And I like fruit loaf too. Both have green labels so feel quite virtuous.
So far, so good. . . .

I used to bake when my sons were young and always made the Christmas cake but haven't done so for years now. I sometimes fancy a bit of cake and look at them in the supermarket but if we buy them it generally gets thrown out. I do make exceedingly good cheese scones but again they end up in the bin once they're a day or so old. Why do shop bought cheese scones have sugar in them - horrid

I have a good friend who has the belief that anything beginning in C is allowed is cake chocolate etc and darn her she is slim and an agile 80 year old while I am 70 years very overweight even though I have had a gastric band and eat very little. No justice in this world?

I had visitors yesterday and as I am not up to standing baking, to go with a cup of tea in the afternoon I bought a Victoria sponge from M&S. It was £2:75 and was delicious. The added bonus was that just now a donation is made to McMillan nurses for each one sold.

Benecol spread is very healthy stuff. You can tell it's doing you good, 'cos it tastes 'orrible!

You could make cakes with healthy oils, it works well with cakes made from veggies eg carrot, courgette, beetroot or with bananas which have the added bonus of not needing so much sugar.

Well, today, I did really well. Got past the 4 o'clock munchies because was too busy.
Dashed off to choir (find it easy to resist biscuits there somehow) but got home and then. . . . Felt hungry (tea, or whatever you call your evening meal! Was early) so had a bowl of muesli.
Now am about to catch up on Victoria so I have a cup of (light) chocolate and a brunch bar. . . . Hopeless but could be worse.

I cook a lot but I never bake cakes or biscuits because I know I would eat them
I buy the odd cup cake and my cupboard has biscuits in it

Just read about your cake and cholesterol problem Newquay. I had the same last year but lowered my cholesterol by changing my diet . The occasional slice of cake did pass my lips? ? ?.
I think what really helped was Benecol Cholesterol Lowering Yoghurts, high in plant stanols.Benecol Spread.Soyamilk .Lots of unsalted nuts and porridge.
Tesco have their own brand of the yoghurt which is less expensive.Lots of veg,fruit and salads,good luck,you can do it .

I expect like me you make your own cakes, but try not to make to many and keep them simple, if you go online there are some cooks who make cakes without sugar and substitute something else.
It's hard though I have high c so have to be strict.

I have just got in after playing in a bowls gala day and have had the most sumptuous afternoon tea with lots of lovely homemade cakes to eat. There WAS a healthy option of fruit skewers and when offered one i said no, I want to eat Cake!!!!
How could i refuse after so many ladies had spent so much time effort and money on baking coffee and walnut, fruit cake, lemon drizzle, scones with cream and jam and frangipan tart-lets,plus the beautiful sandwiches. That is it for this week though i have indulged and will not enjoy that kind of food for a long time.

I have stopped making and eating cake because of puttin g on weight. I now make a fruit loaf and try not to put much butter on it.

Cake-a-holics unite I say. It's light, it's delicious, it goes well with a cup of tea or coffee, you can have a small slice, a medium slice or a huge slice (yes it's SO versatile). You can make it yourself or buy some, there are so many different types to choose from. You can buy small individual ones or huge ones for sharing, it tastes MUCH better than a piece of haddock.
The only down side is that it can give you a fat bottom, high cholesterol and diabetes !

Hi, I also love cake, and at a christening many years ago,babies grandmother bought 5 assorted home made cakes, and I couldn't resist having a piece of everyone.What a glutton ! I rarely buy them now, because I know I will eat the lot.

I am Type 2 Diabetic & last time Cholesterol was checked it was high but I also have a blood abnormality at the moment so not too worried. I love Cream Teas - living in Devon that tends to be a once a month treat. I do love savoury things & eat lots of fruit - unfortunately I love ice cream or cream on both bananas & strawberries. Sometimes treat myself to a nice cake but try to buy only individual ones & one at a time!

When asked to make a cake why not suggest making cheese scones. They lower your sugar intake and give diabetics something they can eat on these occasions.
Also when grocery shopping read the labels. See how much sugar is included in each 100grams of items savoury and sweet. Then buy the one that has the least grams of sugar per 100 grams. It will help you to lessen your sweet tooth.

I was once hypnotised to deal with my cake problem. Was asked to visualise a cake which I did, a chocolate eclair. Have not eaten an eclair since. Everything else, but not an eclair. Shall we call that a partial result?
