Autumn weather beginning. . . Oh no! That means spiders will be coming in. . . .

Yes, I'm scared of daddy-long-legs, too, When. Hate 'em, drifting around uncontrollably. Ugh!
cazza - I'll try that, splitting the conkers. It makes sense when you think about it.

Another thing that autumn brings is daddy-long-legses (or should that be daddies-long-legs?). I hate the way they zoom around too fast for you to get them with a handy newspaper, and am convinced that they want to sit on me. Yuck.

They do say that you have to put a hole in the conkers or split them open for them to work properly, they work for me.

I'm going upstairs to shut the bedroom window ^right now!

In bed this morning reading and feel a tickle by my side move a little and there is a spider on my pillow ewwwwww!! leap out of bed while OH is moving across the room away, and I'm carrying the pillow to the open window to tip it out but that spider is a speedy beggar and I have to keep turning the blasted pillow to stop it dropping off... then out the window it goes and we can get back in bed to finish our tea...
Its the problem with having windows open all the time I guess..

Oh, I'm so glad it's not just me. I'm absolutely terrified of those big brown ones, less so with the small ones and the skinny ones. Thank goodness DH is good at catching them in a tissue and putting them outside. I just dread going upstairs to bed in the Autumn as there is usually a monster waiting for me in either the bedroom or the bathroom. I don't find conkers work, either. If I am on my own and a stray one appears the most I can do is to put a large drinking glass over it and leave it there for DH's return. There's no way I could do the trick with the cardboard. I never leave my handbag open on the floor at this time of year as I once spotted a large hairy spider climbing out of one I'd left by the dressing table. That was nearly forty years ago and I've never got over the shock.

I have heard that hypnotherapy can cure this phobia but the cure might be worse than the phobia. Has anyone tried it?

I've not heard of using conkers ! Don't think there are any in my neighbourhood.

I used to be phobic regarding spiders, even minuscule ones. Africa cured me with unavoidable 'immersion ' therapy and I have no problems these days and actually find them fascinating. A tip that may help. They are not keen on the aroma from conkers apparently. In my phobic days the house positively rattled with them around Windows and skirting boards.

Hope I don't pong too much today ! As I turned on the shower this am a HUGE one ran over my foot . I never kill them , if you do it rains for days . I hopped out and made a bridge for him to climb out , but by this time it was too late to shower as I heard the carers in for OH

I've got a little spider to the side of me, on the wall, I've named him Robbie (Robert the Bruce). He is quite cute. My mother always freaked out at seeing a spider and took great delight in scaring my children too. I am quite the opposite and grab any insect that comes in to put it back out of the window. Even my 6ft 4in son won't do that!

I used to be a bit scared of spiders when I was young but I've got over that and I LIKE them now. I'm still not that keen on picking them up if they are big but, unfortunately for my visitors I only remove webs when they look awful,being very careful not to suck up the spider as I go. I must admit to destroying the egg nests(not sure what they are called) when I find them. You can too much of a good thing!

I've started to scan walls and floors before I enter. My daughter says a mint oil mixed with water sprayed along the edges everywhere works well .

Our last house, being on the edge of a wood, was full of spiders particularly in the autumn. One day I was standing washing my face at the bathroom sink and I felt a really tickly sensation so I opened one eye to look and found myself eye to eye with a big spider sitting in the bubbles on my face. Needless to say I was somewhat freaked out by this. DH says I screamed my head off, but I am very glad to say that whatever happened at least it didn't drop into my mouth!

Yes, me too! My subconscious thinks the thing can somehow get through the container and run up my arm...I know it's illogical

The thing is, if you cover the thing with a transparent cover-and I understand the logic!-if the blooming thing moves, that's me done for!
I get the shivers just thinking about it?

We've had a few visits from Boris and his cousin Sammy recently. They don't bother me but I do know how scary other people can find them. Back when I shared a bedroom with my sister we kept a typewriter ribbon container (yes, that long ago!) in the room for me to catch any intruders so she could safely go to sleep.

Urgh.
There was a MASSIVE one on my t-shirt which was hanging up to dry the other day.
Fortunately my grandson happily picked it up and put it in the garden

I use conkers every year and they work in my house we never get them indoors once the conkers are in place. As its not conker season yet I have yet to put them round the house which is why our first huge spider appeared last night scampering across the living room and while OH jumped up and ran I got a glass and cardboard and dealt with the beastie.

You don't have to get that close, Ana, but you could use something deeper. As you can see the spider at all times you feel more in control than if you use an opaque container, and if you get nervous all of a sudden, a plastic pot doesn't break as a glass might
