I usually try to pick threads carefully, but you can ask a perfectly innocent question on a contentious thread and get a nasty answer from certain posters. Usually the same ones.
Well, I am not going anywhere because one or two deliberately misinterpret posts and think they are the only kind and compassionate people on here.

peaceatlast it's a pity, really, but there are some fun or interesting threads if you choose carefully

I think we have all killed threads at one time or another - or thought we had. It does feel as though everyone has left the room in disgust, but really it is just that the thread has come to a natural end, nothing much more to be said and something new on another thread has caught everyone's eye.

Glad to know that other people don't like it when they kill a thread. It happened to me on a Good Morning Tuesday (for example). I said "Good Morning from South London etc" and NOTHING. I thought well I'm never posting on there again - now I realise it was nothing personal I was just being over sensitive. I also try to never post if I think I will be 'jumped on' - same reason. BUT I am so glad I discovered Gransnet -I love all the helpful advice, funny posts etc and always look forward to getting up to date each morning.

I don't even have crafts. Too lazy, can't be arsed, or don't see the point.

Definitely want to run away sometimes. But we'd take it all with us.

angiebaby Sorry to hear you have had a bad time. All you can do is pick yourself up, dust yourself down and start all over again! Are you on any crafts forums? You'll get chat in those, as well as hints and links. Do you sell your crafts? If you do, or if you want to buy handmade things from other people (definitely not the same as home-made, that has a quite different ring to it) then look on Folksy or [[Etsy ink{https://www.etsy.com/uk/\www.etsy.com/uk]]/} hundreds of thousands of things for sale, by thousands of small craftworkers.

(Ummmmm - don't take this the wrong way, but I find that your posts can be very tiring and breathless to read. It is the ,,,,,patches of commas,,,,,,,,,,,rather jumpy bits of text,,,,,,,no connections,,,,all following on,,,,,no breaks,,,,,,,no paragraphs,,,,,all one block without punctuation,,,,,,,,pauses for breath,,,,,,,takes some concentration to read.

Why not just put a full stop to one sentence and start another? And use the Enter key from time to time to chop it up into paragraphs? Sorry if I sound like an English teacher, but if it is hard going to work it out and understand, then fewer people will read and reply.)

There are some topics on GN that I avoid. Sometimes I am tempted onto them when I read a post, but I usually regret it - why volunteer to have your blood pressure raised? There are posters who seem to be adrenaline junkies, and opposition just adds to the fix. On the other hand, sometimes there is something useful to say (or something that is just asking to be said).

You have to choose your threads. No different from real life - there are people you don't choose to interact with, and battles you don't choose to take on. Each poster has their own view, and their own level of involvement.

In a previous incarnation I left GN - not in a strop - but because I hated the descent into playground politics and, a lot of the time, the way some posters appeared to be being hounded almost. Not me, I might add. I was sometimes castigated and widely ignored, but it wasn't that which bothered me - just the prevailing atmosphere at the time. I came creeping back two years later, to a much better atmosphere, having spent most of my forum time on an almost all male site connected with my favourite pastime. If you think women can be nasty to each other, you don't know the half of it when blokes get going. But in among the vitriol was a lot of laugh out loud humour, support and very good advice (like GN!). I don't contribute to that forum much anymore but I still stay around because I learn a lot. I suppose what I'm trying to say is that you should expect mixed responses from any forum. Don't expect too much and you won't be disappointed.

I think GN is like a lot of things in life - you have to stick it out for quite a while to find out if it suits you or not.

As for saying good post to other posters; I have done that, meaning that I was probably thinking the same but didn't express it as well

If a thread is argumentative and you don't like it you can always retreat, either for a while or altogether. There are lots of threads that aren't so contentious.

Just accept the site as it is.

I'd like to say I've lost count of the threads I've managed to polish off but I haven't bothered counting them.
