled with forward looking thoughts.

November and January are tricky, though, and they are mostly months to 'get through' rather than enjoy.

Yes I absolutely adore autumn too. I love the yellows, reds and browns, the mists and mellow fruitfulness and the way the countryside smells at this time of year. I also feel very connected to the past in and around September - must be the pagan in me, but harvest always reminds me of times gone by... and the rhythm of life.

Autumn has always been my favourite season-the reds and golds of the leaves turning is stunning.It's strange because I feel the cold so much and know winter is approaching yet there is just something magical about the earth settling itself down to rejuvenate again in Spring.A watery sun glimpsed through strands of mist across a field is a glory to lift the spirits. Even the dark evenings have their advantages-shut out the world,snuggle up with a hot drink and a good book,bliss!

I like September too. Perversely I can actually keep my curtains open longer as in the summer the sun shines straight into my living room and it is like a greenhouse when it gets hot so I often have to close the curtains.
I can also cover up my bulges which are never in the right place.

Yes, yes, yes. No more fake tans, sleeping better at night and cuddling hot water bottle in front of TV. Bliss

I like early autumn on days like this - blue skies, leaves just turning, a still sea. But yesterday, with grey skies and pouring rain...still that could be a summers day too!

I need semi sensible lightweight walking boots - suggestions please?

I'm just so pleased it has stayed dry and fairly warm while my son is here from his winter months in NZ. He arrived when London was 30F, so quite a contrast to what he had been experiencing in NZ. But I am sure he will be pleased to return to his family next Tuesday.

Yes Falconbird how I agree with you. There has been a heatwave here temperatures of 35 degrees for a time, I hate it. Like you I can keep warm but not cool. Love the changing colours of autumn and lovely cool walks with the dogs. I like winter too, curl up with a book and enjoy the peace.

I love all of our differing weather but if I had to choose it would be Summer I hate the fact all the leaves are dropping and I have to put garden furniture away. I just love the long Summer days and warm nights .
