Horror of Horrors It is that time of year again, and the rain makes it all the more likely. Picture the scene: Hubby just gone off to bed. I popped to wash up cups etc from supper, coming back to the sitting room I spied it in the dim light from the lamp..HUGE, brown and eight legged sitting very close to where my bare feet had been not five mins earlier!!. I flew into the kitchen and grabbed a big bowl, almost threw it over the top of it, then ran to get Hubby who had gotten as far as removing his trousers. So..He is on his knees sliding a magazine under the bowl, We then realised he couldn't lift it as the magazine was a bit floppy, so he had to drag it slowly on his knees whilst holding the bowl firmly on top, right accross the sitting room, out into the kitchen and to the back door, then came the tricky bit( All this was not helped by me jigging around and shouting " For God's sakes DO NOT let it escape. He reached to door, and somehow managed to eject magazine, eight legged creature( Cannot type the word) ugh, and the bowl out through the doorand onto the path, it took off at about 100 miles an hour phew. Hubby heads back to the bedroom!! Until I informed him we needed to move all the furniture out to check it had not left a friend behind. I didn't see anything but I am VERY nervous. I have all sorts of things in here that THEY are supposed not to like, and still it invaded. Why is it we never see them actually coming in??
I know it isn't logical to feel this way, I know they don't hurt, but I am terrified, and they make me actually feel ill. I hope I get a good sleep after this but I doubt it 
Hi Falcon yes I'm pretty sure it was a spider bite and it wasn't a BIG spider (if that was the culprit) it was only small....but my dad says that ants and ladybirds can bite! not sure about that though 
Interesting point Biker. Do spiders bite? I lived in a big old house and the attic next door was cleared out resulting in all the big black' orrible spiders coming into our house.
I frequently had v shaped marks on my legs and arms. like fang bites and so did my little boy. They didn't hurt in any way but they did look like bites.

I was bitten by a small spider a few years ago (presume it was that is I found it squashed near me) it bit my knuckle which swelled up to about the size of half a gold ball, I had to go home from the caravan and to the docs..as the poison was tracking up my arm and was almost at my elbow. the doc drew a line where it was and said if it goes any further to go to A n E I had to take anti biotics.
I don't mind spiders I just don't wan them running over me and I certainly don't want to be eating one during the night when Im led there with mouth wide open
About 4 days ago I found what looked like a daddy long legs, but on closer inspection I saw it was carrying something, I rung DD who said it was a cellar spider and it was carrying this little grey sack which contained eggs!! I put it outside (by the way I dont have a cellar) yuk"'
I don't mind spiders at all and will happily pick them up and relocate outdoors but when in Australia each year I do have to remember not to do that... If I came face to whisker with a mouse or rat I would be off up the road as fast as my legs would carry me; I am just not very good with anything on 4 legs with a long tail which is smaller than a large dog 
I have heard all sorts of things to put them off, I have seen one sitting on top of a conker though:-( I hear Lavender is another one. We have a Lavender hedge and I pick heaps of it and have it in dishes all over the house, even if it doesn't work it smells lovely. Someone on here suggested Lemons cut in half and I am going to get a few when I go to Supermarket tomorrow. I will also try that thing Shysal suggested. Hey I would dance naked in the moonlight if I thought that would work, but that will probably just drive the neighbours away 
DiL told me two years ago that conkers placed in the corners of rooms keep spiders away. Didn't believe it but gave it a try to please her and guess what? I've only seen one spider indoors since then
No problem with spiders personally "If you wish to live and thrive, let the spider run alive". Now cockroaches are another matter
Thanks for all your replies. I will have a look at that link, Shysal, thank you. CBT?? I don't think that would do me any good to be honest. I KNOW they are ok, and not going to hurt me nless I am allergic. I KNOW they get the flies, everything in my brain says " It's not a problem" but my adrenelin say RUNNNNN!!
It is odd because no other creature scares me. I love moths and butterflies, and even daddy long legs I gently pick up with bare hands and take them outside
I once even saw a moth that had landed on a damp bowl. I rescued it, put it on a tissue and gently breathed on it until it was dried out and well enough to fly off again.
I can honestly say spiders don't bother me much. Glass on top, Sunday supplement underneath and a quick trip to the back door. Jenny long legs are caught in cupped hands and taken outside.
However DD is terrified of spiders and I remember her being at home alone during the day and studying in her bedroom when she spotted an enormous spider on her (newly decorated) bedroom wall. She put her hand inside one of her Caterpillar boots and squashed it leaving on the wall a totally flattened spider and the full imprint of a dirty boot.
I too bought an electronic spider repeller (different to the one shysal bought). When I was still finding spiders I contacted the company who told me it drives them out of the walls so I may find more in the house . I have kept them plugged in and now no longer see any spiders but every morning it seems they have had a party in my house overnight because I find webs everywhere!
