In the supermarket this morning when I overheard a little girl very patiently and calmly explaining to her (I presume) mother why she shouldn't buy the vegetables she was looking at. Her reasons included they looked funny, they had been in the dirt (!) she didn't like the look of them wouldn't eat them and it would be better for mum to spend the money on something she would eat - like the sausage roll being sold at the hot food counter! She was putting her case in such a logical manner I think she will grow up to either be a scientist or a politician!

Well, that seems to have killed it!blush

As someone who as been a member since the world was black and white, well, ok since literally day 1 of GN, I am going to stick my head above the parapet, and even leave my tin helmet off and have a big, shouty capitals rant.

I am absobloodylutely sick to the back teeth of humourless, moralistic, out of context, holier than thou, my children always/never did, my opinion is more valid than yours, I have previous experience in this field so therefore I know best, you are wrong, I am right, you have disagreed with me therefore you are rude, your op isn't clear/doesn't make sense/is silly/stupid, posts

What on earth is happening to GN?

I guess some people will always be outsiders because they look for the bad rather than the good in people. sad

grumppa Sat 13-Aug-16 23:22:53

Perhaps some people are nasty; perhaps there are some threadhoggers, but overall I would say Gransnetters are a fairly civilized bunch. It takes all sorts, including the judgmental ones who make sweeping statements about us.

Casawan Sat 13-Aug-16 23:04:59

When I first looked at GN, I was struck by how nasty some people were. I went away and came back recently to see if things have improved. It seems not, judging by the downright nasty comments on this thread, and others. There are clearly some lovely people who use this site but sadly, they are overshadowed by the thread-hoggers - you know who you are - who feel driven to post, and pass judgement on everything. As an outsider it also seems to me that there is a strong clique of people here who are not at all welcoming to others.
Shame, it seemed to be such a good idea.

although I must say that DGS is a master at trying that kind of thing on, has been since he was very small and his arguments are always logically presented hmm
very persuasive but mother knows best!

Jalima Sat 13-Aug-16 20:41:56

I never realised that obieone was spelt wrong - or even a play on names blush

Jalima Sat 13-Aug-16 20:34:49

Doesn't ring true. Sounds like one of those things that circulate on the Internet. I didn't hear my story on the internet, I heard it in a National Trust property cafe the other day. Perhaps it is something doing the rounds of primary school children and they are all trying it on!

DaphneBroon Sat 13-Aug-16 20:03:34

Having fun organising a "let's all pick on DB" *jingl, cherrytree?
Ohh what larks, just like the playground again and just as redolent of playground bullying.
2 to 1, too, ah well

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 13-Aug-16 19:52:36

Stansgran was thinking of Obi-Wan Kenobi of Star Wars fame.

Obieone. Obi-Wan. See?

Ana Sat 13-Aug-16 19:52:31

Star Wars, Stansgran smile

DaphneBroon Sat 13-Aug-16 19:52:17

I can think of some people I would less like to be in a room with and would HUGELY appreciate not being discussed in this way. angry

Cherrytree59 Sat 13-Aug-16 19:49:43

jings you don't arf make me larf grin

Will you be giving odds on Oor DB and llrina

Obie I enjoy your posts. smile

Stansgran Sat 13-Aug-16 19:47:17

DaphneBroon Sat 13-Aug-16 19:42:48

Why?
No offence to Ilrina but what IS your particular problem this time ?

obieone Sat 13-Aug-16 18:34:07

Thanks jingl!

Stansgran and jingl. Yes, I realised I spelt it wrong about two months after! Oh well again! grin

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 13-Aug-16 16:55:31

obie..... a word in your ear. grin

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 13-Aug-16 16:45:46

Like wot they do in the film. smile

Stansgran Sat 13-Aug-16 16:44:06

Yes but how do you pronounce obieone?

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 13-Aug-16 16:33:15

obieone stop being so bloody 'umble! You are every bit as good as anyone on here, and much nicer than some.

jinglbellsfrocks Sat 13-Aug-16 16:31:39

I think it would be interesting to put Daphnebroon and Illrina in a room together, and see what transpires.

Penstemmon Sat 13-Aug-16 16:04:54

It would have made me smile! My DGC are always trying to persuade me of the benefits of all kinds of things they would like. I like their tenacity and perseverance as they very rarely win an argument if it is too costly/too unhealthy (though a sausage roll is OK as part of a balanced diet!) not required!!

At the moment DD1 is trying to persuade the whole family that it would be good for us all to contribute money towards the cost of a mobile phone for her 11th birthday! Her arguments are well thought out, well presented and constructed. Well done her tachers for teaching her persuasive writing and discussion! She'll be lucky! grin

Pollengran Sat 13-Aug-16 15:25:51

I think you already told me off last night and I agreed that I was being silly, so I apologise to sunseeker if she is offended sad.

What was the phone sex thread about anyway grin?

Ilrina Sat 13-Aug-16 15:05:53

Pollengran.I wasn't actually bringing up the phone sex operator thread for further discussion. It was just an example.
As far as I can see GN is meant to be a place where people can throw things up for discussion, or share a moment with others which they had found interesting or amusing.
By definition I wouldn't expect everyone to agree with everyone else, that would be very boring. One thing I do not like to see though is another person's post being classed as either silly or a non thread merely because someone doesn't agree with it.

To say such a thing seems very narrow minded and verging on being a bit of a bully, usually those two things go together.
I rest my case: Discuss wink

obieone Sat 13-Aug-16 14:25:36

Is it? Oh well. Sorry, I dont even know on this occasion.
I dont mind if you teach me. I am perhaps worse than I realise.
