Ive just seen a piece on the news about a house fire. A woman and her children had lost everything , including those precious family photos and momentos, all due to a burning candle being left alone . The emphasis quite rightly was levelled at the danger of leaving lit candles. Nothing about the fact that she didnt have contents insurance . So now the woman has to make do with bits and bobs donated by family members. When I moved into my first flat, my father insisted I take out contents insurance . He said don't ever think it can't happen to you. And it did, in 2007 . I came home from work to see firemen trying to put out an inferno in the flat above mine. I was lucky. My flat suffered water damage so the floors and most of my furniture was damaged. All my family photos (some of which are over 100 years old) , my collection of books, my family treasures were all safe.. Most of all no people or animals were hurt.
I had both buildings and contents insurance . As both flats needed restoring and renovation I had to live in rental accommodation, all paid for by my policies . It gives me nightmares to think what I would have done without it. I'm pleased to say this also taught my grown up children to have life, contents and buildings insurance . As Dad said ' you must always afford insurance'.
