What makes you feel old?

I've always been quite active and try and be very positive about my life (and my age!) But I'm beginning to show signs of 'getting older' and it's scaring me. I have a knee op scheduled for a month's time and it's the first major operation since giving birth and I'm very, very nervous. My last eye test showed my eyesight has worsened quite a bit since last time and I'm feeling very disconnected from my almost teen grandchildren who I've till now had a very good relationship with. I read the papers and watch telly and everyone looks so...young. How do I get my joie de vivre back!? I refuse to be 'past it' just yet even if the evidence is telling me otherwise!

Mobility - the lack of it - is the big problem. I'm 63 but move round very, very slowly and painfully due to arthritis (mainly in the knees but also the toes and the back!) and it makes me feel ancient. I daren't sit on a low seat and can't stand unless I "push up" on something. Haven't been able to kneel down or sit on the floor for years.

The grey hair, dodgy heart and hairy chin don't bother me too much. Nor do remarks by my youngest grandchildren along the lines of, "Nana's very old and will die soon, won't she?" The older grandkids used to make similar remarks years ago, when I wasn't even 50...

If I can lose some weight and hopefully then have surgery on my knees, I think it will give me a new lease of life.

As for other things...Well, people like Bowie dying makes me realise that a lot of time has passed since the days of our youth. Modern technology also helps to reinforce the feeling of being a bit of an old fool.

Getting the renewal notice for my driving licence. I'm healthy fit and still in my 20's at heart.

Couple of years back I was walking into town when the pavements were a little slippery - a youngish man say 'go careful luv'.

That did it I knew I was old - early 60's

petra Thu 18-Aug-16 17:31:45

That should have said smart WATCH.

petra Thu 18-Aug-16 17:30:42

My 10yr old GS calling me from his smart phone.

I had to visit a man yesterday as part of my job. I found out today that he had described me (couldn't remember my name) as being blonde and in my 20's. I had a good laugh at this as he is 40 years out with my age and my hair is now heading towards being white!! He definitely needs to go to "Specsavers"!!

One good thing about being old, I love when polite people, ask if they can help me with my luggage on and off trains,I eagerly accept. I am in good health and thankful to be old, many people havent made it here.
Accept what comes with age, the good and the bad!

gulligranny Thu 18-Aug-16 17:15:05

Eeeek! Finding out that Robert Redford is 80 today! 80!!!!!

No longer being able to have a soak in the bath in case I can't get out again... I wouldn't mind if I had the sort of body that would appeal to a dishy fireman, but sadly I don't anymore!grin

Three years ago, the optometrist made me feel young by telling me that I was unique in my age group in having not a sign of cataracts. A year later he made me feel old again by informing me that I had, in the interim, acquired a cataract. Sod's law!

narrowboatnan Thu 18-Aug-16 15:56:16

Going to the opticians and being told that I have a cataract coming! Eek!
Not being able to get out of a bath tub without doing a beached whale impersonation.
No longer enjoying spending the day shopping. Half an hour and I've had enough confused

When my GD said "how did you do that in the olden days grandma? "

Maimeo Thu 18-Aug-16 15:12:27

Lisalou, that made me laugh so much! Thanks?. AND it made me forget my aching back that tells me I'm not as able for stacking logs as I used to be

Like Pollyperkins ....when I go to town, I keep seeing this old woman following me whenever I look at a reflection in shop windows ....she seems to be in every dressing room I go in, and even seems to try the same clothes on !! I wish she would go away ...when I turn on my new fangled phone and accidentally take a 'selfie' ,,,,have no idea who this wrinkled, white haired old lady is ? .....I am almost at the stage of covering every mirror in the house ....

Realising that I don't have the enthusiasm for doing things and going places that I used to have, despite being fairly fit for my age (68). Also comparing how I worry about everything now. In the middle of a house move, and I'm terrified, wish we'd stayed put. It might not have been the most sensible option, but definitely easier.

Several things make me feel old ,involuntary groaning when I try to get out of a chair , falling asleep after the GC have been , not being able to decorate all day (or even for a couple of hours) like I used to , preferring to stay in and watch a good programme to going out to the pub . I look better than I feel because I always wear make up and do my hair but inside I feel ancient some times .

lizzypopbottle Thu 18-Aug-16 13:43:52

Photographs are a different matter! ? I try not to look...

lizzypopbottle Thu 18-Aug-16 13:42:08

I don't feel old at all (I'm 64) but I've pulled a muscle in my calf and I'm hobbling around very slowly. It doesn't make me feel old but probably makes me look old. Normally I run, even in the house, or walk quite fast. I've always found people who amble along intensely irritating, especially if I can't get past them. They are often much younger than I am. (Of course, I'm excluding anyone with a stick/crutches/carer/tight white perm etc. They're entitled to be slow whatever their chronological age!) If I were behind myself later today in the airport, I'd be fuming. I'm going to be slow. Sadly, it was running that did the damage. I already had some discomfort from overuse at a residential fitness week ? but it was resolving. I forgot to be careful, ran down the passageway to fetch something and bang! something popped ? That was on Sunday morning and I'm still not walking properly. No offence intended btw. Sorry to sound horribly complacent. I'm lucky to be (usually) fit and well.

Walking past a building site to total silence!!

patd Thu 18-Aug-16 13:06:51

feeling old when seeing my grandchildren reach 30+, my children 2 of which are now in their fifties and my oldest great granddaughter is 17.

pollyperkins Thu 18-Aug-16 13:02:39

Stansgran when are you going to China? We've just got our visas for China this Octobr. The up to date passport photos (no smiling) we had to produce made me look about 100!

gulligranny Thu 18-Aug-16 12:58:00

It's realising that people born in 1990 (just a few years ago!) are in reality now 26 ... and that my sweet baby grandson will be 10 in September and is now as tall as me.

If you are having a replacement knee then you need to be quite disciplined about your physio and exercises post op. Don't be like me and think everything will return to normal without any effort on your part because it won't. You need to be up and walking asap. Try the swimming pool to help with the exercise, don't go mad, just walk around the pool and exercise by straightening and bending your knee. It will help a lot and help you to feel more in control.

oldgoose Thu 18-Aug-16 11:38:32

It's a mixture of things for me, every new thing takes me totally by surprise and I realise I am getting old.
Photos of me when I was younger - my face now looks donkey-like !
Looking in the mirror and seeing that my hair needs colouring AGAIN
Knowing all the words to 60's songs and enjoying them greatly
Hating the music nowadays and thinking kids are missing out on 'Good tunes'
My bingo wings - I can HEAR them slapping when I move my arms
The pain in my legs when I've walked a lot the day before
Not enjoying clothes shopping like I used to
Having to find a nice seat when at the themepark with the GK's
Having to cling on to a rail when walking up or down stairs
Not being able to 'twerk'
Finding talk of new phones and their advantages a bit like listening to a foreign language
Having a huge problem getting out of the back of cars with 2 doors
Enjoying a cup of tea instead of a glass of wine
Having to shuffle forwards in order to get off a chair or sofa
Enjoying an afternoon nap
I could go on, and on and on and on

The fact that, in the last couple of years I have become so risk averse - I am very wary about getting into some rivers to fish now in case I can't get out again. And not being able to get up again if I lose my footing in the water. The year before last I wouldn't have turned a hair. Time to hang up my waders I think sad. I worry a lot about every activity that might result in a fall or broken bones, so my outdoor activities are becoming more benign. While we were on holiday last week, my d-i-l said how fit she thought I was at 70, as we were stumbling up and down the coast path together, but it certainly took its toll on me afterwards. One of the nurses at the hospital yesterday said she didn't think I looked 70. I was almost tempted to remark "should have gone to Specsavers"! smile
